While health checkups are underway for school meal workers across the country, 580 people and 20% of meal service workers in Gyeongnam have been diagnosed with lung abnormalities, including lung cancer. ‘Cooking fume’, a harmful substance that comes out when cooking fried foods, is the biggest cause, and the first discussion was held to create a safe food service environment. Reporter Choi Jin-seok reports.

[report]

A school cafeteria that makes hundreds of meals a day.

Due to various harmful substances from the cooking process, workers are exposed to the risk of lung disease.

[Lung Cancer Industrial Accident Recognized Food Service Worker/Voice Modified : “When I first went there, the place where I cooked rice was blocked and the ventilation wasn’t good. I keep frying for about 3 to 4 hours.”]

There are about 580 school meal workers in Gyeongnam who are suspected of having abnormal lung diseases, including lung cancer, or 20% of the interim survey subjects.

In the first discussion held by the Gyeongnam Office of Education to create a safer meal service environment, experts cite ‘cooking fume’, a harmful substance that comes out when cooking fried foods, as the biggest cause of lung disease.

[Soundbite] Park Jung-rae(Chief of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Changwon Hospital) : “These two things, oil and high-heat cooking, must be controlled to reduce the generation of ‘cooking fumes.’ Fundamentally.”

It was pointed out that the ventilation structure should be changed.

[Soundbite] Lee Jun-ho(Occupational Safety and Health Agency, Gyeongsangnam-do Headquarters) : “The process that generates cooking fume should be installed on the wall of the workplace (install an air exhaust device). Do not do it near a window.”]

However, it is evaluated that most of the discussion was theory-oriented, and it was not enough to resolve the anxiety and curiosity of food service workers.

It is pointed out that discussions on improving working conditions, such as the introduction of replacement personnel, were also omitted from the discussion.

[Soundbite] Lee Myeong-suk(National Non-regular Workers’ Union, Gyeongnam Branch, Secretary General) : “It is a condition that you cannot use paid sick leave or sick leave even if you know that cooking fumes affect lung cancer.”]

The Gyeongnam Office of Education plans to come up with long-term measures along with improving the cafeteria environment, which is currently being promoted.

DTI, DOTr push Container Ledger Account use to carriers – PortCalls Asia

Government is pushing members of the Association of International Shipping Lines to subscribe to Container Ledger Account to address the lingering issue on container deposits
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual called on shipping lines to consider CLA
They said CLA “appears to be an effective solution that simplifies the container deposits management process” for shipping lines, consignees and brokers
Separately, DTI Assistant Secretary Mary Jean Pacheco again “strongly urged” AISL members to subscribe to CLA
16 shipping lines/non-vessel operating common carriers have subscribed to CLA as of February 2023

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are urging members of the Association of International Shipping Lines (AISL) to subscribe to the Container Ledger Account (CLA) to address the longstanding issue on container deposits.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and Trade and Industry Secretary Alfredo Pascual, in separate letters to AISL members dated January 13 but received on February 8, called on shipping lines to consider CLA as it “appears to be an effective solution to simplify the container deposits management process between CLA subscribers (shipping lines, consignees, and brokers).”

The secretaries also urged the shipping lines to support the government’s goal of reducing logistics costs in the country.

In a separate letter to AISL dated February 7, DTI Assistant Secretary Mary Jean Pacheco again “strongly urged” AISL members to subscribe to CLA.

Previously, former Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez endorsed CLA in June 2022, saying DTI “believes that the CLA is a viable option in addressing the issue of container deposits.”

DOTr and DTI said in their January letter that for several years now, the issue on the delays in the refund of container deposits by international shipping lines had been raised with their departments.

“Most international shipping lines that require container deposits to cover for loss, damage, demurrage, or detention charges are unable to return the deposits timely due to long and tedious administrative processes. As a result, many shippers have complained about refunds that reach an estimated average of three (3) months or longer, and unreturned deposits in millions of pesos,” the letter said.

Pacheco, in her letter, noted that the government recognizes the purpose of requiring a container deposit but said “the turnover of the release of container deposits to consignees and customs brokers is an issue of its own, as it prevents the competitiveness of these industries and their clients.”

Pacheco said that in a recent discussion between DTI and DOTr, both agencies agreed to jointly endorse CLA given that it “appears to be an effective solution in simplifying the container deposit management and return between CLA subscribers.”

She added that CLA has also gained support and endorsement from industry groups such as AISL, the Association of Off-Dock CFS Operators of the Philippines, Philippine Liner Shipping Association, Philippine Multimodal Transport and Logistics Association Inc.; Port Users Confederation of the Philippines, and Supply Chain Management Associations of the Philippines.

“We maintain the belief that CLA is a viable option in addressing the issue of container deposits. There have been positive benefits to stakeholders as it has proven to reduce procedures, time, and cost as well as improve the competitiveness of SMEs (small and medium enterprises),” Pacheco said.

AISL general manager Maximino Cruz told PortCalls in a text message that the group will follow up with member lines the action taken by their higher management in response to the “letter endorsement.” The letters to individual shipping line members were forwarded on February 9.

According to Pacheco, only 16 shipping lines/non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCC) are subscribed to CLA as of February 2023. AISL has more than 30 members.

CLA is an alternative and voluntary solution to simplify container deposit management between a shipping line and a consignee/agent. The system began pilot-testing in the Philippines in December 2021.

AISL tapped Malaysia-based D&D Control (M) Sdn Bhd to offer the service.

D&D has set up Container Ledger Account Phils. Inc. (CLAP) and now has a physical office in Manila.

Aside from shipping lines, there are 177 consignees/freight forwarders, and 204 customs brokers/ container freight station and warehouse operators that are subscribed to the system as of February 2023.

CLA earlier told PortCalls it has further reduced its refund time to an average of 0.8 day in November 2022 from 1.4 days in October 2022.

CLA can either help manage container deposit online or replace the deposit with a one-time security payment.

The system aims to reduce procedures, time, and costs; improve competitiveness, and level the playing field among big, small and medium organizations. It also aims to eliminate the administrative burden of shippers who have to prepare various documents to claim their container deposits from various shipping lines.

Through CLA, users can provide the container deposit or a security amount for use with all their containers regardless of the shipping line. – Roumina Pablo

Honda Civic Type R Generations DRAG RACE

Civic Type R fans, this one’s for you!

We’ve got our hands on every generation of Civic Type R, and they’re about to face off over the quarter mile to see just how much the Type R has evolved since 2001!

Now of course, it should come as no surprise that the older editions come at a disadvantage when it comes to power output. If you take a look at the original EP3, it comes with a 2-litre naturally-aspirated engine (with VTEC!) that can produce 200hp and 196Nm of torque. In comparison, the all-new FL5 comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol engine that can produce 320hp and 420Nm!

But of course, don’t forget that they’re all on a level playing field in that they’re all FWD, and they’re all manuals! The question is, will the new FL5 prove to be worth its eye-watering £47,000 price tag?

There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Fruit and vegetable shortages could be ‘tip of the iceberg’, NFU warns | The Independent

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) has warned that shortages of some fruit and vegetables in UK supermarkets could be “the tip of the iceberg”.

NFU deputy president Tom Bradshaw said a reliance on imports has left the UK vulnerable to “shock weather events”.

Soaring energy bills exacerbated by the war in Ukraine have also put off some UK vegetable growers, he added.

He said the UK has now “hit a tipping point” and needs to “take command of the food we produce” amid “volatility around the world” caused by the war in Europe and climate change.

It comes as the shortage of tomatoes in UK supermarkets has widened to other fruit and vegetables due to a combination of bad weather and transport problems in Africa and Europe.

Mr Bradshaw told Times Radio on Saturday: “We’ve been warning about this moment for the past year.

“The tragic events in Ukraine have driven inflation, particularly energy inflation to levels that we haven’t seen before.

“There’s a lack of confidence from the growers that they’re going to get the returns that justify planting their glasshouses, and at the moment we’ve got a lot of glasshouses that would be growing the tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergine that are sitting there empty because they simply couldn’t take the risk to plant them with the crops, not thinking they’d get the returns from the marketplace.

At the moment we’ve got a lot of glasshouses that would be growing the tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergine that are sitting there empty because they simply couldn’t take the risk to plant them with the crops, not thinking they’d get the returns from the marketplace

Tom Bradshaw, NFU

“And with them being completely reliant on imports – we’d always have some imports – but we’ve been completely reliant on imports (now). And when there’s been some shock weather events in Morocco and Spain, it’s meant that we’ve had these shortages.

“It’s really interesting that before Brexit we didn’t used to source anything, or very little, from Morocco but we’ve been forced to go further afield and now these climatic shocks becoming more prevalent have had a real impact on the food available on our shelves today.”

On Wednesday, Tesco followed Aldi, Asda and Morrisons in introducing customer limits on certain fresh produce as shortages left supermarket shelves bare.

Tesco and Aldi are limiting customers to three units of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers as a precautionary measure, while Asda is also limiting customers on lettuce, salad bags, broccoli, cauliflower and raspberries, and Morrisons has set a limit of two items per customer across tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers.

Retailers believe the problems stem from poor yields on the continent and north Africa, and that supplies will improve in the coming days or weeks.

Environment Secretary Therese Coffey said on Thursday that British consumers should eat more turnips instead of imported food.

Growers have also warned that a leek shortage will see British-grown supplies exhausted by April, with high temperatures and a lack of rain, followed by a period of cold weather, blamed for creating the “most difficult season ever”.

Jack Ward, chief executive of the British Growers Association (BGA), has reportedly said supermarkets could also experience shortages of carrots, cabbage and cauliflower within weeks.

The BGA has also warned that the future of British apple and pear-growing is “on a knife edge”.

A BGA survey of British Apples & Pears Limited (BAPL) members, which represent an estimated 80% of the industry in the UK, found 150,000 orders for new apple and pear trees – a third of the planned 480,000 – have been cancelled this season.

BAPL executive chair Ali Capper said: “The key reason for the lack of investment is supermarket returns that are unsustainable.”
