What we’ve learned about the Cardinals after 9 spring training games – The Athletic

JUPITER, Fla. — The Cardinals have wrapped up a week-and-a-half of spring training games and while that’s hardly a suitable sample size when considering a 162-game season, some general ideas about the team are starting to form.

After making their first round of cuts Saturday, the Cardinals’ major-league camp roster stands at 58 players. Right-handers Freddy Pacheco and Guillermo Zuñiga were optioned to Memphis, and James Naile, Tommy Parsons, Kodi Whitley and catchers Aaron Antonini and Jimmy Crooks were reassigned to minor-league camp. However, a significant portion of the roster is no longer in Jupiter, as all players cleared to participate in the World Baseball Classic have departed the Cardinals’ spring complex and reported to their respective teams.

It will be roughly three weeks before Oli Marmol has his full squad under one roof again, which will complicate matters a bit as he looks to start building his 2023 roster. The first handful of games this spring has already presented the second-year manager with much to consider. Let’s dive into what we’ve learned about the Cardinals.

Rotation taking shape

All five projected starting pitchers — Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Jack Flaherty, Jordan Montgomery and Steven Matz — have made at least one Grapefruit League start. The early returns are promising. Mikolas was sharp in both of his outings, racking up six strikeouts over five innings. Flaherty and Matz dazzled in their debuts Monday against Houston: Flaherty struck out five batters over three innings and Matz retired all nine batters he faced, four via the strikeout. Montgomery’s line score wasn’t ideal — four earned runs in his debut Sunday — but admitted feeling a little nervous coming into the start and slightly rushed as he adjusted to the pitch timer. The good news for Montgomery is that his fastball velocity ticked up to 95 mph in that outing, which represented the earliest he’d reached that velocity in spring.

— MLB (@MLB) March 6, 2023

Both Flaherty and Matz entered camp eager to put their injury history behind them. The Cardinals’ rotation lacked a high amount of swing-and-miss last year, but Flaherty and Matz are two of the arms best profiled to change that.

“That’s what we bet on, right?” Marmol said when discussing the importance of a healthy Matz and Flaherty. “When we sat down in the offseason and talk about what we need and then not adding an arm is because we were really counting on those two to look like (Monday’s outing). If they do that, we’re in pretty good shape.”

The organization does have some concerns over Wainwright, who hasn’t thrown a pitch above 87 mph this spring. However, the concern wasn’t dire enough for Wainwright to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic. He and Mikolas departed Monday morning to join Team USA, and both pitchers will be used as starters under manager Mark DeRosa. The thing to monitor for Wainwright in the WBC is how his velocity ramps up during competition as he works through what he previously described as a “flaw” in his delivery.

“It’s a muscular thing,” Wainwright said to reporters after his second start. “My left glute and my left leg are not firing through. Even when I sprint right now, I’m not really getting my leg up like I want to.”

The Cardinals will be looking to see if Wainwright’s velocity ticks up over his next start, which could take place as early as March 11. They don’t need to see him hit 90 mph, but the training staff is eager to see incremental improvements. Between his first and second start, Wainwright was able to improve his average fastball velocity from 84 mph to 86 mph. He’ll look to continue that trend over the next couple of weeks.

With Wainwright and Mikolas departing, players like Jake Woodford, Dakota Hudson and prospect Gordon Graceffo will have an expanded opportunity to make their case for any potential sixth-starter role. Woodford’s fastball velocity is up from last year and he’s implemented a new grip on his changeup. Still, the pitch he has the most to prove with is his slider, and the Cardinals have been encouraged by its early showing.

The kids are all right!

Director of scouting Randy Flores might have outdone himself with his 2020 draft class, despite it being only five rounds long. By now you’ve surely heard about 20-year-old phenom Jordan Walker, who is quickly becoming the Cardinals’ hottest storyline of the spring. In 21 at-bats, Walker is hitting .429 with three home runs and 1.429 OPS. That includes a 4-for-4 performance on Saturday against the Nationals when he homered twice. There are still roughly three weeks of spring remaining, but if the first few games are any indication, Walker could force the organization’s hand when it comes to landing on the Opening Day roster.

— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) March 4, 2023

“He’s continuing to show he’s capable,” Marmol said over the weekend. “We went into camp saying that there’s going to be real competition, and that’s exactly what he’s making it. A real competition.”

“When you watch that bat, you get excited (about) what that can look like in a lineup,” Marmol added. “We’re a handful of games in, and there’s still a lot of camp left. I want to continue to see what this looks like, day in and day out. … (Is he) showing that he can hold his own at the big-league level at the moment? Yeah, he’s showing that he’s capable.”

But Walker isn’t the only 20-year-old that has the club talking. Masyn Winn, who ranks No. 46 on The Athletic’s Keith Law’s top-100 prospect rankings, has impressed the organization with how advanced he is. Winn, a former two-way prospect, has already wowed with his elite throwing arm. He’s also cranked a 435-foot homer, despite trying to focus on staying short and square to the ball.

“They’re young and they’re good,” Marmol said of Walker and Winn. “There’s a reason people have been talking about them as much as they have, and they’re showing exactly why. Are there some nerves early on? Yes, but do they scare? Not even close. Both of them know that they have some talent; they’ve gone about it well. But when it comes to competing, neither one of those personalities are backing down, which is a really good trait to have.”

Though he’s still a ways off from the major leagues, pitching prospect Tink Hence has also been notable in his first big-league camp. Ranked No. 63 by Keith Law, Hence hasn’t thrown much in terms of innings since being drafted, but he has a lively fastball that pairs with a nasty slider and the organization believes he will become even better.

Position battles are well underway

The day before the Cardinals officially opened camp, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak was asked which area of the roster would spark the most competition. He was quick to identify both the middle infield and the outfield.

Nolan Gorman, Paul DeJong, Brendan Donovan and non-roster invite Taylor Motter will all see time on the infield with presumed starting shortstop Tommy Edman playing overseas for Team Korea in the World Baseball Classic. DeJong has been limited to a designated-hitter role for the first week as he works through some arm fatigue, but he’s expected to play the field as early as Tuesday. Gorman has impressed early from both sides of the ball, especially with the advancements he’s made in laying off the high fastball. Donovan’s versatility makes him easy to place throughout the lineup —and the early power he’s displayed this spring has been especially encouraging. Motter has some pop in his swing as well, though he’s a less likely candidate for the Opening Day roster than the others.

Much of the outfield competition will be settled by Walker. He will either make the team as a starting corner outfielder or he will play every day in Triple A. The Cardinals are unlikely to bring Walker up to be used as a bench bat. That role is much more likely for a player of Juan Yepez’s or Alec Burleson’s caliber, though it’s difficult to see both of those players making the roster if Walker makes it as well.

Crushed by Carlson! pic.twitter.com/Sk6u6MW7yq

— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) March 6, 2023

“That’s going to be the key to his season, the ability to do that,” Marmol said. “I think we saw a very productive right-handed hitting Dylan last year, and the thing that kept him out of the lineup was his inconsistency from the left side. (He) needs to be able to produce as far as doubles and homers from that side. Doesn’t mean he has to be this power hitter, but being able to impact the ball he did today, that plays.”

With Nootbaar and O’Neill participating in the World Baseball Classic, both Carlson and Walker figure to be in the lineup nearly every day. So will Moisés Gómez, who profiles in the same role as Yepez and Burleson. Since the first day of camp, Marmol has preached competition and rewarded players based on performance and mentality. These next couple of weeks should be pivotal as the Cardinals look to narrow down their outfield choices.

Having all emerged winners in their national final challenges, the group is now heading to what is a much-anticipated and first-of-its-kind global final event taking place from 24 to 30 March.

This year, a step-change in the program has seen the PATRÓN Perfectionists evolving into a fully integrated bartending program, with the historical entry cocktail presentation undertaken by bartenders as part of the national final being replaced by three new challenges for the global final.

The new, creative challenges draw from some of the elements of the educational modules bartenders attended over the course of the entry stage and will be judged by an esteemed panel of world-renowned judges coming from different fields of the hospitality industry: Tara Fougner, award-winning journalist, co-founder and CEO of Thirsty Media; Ivy Mix, co-owner of New York’s Leyenda bar & Fiasco! wine & spirits shop, co-founder of Speed Rack; LP O’Brien, winner of Netflix’s Drink Masters, CEO and founder LP Drinks and Focus on Health; Sandrae Lawrence, founder and editor of award-winning media outlet The Cocktail Lovers magazine and podcast; Giulia Cuccurullo, 2020 PATRÓN Perfectionists Global Winner and Head Bartender of London’s Artesian; Harrison Kenney, 2022 PATRÓN Perfectionists Global Winner and GM of Sydney’s Bar Planet; Ana Martorell, educator, chef and founder of Mexico City restaurants Aida and OXA Cocina única.

Covering different aspects of bartending – from creativity, to technicality, knowledge of ingredients, storytelling, and sense of hospitality, just to name a few – the challenges will culminate into the grand finale, Mi Mesa Es Tu Mesa, tasking bartenders with transforming the judges’ time at the table into a truly unforgettable experience.

While the global finalists are preparing for an intense week of experiences and some truly unforgettable moments, let’s meet them all and wish them good luck!

Ninth Circuit Wants Washington Supreme Court to Rule on ‘Wrongful Life’ Claim After Family Is Awarded $10 Million for Raising Disabled Child

Luis Lemus and Yesenia Pacheco shown as Pacheco holds her daughter.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit asked the Washington Supreme Court in an order on Monday to clarify whether state law permits a family to pursue a “wrongful life” claim for the costs of raising a child with birth defects after a nurse negligently gave a flu shot to a woman instead of the contraceptive shot that she thought she was getting.

Yesenia Pacheco, Louis Lemus, and their child known as “S.L.P.” in court documents are plaintiffs in a lawsuit against NeighborCare Health Center, a federally qualified community health center. Pacheco first visited the health center in 2009 to obtain birth control, and was given regularly-scheduled contraceptive injections over the next two years. When Pacheco went for a routine contraceptive injection in September 2011, Gloria Rodriguez, a NeighborCare employee, gave Pacheco a flu shot instead of the contraceptive shot. Pacheco did not learn about the error until her next appointment when she arrived for her December contraceptive injection. By that time, Pacheco, already a mother of two, had become unintentionally pregnant with a third child.

Pacheco gave birth to S.L.P in August 2012 after a difficult pregnancy and an emergency cesarean section. S.L.P. was born with epilepsy and bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria, a neurological disorder that limits her cognitive and motor functions.

Pacheco and her family sued, and won a $10 million negligence verdict against the United States — $7.5 million of which was meant to compensate S.L.P. for future damages. The federal government appealed, and now, the Ninth Circuit asks the state court to provide an answer to the central legal question in the case: If there is no evidence that a healthcare provider was or should have been concerned with matters of contraception, does that healthcare provider have a duty relating to the birth of children with birth defects? In other words, is Gloria Rodriguez legally accountable for the birth of S.L.P after mistakenly giving a flu shot instead of a contraceptive shot?

The question put to the court is not one of philosophy, but rather, one of legal interpretation. Washington state law allows for lawsuits for “wrongful birth,” which are claims brought by parents against healthcare providers when their “negligent action while treating a mother caused the birth of a defective child.” As noted by the Ninth Circuit, “Washington courts use the term ‘defective’ to describe children with congenital defects.

In Washington, healthcare providers can be found liable for failing to provide parents with information relating to conception or for negligently performing a procedure that would have prevented the birth of  a “defective child.” In successful wrongful birth actions, parents may not recover child-rearing costs as damages if they ultimately give birth to a healthy child. They may recover expenses, however, as well as damages for pain and suffering for pregnancy and childbirth.

In addition to the “wrongful birth” claim by Pacheco and Lemus, S.L.P. and other “defective” children may bring their own claims for “wrongful life,” in which they can recover expenses incurred in connection with medical treatment. The federal government argues, though, that the relationship between S.L.P.’s birth defects and Rodriguez’s mistake is too flimsy to support liability. The law, argues the United States, aims to compensate victims only for malfeasance that causes birth defects — and not that which simply causes an unwanted birth.

Chief Circuit Judge Mary H. Murguia, a Barack Obama appointee, certified this question to the Washington Supreme Court via order issued Monday:

Under claims for wrongful birth or wrongful life, does Washington law allow extraordinary damages for costs associated with raising a child with birth defects when defendant(s) negligently provided contraceptive care even though plaintiff(s) did not seek contraceptives to prevent conceiving a child later born with birth defects?

The federal appellate court noted it does not intend the “phrasing of our question to restrict the Washington Supreme Court’s consideration of the issue.”

“We recognize that the Washington Supreme Court may, in its discretion, reformulate the question,” the order continued. “When the Washington Supreme Court decides whether to accept the certified question, the parties will promptly file a joint status report informing this Court of the decision. If the Washington Supreme Court accepts the certified question, the parties will file another joint status report informing this Court when the Washington Supreme Court issues an answer to the certified question promptly upon the issuance of that determination.”

In an email to Law&Crime Tuesday, plaintiffs’ attorney Mike Maxwell called said he and his clients were “disappointed” with the Ninth Circuit’s order. Maxwell continued as follows:

This is a matter of critical importance to the child. She is intellectually disabled with an IQ in the low 70’s. She is illiterate, she has recurrent seizures, has poor vision, and her education will never advance beyond the first grade level. She is in need of vision and occupational therapy which her impoverished parents cannot afford to pay for. We were to resolve this case shortly after her sixth birthday so that the child could have access to the services she needs, the sooner, the better. The child is now 9 1/2 years old, and we are still discussing an issue which the Supreme Court fo Washington resolved in 1982 in the Harbeson case.

Maxwell also criticized the federal government’s handling of the case, explaining that trial had been delayed several times due to the government’s actions, forcing him to file a motion for an expedited trial. The appeal has also been delayed.

“The United States waited until the last day to file its appeal, and on January 6, 2021, it filed its appeal in this case,” Maxwell said. The underlying law, according to Maxwell, has been long settled. He said, however, that “The United States stitched together an argument by mixing up inapplicable doctrines which creates a foggy argument which sounds legalistic.”

Maxwell also has this to say of the court: “Rather than doing its duty to read Harbeson, the Ninth Circuit bought into the confusion argued by the United States, and certified this, which will cause more irreversible and permanent harm for this 9 year old, innocent, disabled child.”

Attorneys for the DOJ declined to comment in response to Law&Crime’s request.

Kayla Harrison admits PFL championship loss to Larissa Pacheco might be “best thing” to happen: “Working on the areas I need to work on” | BJPenn.com

PFL women’s lightweight contender Kayla Harrison is seemingly grateful for her loss to Larissa Pacheco.

The former Judoka has been out of action since her trilogy bout with the Brazilian last November. The two female lightweights headlined PFL’s championship card, but few expected the main event to be competitive. In their prior two outings, Harrison dominated Pacheco, and many figured that would be the case in the third matchup.

Instead, the underdog flipped the script on the undefeated former tournament winner. Harrison and Pacheco went back and forth for five rounds, with the latter picking up the win by unanimous decision. With that, the Brazilian had won the women’s lightweight tournament and handed the former champion the first loss of her career.

Months on from the trilogy, Kayla Harrison has reflected on the upset loss. In an interview with Sports Illustrated, the Judoka admitted that the defeat hurt. However, she’s now grateful for the loss.

Harrison explained that without the loss, she wouldn’t be able to improve. She also likened the experience to a spiritual awakening and admitted that it might be the best thing to happen for her.

“The loss was like a spiritual awakening,” Kayla Harrison stated. “For me, for the longest time, it was either I’d become the best of all time or die from the shame of failing. I would tell myself, if I didn’t win, I was worthless. I was fighting to earn love. That’s how I’ve felt since I was a child. If I wanted respect, then I needed to win. If I wanted love, then I had to win.” (h/t Sports Illustrated)

She continued, “…I’ve moved on. I’m healthy. The loss wasn’t because I didn’t train hard. I put in the work, the game plan was solid, but it just wasn’t my night. The lowest moment is what I needed for me to get where I need to go. You can’t rest on your past victories, but neither can you rest on your past defeats. Professionally, it’s still yet to be seen, but losing to Larissa may have been the best thing to happen to me personally.”

“I’m blessed financially. I have two beautiful children I adopted, and I’m taking this time to be as present as possible with them. I’m still in the gym every day getting better, working on the areas I need to work on—and I’ll remain patient and keep working.”

What do you make of these comments? Who do you want to see Kayla Harrison fight next? Sound off in the comment section below PENN Nation!
