Spider-Woman Just Revealed How Close Marvel’s Heroes Really Are

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Woman #19, available now from Marvel.

The heroes of the Marvel Universe have fought alongside one another for decades, and in all that time some truly remarkable relationships have been forged. While the likes of Captain America and Iron Man can safely call themselves compatriots or even friends, the world’s foremost heroes still haven’t managed to cultivate the same sort of closeness that Marvel’s street level heroes have. In fact, it is that sense of familiarity that has just put an end to the latest threat to Spider-Woman’s family in the most wholesome way imaginable.

Jessica Drew has finally come face-to-face with Queen Veranke, the Skrull imposter who tore her life to pieces during the events of Secret Invasion. Now Veranke has returned from the dead to continue terrorizing Spider-Woman, even going so far as to assume her identity once more and kidnap Jessica’s infant son Gerry. Once the titular hero has caught up with her enemy in the pages of Spider-Woman #19 by Karla Pacheco, Pere Perez, Frank D’Armata, and VC’s Travis Lanham, neither Veranke nor Gerry are anywhere in sight. At least, not until Captain Marvel flies down with Gerry in her arms, just before another Carol Danvers shows up to make things even more complicated. The sight of two Carols is too much for Jessica to keep up with, though thankfully there is one person who knows exactly which Captain Marvel is the real one, and all it takes is a little zap-zap to reveal the truth.

In spite of the fact that Jessica herself couldn’t tell the difference between the real Captain Marvel and her imposter, young Gerry Drew has no such problem. While there is something to be said about a child’s intuition, Gerry immediately recognizing Veranke as “Bad Cawol” speaks to just how close Marvel’s street level heroes truly are. Carol isn’t just Jessica’s friend, she is a part of the family, and she isn’t the only one. Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock, and a slew of other heroes who call New York City their home have come to know one another in a way that the likes of the Avengers never really have.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have frequently found themselves at odds with their own teammates, even outside of groundbreaking events such as Civil War. Tony Stark himself is currently facing the repercussions of taking on the role of a cosmic god, while T’Challa is dealing with the fallout of having his own secret army strewn across the globe. Even Shang-Chi, who has long been a stalwart champion of justice, can’t keep his fellow Avengers from questioning his every move since taking control of the Five Weapons Society once controlled by his villainous father. When it comes to the likes of Jessica Drew, however, there are few if any situations which would have them at each other’s throats, at least without some serious hesitation along the way.

The Avengers might be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but they are far from its most human. No matter what powers or abilities Marvel’s street level heroes may have, none of them have forgotten what it is like to be a person just trying to eek out a decent life in the wild world they inhabit. And, at the core of all of those relationships, is trust. Jessica Drew’s faith in her friends, and her family, is precisely what has gotten her through her worst moments, just as their faith in her has brought her back from the brink more than once. That kind of faith isn’t a superpower on its own, but it is clearly just as important.

What Is Celeriac? Get to Know and Love the Homely Root Vegetable

Celeriac, aka celery root, may not be the prettiest vegetable on the produce display—but don’t be put off by its brown, knobby exterior. The white flesh within is distinctive, sweet and very versatile. Read on to learn everything you need to know to enjoy the funny-looking root vegetable, including selection and storage tips, easy ways to prepare it, and how to include it in your favorite recipes.

What Is Celeriac?

Celeriac is a type of celery grown for its root rather than its stalks. It’s a popular vegetable in Europe and North Africa, where it’s a favorite in salads, soups, and stews. The slow-maturing veggies are planted in the spring then harvested in the fall and winter. Like leeks, celeriac is often left in the ground and harvested as needed. Once peeled, celeriac can be used raw like a carrot or cooked like a potato.

How to Pronounce It

“Celeriac” is pronounced suh-LEHR-ee-ack.

What Does Celeriac Taste Like?

Celeriac’s flavor is sweet and nutty with a distinctive celery flavor. Unlike many root vegetables, it has a relatively low starch content. Its pale, fine-grained flesh is firm and crunchy when raw, creamy and slightly fibrous when cooked. One of the reasons it’s such a popular soup and stew ingredient is because it simultaneously lends its taste to cooking liquids and absorbs the flavors of other ingredients.

How Do You Cook with Celeriac?

Boil it, steam it, roast it, mash it—anything you can do with a potato or sweet potato, you can also do with celery root. In fact, you can use celeriac to replace some or all of the potatoes called for in most recipes.

Celeriac is also an ideal option for oil-free roasting. The veggie’s high moisture content allows it to cook through and brown well without turning mushy (much like cauliflower). Give it a try by roasting peeled cubes of celeriac on a parchment or silicone mat-lined baking sheet for 30 to 35 minutes at 375˚F. Or make roasted veggie steaks which are seasoned with just a hint of sherry vinegar.

Celeriac’s low-starch nutritional profile means it can be blended into a smooth purée without turning stiff or gummy. Try blending it to make Creamy Celeriac Pasta Alfredo, in which peeled and steamed celeriac is blended with pine nuts, sautéed onion and garlic, nutritional yeast, and a little plant milk for a low-fat vegan Alfredo sauce.

Raw celeriac is wonderful when grated and used in salads. Grated celeriac can be used in place of or in addition to grated carrots and beets or shredded cabbage in most recipes. Give it a try in our Moroccan Carrot-Beet Salad or Veggie and Apple Slaw.

How to Roast a Whole Celeriac

Roasted celery root makes a stunning side dish, though takes a while to cook. First, scrub it well to remove any dirt, then wrap in foil and roast in a 400˚F oven for 1½ to 2 hours. Remove the foil, and roast it 20 to 30 minutes more, or until the skin is crisp and it feels soft, like a baked potato. Cut the roasted celeriac in wedges, or slice off the top and scoop out the soft flesh in the center and serve like mashed potatoes.

How to Peel and Prep Celeriac

You’ll need a sharp knife to deal with celeriac’s rough, rooty exterior. Here’s how to prep it:

1. Trim the stalk end of the celeriac to remove any stalks still attached to the root and reveal the white flesh inside. The stalks and leaves are edible and can be used to flavor dishes like fresh herbs. They are usually too bitter and stringy to use in place of celery stalks.

2. Cut the celeriac in half, lengthwise or widthwise depending on its size and shape. (It doesn’t matter which way you cut the root; you just need to have a flat side to stabilize the vegetable on your work surface.) Set one celeriac half cut-side-down on a cutting board, and slice off the skin and any roots in large strips using a chef’s knife or paring knife. Discard the skin (or use it in a vegetable broth), then cut or grate the flesh as desired.

Tip: Once celeriac has been peeled, it begins to brown, like an apple. The discoloration won’t affect the veggie’s flavor, but if you want your cut or grated celeriac to remain creamy white, dunk it into a solution of 2 tablespoons lemon juice or vinegar and 4 cups water. Cut celeriac can be stored for three days in this acidulated water.

Selection and Storage

Celery root is available year-round in the refrigerated section of most well-stocked supermarkets and at farmers markets during the cooler months.

Choose celeriac roots with smooth, unblemished skin. The root should feel rock hard and be at least 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Smaller specimens don’t have much flesh on them after the outer skin is trimmed away, while larger roots can be stringy and bitter.

Store in a paper bag or breathable container in the fridge crisper drawer for up to 3 weeks.

Florida sheriff’s officers both commit suicide, leave their six-week-old baby orphaned, family says

Bewildered relatives say a Florida sheriff’s deputy committed suicide “for completely unknown reasons” on New Year’s Eve, sparking a tragic chain of events in which his girlfriend committed suicide two days later, leaving their six-week-old baby orphaned.

Shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve, Lucie Sheriff’s Office Deputy Clayton Osteen, 24, attempted suicide but survived and was taken to a hospital, where his family made the decision to remove him from the ventilator.

Two days after Osteen’s fatal suicide attempt, his partner, co-worker and the mother of his one-month-old son, Victoria Pacheco, 23, committed suicide. A GoFundMe Page Founded to raise money for the couple’s son, Jayce, said: “Tragically, for completely unknown and totally unpleasant reasons, Clayton committed suicide on December 31, 2021.

“Nearly recovered from the shock of the loss, Victoria committed suicide two days later.” It continued: “Clayton and Victoria were joyful parents who were first excited about their growing family, in love with their baby Jayce and so in love with each other.”

Now family and friends who are reeling from the loss are shocked at the parents’ choice to end their lives. They say they were as happy as ever after they welcomed their new baby and the reason behind the drastic actions is unknown.

Kelly Ridle, the mother of a colleague of Osteen and Pacheco who founded the GoFundMe for baby Jayce, described Osteen’s suicide attempt as “unexpected” and “inexplicable”

“The grief is deep and painful,” Ridle wrote on Facebook. “Parents shouldn’t bury their children. Brothers and closest friends must be called upon for support. Babies should grow up surrounded by their parents’ love. But know my friends, despite this dire situation, I have seen more grace, love, compassion, answered prayers and even what feels like a few miracles this week than I could even imagine among those left behind. We are forever bound to each other and to Jayce.”

Osteen was a retired US Marine who previously served as a gunner with the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment.

He enlisted in May 2015 and was featured in a video about undergoing training in the jungles of Brunei in 2016.

Authorities haven’t said what might have prompted the couple’s successive suicides or how they died, but Sheriff Mascara noted in his statement that deputies often deal with “stress” and being “human”.

“While it is impossible for us to fully understand the private circumstances that led to this devastating loss, we pray that this tragedy becomes a catalyst for change, a catalyst to alleviate the stigma surrounding mental wellbeing and encourage conversation about the challenges normalize so that many of us are confronted regularly,” the sheriff added.

Friends share memories and photos of the tragic couple on social media.

“A real brother has lost his inner struggle,” Ray Tourville wrote of Osteen on Facebook. “I struggle to find the words to write that do him even remotely justice. I’m incredibly sorry you thought this was your only option.’
