Tigers Claim Freddy Pacheco, Place Tarik Skubal On 60-Day IL | Yardbarker

The Tigers announced that they have claimed right-hander Freddy Pacheco off waivers from the Cardinals. To make room for him on their roster, left-hander Tarik Skubal has been placed on the 60-day injured list.

Pacheco, 25 next month, is a relief pitcher who was added to the Cards’ roster in November of 2021 to protect him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft. He earned that spot based on a strong campaign that saw him rise through three levels, going from Class-A Advanced to Double-A and Triple-A. He posted a 3.67 ERA that year in 54 innings, striking out an incredible 44% of batters faced but walking a concerning 13.4%.  Last year, he split his time between Double-A and Triple-A, tossing 62 innings with a 3.05 ERA. His strikeout rate fell to 33.6% but he also got his walks down to 11.2%.

Those are fairly strong results but Pacheco’s near-term status is up in the air at the moment. A couple of weeks ago, the team informed reports that Pacheco had some tightness around his elbow, with Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat among those to relay the update. The club did some imaging but didn’t find anything concerning, deciding to simply shut him down for a few weeks and then try to ramp him back up again.

There had not been any previous indication that Pacheco had been placed on waivers but the Cardinals evidently tried to pass him through recently, though the Tigers have swooped in to grab him. The latter club has seen a lot of bullpen turnover in the past year, as they traded away Michael Fulmer at last year’s deadline and then Gregory Soto and Joe Jiménez this offseason. Pacheco still has a couple of option years, meaning they can shuttle him between the majors and minors as a depth arm, as long as he’s healthy.

They were able to give Pacheco a roster spot due to Skubal’s health status. He had flexor tendon surgery in August and is still working his way back to health. The timeline on his return still isn’t clear but this IL placement means he can’t return until late May at the earliest, since the 60-day clock doesn’t start until Opening Day.

For the Cards, they now have an open roster spot that they could potentially use to add a non-roster invitee to their club. There’s a lot of hype around prospect Jordan Walker making the Opening Day roster, though nothing official has been announced. There’s now just over two weeks to the March 30 season opener.

Arajet Requests DOT Authorization To Launch Flights To The US

The Dominican carrier Arajet has requested US Department of Transportation (DOT) authorization to begin operating scheduled commercial passenger services to three destinations, San Juan (SJU), Miami (MIA), and New York John F. Kennedy (JFK) or New York Stewart International Airport (SWF). If approved, this would be Arajet’s entrance to the largest market in the Americas; the airline already operates routes to 17 destinations in 11 countries across South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

SIMPLEFLYING VIDEO OF THE DAY

The last frontier

When Simple Flying met with Arajet’s CEO, Víctor Pacheco, last year in the Dominican Republic, he told us that the United States was their goal market. The gigantic diaspora of Dominican people living particularly on the East Coast made flying to destinations such as New York and Miami particularly appealing for the new carrier, which only just began commercial services in September last year.

Photo: Daniel Martínez Garbuno | Simple Flying.

This plan has been set into motion, with Arajet looking to launch passenger services to the United States by 2023’s fall employing its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft configured with 185 seats, according to the document filed with the DOT. The airline:

“Seeks an exemption authorizing scheduled foreign air transportation of persons, property, and mail from a point or points in the Dominican Republic (…) to the coterminal points San Juan, Puerto Rico, New York, New York, and Miami, Florida.”

Simple Flying reached Arajet for comment on this request to the DOT however, the airline declined to comment.

Addressing the diaspora

Arajet’s plan is to improve connectivity across the region, using its base in Santo Domingo Las Américas International Airport as a hub airport. This plan includes several destinations in the United States, “where there is significant leisure travel demand to the Dominican Republic, as well as a large Dominican diaspora,” the airline said.

Photo: Daniel Martínez Garbuno | Simple Flying.

In the midterm, Arajet’s visions for services to the United States can be described in two phases. The first phase will serve the largest markets with tourism demand and the Dominican diaspora, including New York, Miami, and San Juan metropolitan areas.

In the second phase, Arajet will launch new services to other cities that do not currently have direct flights to the Dominican Republic. The airline said that it is supporting efforts in the Dominican Republic to negotiate an Open Skies agreement with the United States to allow greater flexibility in service between the two countries.

Against who would Arajet compete on these routes?

The most likely scenario is that Arajet would serve JFK, Miami, and San Juan from Santo Domingo. Arajet is already expanding to other Dominican airports (it recently announced a route between Cibao Airport and Bogota El Dorado), but Santo Domingo remains its hub.

According to data from Cirium, there are currently 141 weekly flights from Santo Domingo to these three US cities, operated by six airlines (one Dominican, RED Air, and the rest from the US, Eastern, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, and Frontier).

Find the latest South American aviation news here.

The Santo Domingo-New York route has the largest number of flights, with 63 each week (nine daily) and 11,914 seats available (189.1 on average per departure). Santo Domingo-Miami has 50 weekly flights, and Santo Domingo-San Juan has 28 weekly flights.

JetBlue is the main competitor in this market, operating 42 weekly flights from JFK and 21 from San Juan. American Airlines offers 35 weekly flights in the Miami-Santo Domingo route, and Delta Air Lines operates 21 weekly flights from JFK.

5LBS OF PRESSURE EP (Painting Pictures)

As a street veteran, one of the first things we learned in da hood is that it only takes 5LBS OF PRESSURE to pull a trigger. 5LBS OF PRESSURE to fire a gun. 5LBS OF PRESSURE to take a life. This means that even a child can have the power to kill at will. 7 years of age was when I knew I had 5LBS OF PRESSURE. Thankfully my cousins were on the scene and I’m here today to rap my life story and change lives with my music.

Pot and Container Sizes for Growing Vegetable Crops

Container growing vegetables

Pots and containers for growing vegetables and herbs on patios, balconies, and rooftops must be large enough for the crop to mature. A container must hold the soil and moisture that deliver nutrients to growing plants allowing them to leaf, flower, and fruit. The pot must be large enough to accommodate the plant’s roots. And a pot should be large enough that the height and weight of the above-ground growth of the plant do not tip the container.

Some plants are small enough that you can grow more than one plant in a container; other plants grow so large that you would not want to grow more than a single plant in a container.

A soil depth of at least 8 inches/ 20 cm will hold sufficient soil, nutrients, and moisture to support a good yield from almost every vegetable and herb growing in a container. (Expect to water two or three times per week.) Smaller containers holding less soil may require more frequent watering and fertilizing.

Is defending Bakhmut the best strategy for Ukraine? | DW news

Ukraine’s future depends on a victory in Bakhmut and elsewhere along the front line, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address on Monday.

Bakhmut has become the main focus of Russia’s assault, where it has captured the eastern part of the city.

“It is very tough in the east — very painful. We have to destroy the enemy’s military power. And we will destroy it,” Zelenskyy said.

Russia says taking Bakhmut would allow it to capture the rest of the Donetsk region — a key war aim for the Kremlin.

But in recent weeks, trench warefare has claimed a huge toll for both sides in Bakhmut.

On Monday, Ukrainian soldiers said they were repelling intensified Russian attacks in the city.

Zelenskyy said the front line towns are where “the kind of future we are to have is being decided, where the future of all Ukrainians is being fought for.”
