Boxing may have found its next star in 22-year-old Diego Pacheco.
The super middleweight from Los Angeles is 6-foot-4 with amazing reach and power in both hands. His height, length and the ferocity of his knockouts have earned Pacheco comparisons to Tommy “Hitman” Hearns.
Pacheco (18-0, 15 KOs) was originally scheduled to be in the co-feature for his UK debut in Liverpool, England. But when the headliner, Callum Smith, backed out of his fight with an injury, Pacheco’s bout with Jack Cullen was moved to the main event, hoping the young fighter would deliver an exciting performance for the crowd.
And did he ever.
Pacheco absolutely demolished Cullen, walking through the British veteran in four rounds and ending the show with a brutal combination that sent Cullen to his knees and forced the referee to stop the fight, per BBC.

The finishing sequence began with Diego Pacheco landing a vicious shot to Jack Cullen’s ribcage that almost broke him in half. It sparked plenty of hyped reactions, with many fans saying he’s “gonna be a problem” and that he could be the next boxing superstar.

Pacheco turned pro in December 2018 after a prominent amateur career that saw him as the top-ranked amateur middleweight in both the United States and Mexico. He has finished his past seven fights by knockout or TKO.

It’s likely Pacheco will get back in the ring over the summer during International Fight week and again in September if he can get a prominent position on a Canelo Alvarez fight card like he did last year when Alvarez fought Gennadiy Golovkin.

At this rate expect Pacheco to be in a fight for a major world championship during 2024.
“I’m super happy with the performance, thankful for everyone who came out and supported,” Pacheco said post fight. “Hopefully some boos turned into cheers now, but if they didn’t…oh well man, I’m going be here for a long time, so they better get used to seeing me.”

The post ‘Gonna be a problem’: Diego Pacheco’s KO of Jack Cullen proves he’s a superstar in the making appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The Tigers announced that they have claimed right-hander Freddy Pacheco off waivers from the Cardinals. To make room for him on their roster, left-hander Tarik Skubal has been placed on the 60-day injured list.
Pacheco, 25 next month, is a relief pitcher who was added to the Cards’ roster in November of 2021 to protect him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft. He earned that spot based on a strong campaign that saw him rise through three levels, going from Class-A Advanced to Double-A and Triple-A. He posted a 3.67 ERA that year in 54 innings, striking out an incredible 44% of batters faced but walking a concerning 13.4%. Last year, he split his time between Double-A and Triple-A, tossing 62 innings with a 3.05 ERA. His strikeout rate fell to 33.6% but he also got his walks down to 11.2%.
Those are fairly strong results but Pacheco’s near-term status is up in the air at the moment. A couple of weeks ago, the team informed reports that Pacheco had some tightness around his elbow, with Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat among those to relay the update. The club did some imaging but didn’t find anything concerning, deciding to simply shut him down for a few weeks and then try to ramp him back up again.
There had not been any previous indication that Pacheco had been placed on waivers but the Cardinals evidently tried to pass him through recently, though the Tigers have swooped in to grab him. The latter club has seen a lot of bullpen turnover in the past year, as they traded away Michael Fulmer at last year’s deadline and then Gregory Soto and Joe Jiménez this offseason. Pacheco still has a couple of option years, meaning they can shuttle him between the majors and minors as a depth arm, as long as he’s healthy.
They were able to give Pacheco a roster spot due to Skubal’s health status. He had flexor tendon surgery in August and is still working his way back to health. The timeline on his return still isn’t clear but this IL placement means he can’t return until late May at the earliest, since the 60-day clock doesn’t start until Opening Day.
For the Cards, they now have an open roster spot that they could potentially use to add a non-roster invitee to their club. There’s a lot of hype around prospect Jordan Walker making the Opening Day roster, though nothing official has been announced. There’s now just over two weeks to the March 30 season opener.

A Russian fighter jet forced down a US military “Reaper” surveillance drone over the Black Sea Tuesday, the US military said. The US condemned the jet’s “reckless” collision with one of its drones over the Black Sea. The US said that a Russian fighter jet struck the propeller of the surveillance drone in “brazen violation of international law.”
Moscow said the American drone sharply maneuvered and crashed after an encounter with Russian jets near Crimea, but insisted that Russian fighter jets didn’t fire weapons or hit the drone. The Russian Defense Ministry said their fighters from air defense forces on duty were in the air to identify the “intruder” over the Black Sea.
