Investing in a new mega trend can be challenging; as well as entering a new market, there is a great deal to learn and understand – new terminology, new science, new risks and new opportunities.

Investing in Longevity 101 is a new online course designed to help investors, and all those interested in participating in this new economy, to navigate the sector – this includes entrepreneurs, executives, clinicians, policy makers, &c.

The course’s target audience, incudes, but is not limited to:

  • Pharma executives & biotechnology professionals
  • Medical doctors pursuing continuing medical education
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Medical students
  • Scientists

Longevity.Technology: Launching shortly, the course content for Investing in Longevity 101 addresses both longevity biotech and non-biotech, reflecting the current segmentation of the longevity market.

There are companies like supplement manufacturers, clinics and biomarker vendors that are raising capital and generating revenues today, and there are longevity biotechs that are progressing through clinical trial phases – a growing number of them ‘in human’. Plus, there are myriad companies not far behind, all looking for multiple millions in investment that can help them maintain their progress and accelerate to clinic or market.

Education is key, and really understanding the longevity space will help investors benefit from its incredible opportunities – and help longevity benefit from much-needed investment. We gathered the course founders – Evelyne Bischof, Phil Newman, Ricardo Gaminha Pacheco, Jiayi Song and Alex Zhavoronkov – round a virtual table to find out more.

Phil Newman, Longevity.Technology CEO and one of the course’s founders told us: “Whether your interest is ‘longevity now’ or ‘longevity next’ there is always going to be risk and reward for investors – this is why Investing in Longevity 101 is so necessary; the longevity economy is building traction, and we want to ensure that investors and those seeking investment have a good platform of knowledge from which to work.”

Insilico Medicine CEO Alex Zhavoronkov, PhD, who is also a course founder, said: “Investing is a risky business and the cost to put one drug on the market can hit $2 billion – the cost, time, and failure rate in longevity biotechnology is likely to be higher. So far, nothing in longevity biotechnology worked – there are no success stories. Hype cycles in longevity correlate with macro economic cycles, and investors need to understand where to deploy capital.”

Alex Zhavoronkov on longevity impact

I think that this course is going to be extremely valuable for not only investment professionals, but also high school students, university students and lay people alike. It introduces the most exciting and the most impactful industry – and one that is going to change the way we think about life in general. I think it’s the most impactful industry on the planet.

Evelyne Bischof on longevity on the front line

The course will leverage both the perspective of the physician and patient, including biomarkers and deep diagnostics, things which clinics and academic institutions, which are bringing longevity medicine into their platforms, are already trying to apply.

Looking at developments in the past decade within the field, there’s a lot of promise around longevity technologies – it’s an area of exponential expansion. We are seeing more papers, the creation of more startups and biotechnology companies. It’s gaining momentum, and is very promising for Pharma, as it starts to look more seriously into the field.

Ricardo Gaminha Pacheco on the Pharma view

The course will cover a range of different opportunities for Phama, ranging from corporate venture funds, co-development, co-commercialization agreements and M&A activity as a whole. There are different ways of partnering within the industry; the more innovation is out there, the more promising this might be for Pharma, moving forward. We intend that the course will give more visibility to all of this.

Pharma is definitely playing attention to developments within the field; we are at a stage where things are very different now in 2023 versus what they were 10 years ago. Pharma really has been tracking a lot of the scientific breakthroughs out there, both at an academic level and from a private effort perspective as well. Looking at the whole field and the potential for new partnerships within the field, biotechs are also bringing those sources of external innovation internally within those companies to further develop their own pipeline – this is key for the industry and the Pharma companies out there. There are synergies to be explored.

Supply Chain Management

An efficient supply chain ensures products reach the right customers at the right time and in the right condition. Robust supply chain management enables retailers to optimize inventory management, streamline product delivery and reduce the risk of stockouts or overstock situations.

Technology Adoption

PHOTOGRAPHER JOE CONZO JR. | JazzDeLaPena

In an article published on October 4, 2005, by The New York Times, reporter David González heralded Joe Conzo Jr as “The Man Who Took Hip-Hop’s Baby Pictures.” The long and perilous journey of his photographic images had finally captured the gaze of mainstream America.
Born and raised in the Bronx, Joe Conzo Jr. acquired a passion for photography as a young boy attending the Agnes Russell School on the campus of Columbia University. He continued his formal artistic education at the School of Visual Arts (NYC).
During his early development, “Joey” bore witness to the volatile state of South Bronx community activism and the vanguard world of New York’s Puerto Rican cultural music scene. On any given day, he could find himself at the heels of his grandmother, the late Dr. Evelina López Antonetty (a dynamic leader and passionate activist ), engaged in a defiant act of civil disobedience for the educational rights of minorities in the South Bronx. On another day, he’d find himself clinging to the shirt-tail of his father, Joe Conzo Sr. (longtime confidant and biographer for the legendary orchestra leader and musician the late Tito Puente), behind-the-scenes with the giants of Latin music like Machito, Charlie Palmieri, Johnny Pacheco, and Ray Barretto. These two vivid realities would profoundly affect how Joey viewed his environment through the lens of a camera.
Coming of age as a young man and budding photographer in the mid-70s proved to be a baptism by fire during an unprecedented chapter of New York City’s urban decay. Joey was part of a generation that had refused to be erased by corrupt politicians and a disparaging educational system. His talents had found their niche within the collective acts of defiance that boldly re-invented the very world that left them for dead. This sociocultural movement would eventually be recognized in American History books as Hip Hop.
His generation’s art, music, dance, and aesthetics gave rise to a consciousness that defied authority and inspired personal battles against silence and hopelessness. Joey, aka “Joey Kane,” passionately embraced his role as the official photographer in an unfolding drama at its earliest stage. However, every revolution has its casualties, and very few emerged unscathed.
After a tumultuous period of substance abuse and homelessness, Joe Conzo Jr. wanted positive change in his life. With his archive of photographic works lovingly preserved in boxes by his mother and by members of the legendary Cold Crush Brothers group, he pursued the change, one step at a time. His re-invention led him to the medical profession, where he eventually received certification as a Medical Nurse. Later, he joined the New York Fire Department as an Emergency Medical Technician. His role as an EMT delivered him to the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001.
Joe Conzo Jr.’s near-death experience during the worst terrorist acts on US soil strengthened his resolve to maintain control of his life. Among his life choices, he resumed his stalled relationship with a camera. He found his passion for life again from behind a lens. A few years later, he met American photographer and videographer Henry Chalfant, working on the documentary “From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale.” Chalfant asked Joey for permission to include some of his Cold Crush Brothers images in the film. The collaboration sparked a friendship between the two that continues today. The documentary received the 2006 ALMA Award for Best Television Documentary.
In 2005, Joey was approached by noted New York musicologist and curator Johan Kugelberg, who was engaged in some research of his own into the roots of hip-hop culture. The referral came via the legendary Grandmaster Caz after tending to some inquiries by Kugelberg regarding any existing photographic images from that era. The meeting between Conzo and Kugelberg resulted in the publication of a seminal book on hip-hop culture.
“Born In The Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop” (2007) has received worldwide acclaim and has since been translated into German. In 2008, the entire collection of images in the publication became part of a permanent archive housed at Cornell University. The Cornell Hip Hop Collection sits alongside the prestigious institution’s copy of The Gettysburg Address document.
The Cornell archive has thrived considerably, transforming Conzo and Kugelberg into key figures within its historic expansion. The Cornell Hip Hop Collection recently signed a deal with Conzo that would guarantee a permanent home for all his photographic images. The digitization of over 10,000 film images taken by him has already begun. The progress can be viewed at the Cornell University Library’s website.
Some of those pictures captured by a teenage boy with his camera, throughout the ’70s and early ’80s have traveled over land and sea, in one form or another, to various parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Genre experts and academia regard them as a critical lens into the roots of Hip Hop culture and an integral source for any serious discourse on the movement.
Like most modern photographers, Joey has transitioned from film to digital. His work from behind the lens continues to reflect the central tenets of Hip Hop culture. As he once said, “Just because of a camera…,” he has traveled the USA coast-to-coast and has crossed oceans to parts of the world he thought he would never see, and everywhere he went, the unfathomable spread of Hip Hop music, culture, and dance was irrefutable.
Joe Conzo Jr. continues to lecture, meet with young people, exhibit his work, and attend international events.

On final action, Casper City Council votes to allow all liquor license holders to serve alcohol at 6 a.m.

CASPER, Wyo. — In a 6–2 vote Tuesday, Casper City Council members approved changing the city’s liquor license ordinance to allow clubs to serve alcohol at 6 a.m.

The Wyoming Legislature updated liquor license statutes in July 2021. The new statute repealed a condition that prevented one person from owning two liquor licenses, and it repealed state-dictated hours of operation, allowing each municipality to determine local liquor-sale hours, according to city staff memos. The memo states that when the Casper City Council updated city law to align with the updated state liquor laws, those two changes were unintentionally left out.

The amended liquor license code now allows club license holders to serve alcohol at 6 a.m., the same as all other types of liquor license holders in Casper. The amended version says all licensees may sell alcohol starting at 6 a.m. and ending at 2 a.m.

On April 4, councilors voted 6–2 to pass the amended ordinance on first reading. Michael Bond and Kyle Gamroth voted against the proposed changes. Mayor Bruce Knell and Councilors Ray Pacheco, Gena Jensen, Brandy Haskins, Lisa Engebretsen and Steve Cathey voted in favor.

On second reading April 18, the amended ordinance passed with a 5–2 vote. Knell, Pacheco, Haskins, Jensen and Bond voted yes, while Engebretsen joined Gamroth in voting no. Cathey was absent.

In the May 16 vote, Gamroth and Engebretsen voted no. Knell, Pacheco, Haskins, Jensen, Cathey and Bond voted to pass the ordinance.

Councilor Amber Pollock, a Casper distillery operator, abstained from voting each time due to conflict of interest.

A more in-depth version of this story will be published to Oil City News soon.

Three businesses get City of Casper OK on new, transferred liquor licenses

CASPER, Wyo. — Three local businesses — Poplar Wines & Spirits, Gruner Brothers Brewing and Studio City Stadium 10 Cinemas — have received either new or transferred liquor licenses from the City of Casper.

At their May 16 regular meeting, Casper City Council members approved all three applications.

Tin Shack, operating as Poplar Wines & Spirits at 1016 Poplar, asked the city to transfer ownership of its retail liquor license to allow new owners to continue operating the liquor store and winery.

Kyle Ridgeway and Mike Kretzer signed the application as owners.

Previous owners Mike and Dave Reid intend to stay on for a time to help with the transition. The new owners plan to add 50–75 gaming machines in an area now used for storage. There is a $100 transfer fee.

During public comment at the council meeting, Ridgeway, vice president of 307 Horse Racing, said the Poplar Wines & Spirits gaming project will take a while.

“It will be a construction project for us,” he said.

While offering support for businesses to operate as they see fit, Councilor Ray Pacheco expressed “some concern” about the additional gaming machines.

“We need to remain cautious as a community as we start to see expansion of gaming systems here,” he said. “We need to be a bit mindful as these [gaming machines] continue to grow in private business.”

Gruner Brothers Brewing, 1301 Wilkins Circle, wanted a new liquor license to produce cider. This requires a winery permit, according to a city staff memo. The business is also asking to sell other wines in its tasting room.

There is already a microbrew license at the address and it will continue to operate, according to the staff memo. State law has allowed for multiple license or permit holders to operate in the same licensed building as long as each licensee maintains a distinct area within the building.

Brothers Ben and Daron Gruner signed the application as president and vice president of the business partnership.

City Manager Carter Napier said the “unique application” with a winery license co-located with a brewery license is consistent with state statute and is allowed.

Speaking at the May 16 public hearing, Sonya Gruner said that while cider is classified as a wine, Gruner Brothers Brewing is not going to operate as a typical winery where bottles of wine are produced.

The city will receive $426 for the license.

Movie Palace applied for a new restaurant liquor license for Studio City Stadium 10 Cinemas at 5020 E. 2nd St.

According to a city staff memo, in 2021 Wyoming changed its liquor laws to require restaurant liquor license holders to have a dispensing area rather than a dispensing room. The area will be restricted to people 18 and older. Consumption in the area is not allowed.

Meals must now be prepared and served for on-premises consumption. Previously, the service of “only fry orders” or sandwiches and hamburgers did not qualify an establishment as a restaurant, the memo states. Movie Palace has plans to serve chicken sandwiches, french fries, hot dogs, pizza and appetizers.

The application is signed by Rand Pryde as president and Craig Hosey as vice-president/secretary of the company.

Napier said the request is consistent with statute, and the liquor license is not unlike those already issued to similar theaters on the west side of Casper.

The City of Casper will receive a prorated license fee of $1,286.

Reading’s WSL survival hopes suffer major blow as Aston Villa cruise to victory – Berkshire Live

Reading sunk to a disappointing 5-0 loss at the hands of Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon to further deepen their relegation concerns.

Kelly Chambers’ side were out played and out-manoeuvred by their opponents. Villa opened the scoring after 15 minutes through Rachely Daly, who got on the end of a low, driving cross from Kirsty Hanson.

Reading looked to respond quickly. Justine Vanhaevermaet did well to pick out Sanne Troelsgaard in the box, but the Dane’s effort was kept out by the post and Villa were able to clear.

The implosion then unfolded as Villa moved through the gears. Daly went from goalscorer to provider just after the 40 minute mark to set up Alisha Lehmann. Then, minutes later, she nicked it off Easther Mayi Kith and unselfishly found Hanson at the back post.

Chambers took no risks at half-time as the 26-year-old was substituted for Lily Woodham. It was to little avail, however, as Villa extended their lead early in the second half.

A slick move from the visitors saw Lehmann and Kenza Dali combine down the right. Dali then picked out Daly in the box, who slotted home her second of the afternoon.

Everything continued to unravel for Reading and Villa were in cruise control. Mayumi Pacheco picked out Daly with a dangerous through ball and the England star finished to complete her hat-trick and put Villa five goals to the good.

Villa kept threatening as the second half drew to a close, but the Royals were just about able to keep the scoreline at five. Regardless, it was a disappointing afternoon for Chambers’ side as they remain at the foot of the WSL table.

Just two games remain against relegation rivals Tottenham and at home to Chelsea on the final day. Reading must win at least one of their final fixtures if they’re to have any hope of retaining their top-flight status.

Everything we know about Marvel’s ‘Contest of Chaos’ launching June 2023

Marvel has teased the Contest of Choas, but today we’ve got even more details on the story that’ll take place over multiple annual issues. Kicking off with Steve Orlando and Carlos Nieto’s Scarlet Witch Annual, the story will feature Agatha Harkness conjuring up the contest forcing Marvel a-listers to compete.

Stephanie Phillips crafts the larger story for an interconnected saga told across eight annual issues in August through September. The story features a rejuvenated Agatha who is younger and even more powerful. The story ends September 27th in the Avengers annual.

“CONTEST OF CHAOS is the kind of story I would absolutely sprint to the comic store to buy as a reader,” Phillips said. “There’s action, mystery, magic, and my favorite characters from all over the Marvel Universe. To be spearheading the storyline is just incredibly cool for me as a creator. It’s going to be big with ramifications for the larger universe… See you this summer—THWIP!”

The story comes with a nifty checklist which you can see below.
