Omar Sosa & Marialy Pacheco: Manos

Omar Sosa and Marialy Pacheco… two distinct musical minds, two unique voices, but seemingly of one vision, united as if by one heart, play soulfully like you have rarely heard before. In fact, not since Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock played a series of duets – performances that was captured live on a double album An Evening with Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea [Columbia, 1978] – has something quite so spectacular been committed to tape. What marks this recording as entirely different even from that high watermark of piano performances is the almost mystical nature of this recording, Manos, by Mr Sosa and Miss Pacheco.

They come from almost diametrically opposed schools of thought. Miss Pacheco is almost completely absorbed by her classically shaped background and Mr Sosa, by his Afri-Cuban school of thought. His dance is sparked by a drum-like heartbeat. In Miss Pacheco’s pianism you can often discern gigues and sarabands. But their discernable love for music and the belief that there is, but one music continuum – be it the one that echoes off the shores of Cuba, in Valdés, Flynn and Peruchín, or another that follows the line drawn in the sands of time by Scarlatti, Chopin and Liszt – that binds them together in a spiral of piano DNA.

On the repertoire of Manos Miss Pacheco and Mr Sosa conspire to underline six invented melodies [by one or the other pianist], and one Cuban classic, each with an incipient sense of drama. Light and shadows dance as if in a double helix. Be it in tragedy or in unfettered joy, a sense of catharsis prevails, in wave after wave of music. At any given moment in time Miss Pacheco’s instrument seems to draw towards the front of the stage. Often [and seemingly triggered by some mysterious cue] Mr Sosa’s twin Bösendorfer leaps in to occupy centre-stage, and when he isn’t harmonising and rhapsodising on some line left open by Miss Pacheco, he busies himself with his electronic keyboard, and the air becomes awash with celestial atmospherics; often this too is accompanied by a ghostly chant or chatter seemingly from the great beyond.

Case in point is the song El Bola, as well as midway through Low Tides. On the former, especially the top line melody and the harmonic accompaniment are unforgettably entwined like two lovelorn musicians playing below the beloved’s window. On Angustiado 4 Hands the outer movements are breathtakingly spirited, where textures are heavily weighted and the central, spiraling motif unfolds in a melee of long-breathed heavily pedalled sentences. Mr Sosa, clearly super-charged throughout, fires on all cylinders and both musicians exchange long-limbed improvisations through the montuno. Throughout, Mr Sosa has little to do except make way for Miss Pacheco who, clearly enamoured of her fellow-pianist’s beckoning flights, is easily drawn into the music’s slipstream. If I were to pick a favourite duet that would be on the ethereally beautiful Cambodian Smiles, which is altogether bewitching, its quiet outer movements are superbly articulated and beautifully understated.

The song Metro unfolds in wave after wave of stuttering, shuffling and dancing rhythms finally settling into a towering edifice teeming with chattering melodies seamlessly bound together by each pianist who suggests and develops an idea that is picked up by the other, who then proceeds to engage [with the originator of the idea] in a series of thrusts and parries almost as if challenging one another to a friendly duel. The two sections of the piece are broken up by a marvellously developed montuno section. This ravishingly beautiful set concludes with a rhapsodic version of Moises Simon’s El Manisero. This is a piece that so many pianists – both Cuban and from elsewhere – have contrived to bring to life. But the version on this disc by Mr Sosa and Miss Pacheco provides an account of the vital, colour-and-texture conscious real-life drama; the real thing, as it were, from the lips of the peanut-vendor. Such a spectacular live performance by two pianists will almost certainly be unmatched in many years to come. At one time or another you may feel that the mystical chanting and effects may gave something to do with this, at other times you feel it is the spirituality of Mr Sosa’s playing or the seduction of Miss Pacheco’s own pianism. Whatever the case, this is a feast for the heavens, celebrated right here on earth.

EU to press South Korea to provide Ukraine with ammunition – EURACTIV.com

The EU is expected to pressure Seoul to send ammunition directly to Ukraine during a visit by European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen later this month, EURACTIV has learnt.

Both EU leaders are expected to meet South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in Seoul on 22 May for the bloc’s regular EU-South Korea summit.

They are expected to ask South Korea “to be more forthcoming” on its refusal to send long-requested ammunition as well as other military equipment to Ukraine, one senior EU official told EURACTIV.

Over the past weeks, the ammunition issue has gained more traction as Ukraine prepares for its counter-offensive against Russia in the southeast of the country.

Ukraine’s European allies look to South Korea to provide military aid as the bloc’s ammunition factories will take several months to ramp up production, a situation compounded by a lack of large amounts of explosives available on the market.

Quick option

“South Korea has the capacity to provide the ammunition on short notice”, Ramon Pacheco Pardo, Korea Chair of the Center for Security, Diplomacy, and Strategy of Brussels Free University (VUB) told EURACTIV.

Since “stocks are low across EU and the US, they are looking at South Korea for ammunition in the short term, not only to replenish their stocks but also to provide Ukraine directly,” Pacheco Pardo said.

In addition, “Korean-manufactured ammunition is compatible with NATO’s standards,” meaning also with a large amount of equipment used by the Ukrainian armed forces, he added.

The EU’s push is motivated by the fact that “we have seen South Korea reluctant to deliver ammunition to Ukraine,” the senior EU official told EURACTIV.

Although Seoul’s production capacities have allowed “a degree of backfilling” of  EU member states stocks depleted by their deliveries to Kyiv, member states are not allowed to then donate them to Kyiv.

“From a legal point of view, South Korea says it is not possible for them to provide [ammunition] to a country involved in war,” Pacheco Pardo said.

Another option is for Seoul to sell the equipment to an EU member state, which will then donate the equipment, such as Poland did for instance, according to recent US intelligence leaks.

It is also unclear whether a direct South Korean supply to Kyiv would be faster than the current procedures.

“Even if South Korea says they’ll supply Ukraine directly, the equipment would have to go through Poland,” as the hub for the military aid deliveries, Pacheco Pardo said.

“The decision process would be faster because it would be handled directly, although South Korea already knows what Ukraine wants,” he added.

EU wants a role

The EU’s impact in itself will be little, “because the United States have already been discussing this with South Korea, although not publicly – and the US is a military ally, whereas the EU is a partner”, Pacheco Pardo argued.

However, there is a “political point” to be made, which is “important”, he pointed out, both for the Europans to make and in a show of support to the Ukrainians.

The EU would then add to the pressure on Seoul, on top of other close partners.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg when visiting Seoul in January said that “there is an urgent need for more ammunition, more weapons to Ukraine if they don’t get that they will not able to resist and repel the Russian invaders under Russian aggression”.

“What happens in Europe matters to the Indo-Pacific,” Stoltenberg then said, but added that “at the end of the day, [it is] a decision for you to make”.

“We spoke to South Korea about this, the weapon delivery and delivery of ammunition,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told the New York Times in April.

“But I don’t think that this is going to be possible without the intervention of the United States. South Korea is fearful of Russian reaction and Chinese reaction,” he added.

Global considerations

Seoul’s dilemma is linked to its wish not to set a dangerous precedent.

Even though selling to a country at war is forbidden, “I think if a company or the government decided to provide to Ukraine, I don’t think anyone would bring either to court”, Pacheco Pardo said.

Although, “if South Korea were to change its policy, then other countries in the world would ask: why not me?” “It sets a precedent: any other country at war would ask for the same,” he said.

It would then become “tricky” for Seoul to say no to them, he pointed out.

Russia says two commanders killed as Kyiv wages Bakhmut offensive

Kayla Harrison hints at Bellator move to face rival Cris Cyborg: “My contract is up in December” | BJPenn.com

PFL women’s lightweight star Kayla Harrison is still eyeing a fight against Cris Cyborg.

The Judoka has been out of the cage since her trilogy bout against Larissa Pacheco last November. In their first two outings, Harrison dominated the Brazilian, not even losing a round. However, in a massive upset last year, Pacheco scored a unanimous decision victory. In the process, she handed Harrison the first defeat of her MMA career.

Six months on from that defeat, the former tournament winner isn’t any closer to returning to the cage. Harrison announced her plans pre-fight to forgo the standard tournament format in favor of competing in their PFL Superfight division. Jake Paul is also a part of the special class of fighters, that is expected to compete on pay-per-view.

However, it seems that Kayla Harrison might not be around in PFL for the long haul. In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, the women’s lightweight contender teased a potential clash against Cris Cyborg. Harrison and the Brazilian have been going back and forth for the better part of a year. Earlier this month, Cyborg ended her free agency to re-sign with Bellator.

With a fight with the Brazilian seemingly off the table in the PFL, Harrison is willing to leave the promotion. In the interview, she stated that her contract ends in December, and Bellator knows where she is.

Kayla Harrison discusses possible move to Bellator to fight Cris Cyborg

“The goal was for me to fight Cyborg,” Kayla Harrison stated in the interview. “I know the PFL pushed hard for that, and it was my goal as well. That’s why I’ve been quiet, haven’t made a lot of noise. I wanted to be in the season, but I understood their reservations on that. They really felt that my best use would be in a big-name pay-per-view fight and that looks like that’s not going to happen.”

She continued, “…I thought it was going to happen. This is the second time in my life where I was like ‘Okay, this is happening, get ready’ and it didn’t happen. But I never say never, my contract is up in December. Bellator knows where I am at, and I would love to make that fight happen.”

Elizabeth Holmes has given a series of bizarre interviews to the NYT as she delays starting her 11-year prison sentence

Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes alongside her boyfriend Billy Evans, walks back to her hotel following a hearing at the Robert E. Peckham U.S. Courthouse on March 17, 2023 in San Jose, California.

  • Convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes has given a series of pre-prison interviews to the New York Times.
  • The at-times bizarre profile details what Holmes has been up to since her conviction and sentencing.
  • The Theranos founder says she volunteers for a rape-crisis hotline and dreams of doing health tech.

Disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has given an extensive series of interviews to the New York Times, published days after she managed to delay the start of her 11-year prison sentence.

Among other apparently sympathetic details, Holmes told the Times she has spent the past year volunteering for a rape crisis hotline doing 12-hour shifts.

Holmes hasn’t spoken to the media since 2016, and has seemingly used this opportunity variously to present herself as more human, to defend her record, and to continue to pitch herself as a future health-tech innovator.

On Theranos, she said: “I made so many mistakes and there was so much I didn’t know and understand, and I feel like when you do it wrong, it’s like you really internalize it in a deep way.”

Holmes experienced a spectacular downfall after then-Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou dug into claims made by her $9 billion health-tech startup, Theranos, that it had invented blood-testing devices that only required tiny amounts of blood. Carreyrou reported in 2015 that these claims were false, triggering regulatory investigations and a lawsuit filed by the SEC.

Holmes was convicted of four counts of fraud and conspiracy in January 2022 and was handed an 11-year prison sentence. She was due to report to prison last month, but filed a last-minute appeal that bought her more time.

The 39-year-old became known for her trademark black turtleneck, red lipstick, messy blonde hair and (as it turns out, false) masculine voice, traits that she admitted to the Times weren’t “authentic.”

Holmes’ partner, Billy Evans, and her two young children also appear throughout the profile. The fallen entrepreneur met Evans in 2017, as Theranos was collapsing. “Finding your person in the middle of all of this and experiencing that love when you’re going through hell is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced,” she told the Times.

Holmes also said she had spent time volunteering for a rape crisis hotline, citing allegations of previous abuse as her motivation.

During a hearing in December 2021, as Insider previously reported, Holmes testified against her former romantic partner and ex-Theranos chief operating officer Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, saying he had abused her both physically and emotionally.

She also shared with the court that she had been the victim of sexual assault when she was a student at Stanford, which prompted her to drop out and found Theranos. She told the Times that surviving the alleged assault at a fraternity party her sophomore year shaped her life choices. The newspaper reviewed a 52-page report of the alleged sexual assault. Holmes didn’t press charges.

Holmes also briefly touched on her ambitions to remain in health tech, particularly in COVID-19 testing.

Any hoped-for rehabilitation, however, is likely to be stymied by Holmes’ conviction; Theranos’ aggressive response to the Wall Street Journal’s reporting; Holmes’ deflection of blame through her trial; and her reported reaction to the death by suicide of one of Theranos’ first employees.

Representatives for Holmes didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.

After starting his UFC featherweight championship run by only fighting once in 2020 and 2021, Volkanovski vowed to be more active. With Makhachev’s return expected to come in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 21 at UFC 294, Australia’s finest had no other option than to keep busy in the meantime.

“I wanted to be active. I told you that,” Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel. “I was asked after the fight [with Makhachev], do I want to wait around for the rematch, do I want to fight at featherweight, what do I wanna do? I don’t want to wait around. They said, ‘Do you want to wait around and the only thing is if you wait for that fight, that might not be until the end of the year.’ We don’t know when that fight is happening but it’s not looking like it’s gonna be anytime soon.

“I ain’t waiting. I’d rather fight featherweight then do the rematch sometime at the end of the year, whenever it is. Whenever that fight can happen, that fight’s always gonna be there. I want to stay active and I told you I wanted to stay active and I wasn’t lying. This is proof of that.”

An interim featherweight champion was crowned in the form of Yair Rodriguez on the same night as Makhachev vs. Volkanovski. In the case that the undisputed champion wouldn’t make an immediate return, the interim titlist could keep things moving along. At UFC 290 on July 8, there will be no need for two straps as the pair will unify the gold.

One month before Volkanovski attempts to secure a fifth successful title defense, top lightweight contenders Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush will battle for the expected next shot at Makhachev. Despite the loss in his last time out, Volkanovski isn’t deterred from achieving his goal of double champion. Therefore, the best performance out of both fights may determine what ends up happening in the promotion’s return to Fight Island.

“When I do get that lightweight belt, you know I’ll be keeping both divisions busy,” Volkanovski said. “A lot of people were like, ‘How you gonna do it?’ This is how I’m gonna do it.”

FINAL THOUGHTS

This is actually kind of crazy for several reasons if true, and I see no reason for Volkanovski to lie. Him having the option to just wait until UFC 294 gives the interim much more logic, but with how things have all shaken out in mind, it feels kind of hilarious if he were to beat Rodriguez and go right back to fighting Makhachev. Completely eliminates the point of that interim … but what else is new?

Hope everyone told their moms they love ‘em yesterday. Let’s get the week off to a good start. Thanks for reading!
