“We all worked so hard to make this happen. I wasn’t going to allow some stupid snowplough to stop me or stop this show from coming out.”

Renner – who earned Oscar nominations for the war movie The Hurt Locker (2008) and crime drama The Town (2010) – had jumped behind the wheel of a snow-removal tractor to pull his nephew’s car out of the snow in Reno, Nevada, on New Year’s Day.

When the tractor started sliding, Renner got out but did not pull the emergency brake. He was then run over as he tried to stop the plough from hitting his nephew, resulting in more than 30 broken bones and severe trauma to the chest.

But after a stint in the intensive care unit and months of gruelling physical rehabilitation, he was able to walk the red carpet alongside Ava, his 10-year-old daughter from a previous marriage to Canadian model Sonni Pacheco, 32.

Asked why he had insisted on attending the premiere and walking the red carpet, Renner reveals that this had been one of the goals he set for himself as part of his rehabilitation.

“Everybody needs something to look forward to in life and, for me, it was about recovery. There were milestones in my recovery, from taking my next breath to taking my next step.

“So now I’m upright and walking a bit as much as I possibly can, and I wanted to do that for the show,” says the actor, who also appeared in the science-fiction drama Arrival (2016) and crime comedy American Hustle (2013).

“And I’ll be able to do this, no problem – this is easy-peasy for me now and I’m very happy about that,” he adds. “I’ll be a little swollen and sore, don’t get me wrong. But I’m happy to be here.”

Renner did not want the premiere postponed because the show is “really important” to him and its goal – to help underprivileged children – is a deeply personal one.

“I feel like I’m a big kid and I think kids are the future of our planet. But I believe they get underserved sometimes – they’re in environments where they don’t get to succeed so well, and if you give kids opportunities, a lot of great things can happen.”

Instilling resilience in children is difficult, he notes, but “certain things, like continuity and consistency, building confidence in a child – that, to me, is the definition of confidence or resilience, because it all binds together”.

Renner clearly possesses these qualities himself. Asked if he had believed all along that he would be able to walk again and attend the event, he says without hesitation: “A hundred per cent, without question.

“But I have a lot of support. There were a lot of people who kept me alive on the first of this year. And then I took it from there to continue to live, and I had a lot of support to allow my confidence, resilience, strength and will (to return). I can’t do it on my own.”

She will succeed Martin Plourde who in December announced his retirement, effective June 30, after serving as superintendent for six years of the district serving 11,000 students in the greater Whittier area.

“We picked a superintendent who came up through our system and never worked any place other than here in her life,” board member Leighton Anderson said

“We looked for intelligence, character, drive and commitment to knowledge,” Anderson said. We have found that in the person of Monica Oviedo.”

Oviedo has worked only in the district, beginning as a social studies teacher at Pioneer High School. She also served as principal of both Pioneer and Santa Fe high schools and was an assistant superintendent of both business services and educational services.

While at Santa Fe, the school received numerous achievements, including a California Distinguished School award in 2007, a California School Boards Association Golden Bell award in 2009 and a Title 1 Academic Achievement Award. In 2009, Oviedo also was named he Association of California School Administrators Region 15 Principal of the Year.

“She is the best qualified and trained superintendent we have had since I’ve been on the board going back to 1991,” board member Ralph Pacheco said. “We were looking for someone who understands the environment we’ve created for our employees and students.”

Oviedo said she doesn’t plan any huge changes.

“I think the direction we’ve been going for many years is the right direction so I think we will continue to look at all of our student achievement data and find areas where we can continue to get better.”

Community members praised the decision to hire Oviedo.

“I am thrilled to hear the news,” said Whittier Councilwoman Cathy Warner, who has known and worked with Oviedo, dating back to when she was in the East Whittier Middle School with Warner’s son, Jared, were in the school band.

Warner said she knows Oviedo’s parents, who live nearby, and worked with her when she was Pioneer High’s principal and Warner worked for Tri-Cities ROP which was located at Pioneer High.

“She is a consummate professional,” Warner said. “I know her heart is in the Whittier Union High School District as well as her professional capabilities.:”

Gary Gonzales, superintendent for South Whittier School District said he too is pleased with the decision.

“They’ve hired somebody who has great experience,” Gonzales said.

“I’ve worked with Monica a little bit,” he said. “I find her to be intelligent, a bright person and I think she will do a fabulous job there.”

Jennifer DeBaca Sandoval, Whittier City School District board  president, also knows Oviedo. She taught many years at Pioneer High.

“She’s a stellar leader,” Sandoval said. “I’m excited for her for what she will contribute to Whittier Union High School District.”

Oviedo earned a Bachelor of Arts in history at UCLA in 1990, a master’s degree in education at USC in 1999 and a doctorate in educational leadership at USC in 2004. She is married to Robert Oviedo, who is a teacher at Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights.
