With 25 candidates, Costa Rica’s election up for grabs

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Costa Ricans head into national elections Sunday facing a dizzying array of 25 presidential candidates, no dominant issue to drive turnout and nearly one-third of those intending to vote saying they are still undecided.

Those factors make it highly likely that Costa Rica will hold a second round of voting April 3 between the top two vote getters to determine its next president.

The last poll published Tuesday by the University of Costa Rica’s Center of Political Research and Studies showed that 31% people who planned to vote Sunday remained undecided and no one candidate polled above 17%. The poll surveyed 1,006 people by telephone between Jan. 27 and Feb. 1, and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points.

“Many options are being left open, there are many possible scenarios,” said Ronald Alfaro, one of the center’s political scientists. “This is very much in the style of the elections we’ve had recently.”

At least in 2018, the diametrically opposed positions of now-President Carlos Alvarado and religious conservative Fabricio Alvarado propelled Costa Ricans to the polls. This time there is no dominant issue.

Costa Ricans are frustrated by high employment, recent public corruption scandals and another surge of COVID-19 infections, but no candidate has captured the public’s imagination.

Fabricio Alvarado, who lost to Carlos Alvarado in a second round of voting four years ago, is running this time for his New Republic party. But he only garnered about 10% support in the poll.

Slightly above him is José María Figueres, candidate for the National Liberation Party founded by his father José Figueres Ferrer, who himself served as the country’s president on three occasions in the 1940s, 50s and 70s.

The younger Figueres was Costa Rica’s president from 1994 to 1998, but has been questioned over a $900,000 consulting fee he received after his presidency from the telecommunication company Alcatel while it competed for a contract with the national electricity company. He was never charged with any crime and denied any wrongdoing.

Also among the contenders is another experienced politician, Lineth Saborío for Christian Social Unity. Saborío served as Costa Rica’s vice president during the administration of Abel Pacheco from 2002 to 2006.

Previously, Saborío led Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department, which oversees criminal investigations. With that background she has tried to project herself as a strong figure, but her performance in debates has appeared to weaken her appeal.

The candidate for President Alvarado’s incumbent Citizen Action party is barely registering at 1%.

However, with at least 40% of votes required by a candidate to avoid a runoff vote the election remains very much up for grabs.

Costa Ricans will also select the 57 members of the country’s Legislative Assembly.

Turnout remains uncertain with new COVID-19 infections running around 6,000 a day. An election official had encouraged those infected to abstain from voting, but others have acknowledged there’s no way to keep people from exercising their constitutional right.

The government announced Wednesday that it would lift some pandemic-related mobility restrictions that kept a portion of vehicles off the road each day between midnight and 5 a.m.

Eva Longoria on loving her Latina roots and challenging Hollywood’s expectations: ‘Being Mexican is who I am’ | HISPANIC Network Magazine

The first issue of a new Marvel series aims to focus on the powerful, rich and uplifting stories of a largely overlooked and diverse cast of Latino superheroes.

While Latino superheroes have been part of the Marvel universe for decades, without continuity, many of them are often overlooked, said Aldama, best known for his award-winning book, “Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics” and the director of the Latin X Pop Lab at the University of Texas at Austin.

“I knew personally from reading comics that we had an abundance of Latinx superheroes,” said Aldama, who wrote the “Comunidades” forward. “But the Marvel encyclopedia didn’t even mention them. So there is a story that has been almost willfully ignored, or a history that we need to tell.”

One of the Latino characters featured in the first issue of “Comunidades” is Ghost Rider — a student mechanic-turned-superhero who drives a muscle car with his skull lit on fire. Karla Pacheco, the Latina and Native American Marvel writer who wrote the one-page story of the demonic superhero, says that she wanted to base it on a personal story about her father teaching her how to make tortillas.

“It’s a short story about growing up and learning how to make something,” Pacheco said. “It’s about remembering not to use measuring cups because your cupped hand makes a measuring cup for the flour, and you pinch your fingers just right to get the amount of salt, and then you flip it without a spatula off the cast iron really fast because you can’t be afraid of fire.”

For Pacheco, being able to bring her personal story to a Latino superhero is a significant step forward, because, she said, many diverse characters have not been written by writers of color before.

For Mexican Marvel writer Juan Ponce — who wrote a “Comunidades” story about a Brazilian sorcerer from the 1950s named Nina the Conjuror — discovering a character like Superman who came from another place and was adopted by a new family was enough to resonate with his own immigrant story.

“Obviously, he was a Caucasian man, but he was an alien. And his values and family really spoke to me,” he said. “I never really saw Superman different from my dad. They were both these men who really put a lot of emphasis on doing the right thing for the family and grew up in a farm. And that was the moment where I wanted to write stories about someone like that and carry my values to the page.”

Terry Blas, a Mexican American who wrote a “Comunidades” story about a young magician named Eva (she’s also the cousin of Reptil — a superhero who can turn into a dinosaur), was driven to tell stories for readers who shared common values.

Amara La Negra, singer, reality show star and rapper, is known for embracing her afro and her Blackness. But despite all her success, there’s one battle she’s always had to fight: defending her Afro-Latin Blackness. “I still feel there’s a lot of African Americans that don’t even know that there’s other parts in the world where there’s people like us and don’t speak English,” she told ABC News. “We’re not all African Americans. We are diverse in every single possible way you can imagine.” In a society that clings to categorizing people, Amara La Negra says she’s always having to explain herself.

Born Diana Danelys De Los Santos to Dominican parents, sometimes Amara La Negra finds herself being questioned by African Americans about Ber blackness, like on the radio show “The Breakfast Club.” “Simplify it for me, what exactly is the struggle that you’re facing?” Charlamagne Tha God, one of the show’s hosts, asked her. “You sure it’s not in your mind?” She’s also faced questions from other Latinos, including some in her home state of Florida, who she says questioned why she would participate in a Black Lives Matter march in Miami.

“They were like, ‘Why are you out there protesting? You’re not Black. You have to pick. Are you Latina? You Dominican? Are you Black? You kind of have to pick,’” Amara La Negra told ABC News. “They were saying a lot of negative things toward me. I guess that there was a part of them that didn’t understand how important this is. … It’s a humanity thing.”

In the wake of George Floyd’s death and a renewed outrage over racial inequality in America, there’s a growing spotlight illuminating the diversity of Blackness in the U.S. It’s a lesson that educator Jennifer Whyte says she’s been teaching for years.

The Spanish teacher is the only Latina and the only teacher of color at The Donoho School in Anniston, Alabama. In the rural South, she makes it a point to educate her students about Afro-Latin culture.

“I need to be true to myself. … I know who I am as a Spanish teacher and teaching culture,” Whyte told ABC News. “We’re the ones that teach culture. We’re the ones that bring up these uncomfortable conversations about race and history, too, because we do history. So it’s like we bring up these uncomfortable conversations about race, colorism.”

Pedro Noguera, dean of the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education, focuses on race and policy and believes the United States’ historically poor treatment of African Americans created a massive divide among Latino immigrants — even those who are Black.

“When many Latin Americans come to this country, there’s a tendency to try to distance themselves from Black Americans. And that’s true even among people who, phenotypically from Latin America, are Black,” Noguera said. “You think about American baseball, someone like Big Poppy, the great slugger from the [Boston] Red Sox, who is clearly Black, very dark-skinned, does not identify as Black. [He] identifies as Dominican, as if that were separate somehow from being Black.” Adding to the complexities in the United States, the Latino community encompasses families from many different countries.

“So many Latinos identify more with nationality. They will say, I’m from El Salvador. I am from Panama,” Noguera said. “Latino doesn’t mean a whole lot. It only means something to second- and third-generation Latinos who’ve been in America who understand the way race in America works. And so they will claim a Latino identity. But in their identity, there’s incredible diversity.”

In the U.S., most people strictly think African American when they hear of someone who is “Black,” but according to the the Slave Voyages Project, during the colonial period, about 15 times as many slaves were taken to Latin America than the United States.

How to be the go-to engineer for product analytics

Engineers are always looking for ways to differentiate themselves. Not only can niche expertise lock down employability, but it can also catapult one’s career in entirely unforeseen ways.

One of those niches that’s become more valuable in recent years: product analytics. As data-driven product development continues to balloon in popularity, so does the need for accurate and sophisticated implementation of analytics tracking in software products.

Here are four ways you can position yourself as the go-to engineer for everything product analytics—and simultaneously make yourself invaluable to both the product and engineering teams.

Spearhead a slick analytics implementation

From the perspective of many engineering teams, product analytics is treated as a second-class citizen. Every sprint planning, stories are prioritized, while the analytics implementation can be seen as an added step on top of the “real” priorities: the feature implementations themselves.

And this pattern creates lots of problems—both for the engineering team and the product itself.

But what if you could save everyone from this insidious peril? You’d be celebrated.

Consider a mobile app with a sloppy analytics implementation. All over the code, you have ugly calls to complex analytics APIs littered amongst your views and business logic. The obvious downside is that the sheer complexity increases the likelihood of bugs in the data you collect, which ultimately leads to a weaker product and an unhappy product team. But it also leads the features themselves to be buggy while universally frustrating engineers, because sloppy code makes everything harder to work with and understand.

More often than not, nobody leans into this problem, so everyone is trapped in an ongoing suffer fest. But the reality is that there are techniques for making your analytics implementation almost unnoticeable and very lean and clear in the few cases it appears in your core app code. Here’s just one example in a SwiftUI app.

If you make it a point to learn these techniques, advocate for them to your team, and take the lead in implementing them, you will be personally responsible for materially increasing the productivity of the entire engineering team that touches the relevant code while also indirectly (but noticeably) contributing to product success. And you’ll likely turn into the person on your team who can be called an expert on this topic, making your role invaluable.

Learn to uncover the trickiest of tracking bugs

Even if you haven’t yet found the time to refactor the analytics implementation overall, you’re still in a position to make an impact by spotting and fixing implementation bugs that can distort analytics data—and which only an engineer is in a position to see.

For example, a Signup event might be tracked in a place in the code that seems obvious at first but actually ignores an entire class of situations where signups might also occur. As such, signup events that are tracked could be off by as much as 70%, 50%, or—even worse—a significant but smaller percentage that might go entirely unnoticed by the product team and lead to continuously distorted data. On top of that, events could be duplicated if called in the wrong place, and events could be periodically skipped. You can find many more examples here.

The point is that some of these might be catchable by non-technical team members whose job it is to analyze the data, but a lot of cases could only ever be noticed by someone who understands how the implementation actually works on a technical level: an engineer like yourself.

You can tackle this problem by educating yourself on all the ways an event tracking call might be implemented incorrectly and thinking through ways in which these cases could be systematically tested. Once your understanding is solid, you can implement automated tests and/or educate your QA team with processes for testing, while also periodically reviewing code yourself.

And when you notice bugs, promptly informing the appropriate product team members can save the whole company from product missteps based on misinformation. You may be the bearer of bad news, but you’ll simultaneously be the savior from the consequences of sneaky bugs, which, despite all our best attempts, are simply a fact of life of building software products.

Keep the product folks technically up-to-date

Speaking of communicating with the product team, you should also make it a point to periodically update relevant parties about changes made in underlying frameworks and implementation details that may impact the integrity of analytics event tracking.

For example, the team may choose to refactor some or all of the backend from using a monolithic architecture to microservices. As such, a variety of event tracking calls may need to be re-implemented in the new environment and may or may not yield the same results as the prior implementation for a variety of reasons. If the product team knows something has changed (and on roughly which date), they can keep their eyes peeled for anomalies and catch problems sooner than later.

Likewise, you may choose to use SwiftUI to implement a new feature in your iOS app where all prior features had been implemented in UIKit. While both SwiftUI and UIKit have their own opportunities for issues when it comes to analytics, SwiftUI’s quirks are different than UIKit’s. The last thing you want is to introduce a new feature along with framework-specific bugs and have your product team conclude the issue is the feature rather than the implementation details. To avoid this, you might proactively let someone on the product team know about the change and set up a meeting for a future date. In this meeting, you could review the tracked data together to see if anything out of the ordinary can be explained by the technical change compared with their view on what the product team already expects to see.

Deeply understand the product perspective on analytics

The more you understand the deep reasons behind why a specific set of events, funnels, or metrics are tracked by the product team, the more accurately you will be able to implement their vision.

It’s no secret at this point that great products cannot be created without both excellent design and strong implementation. In other words, even if the design is phenomenal, the UX will suffer if the implementation is weak. Likewise, even if the implementation is elegant and iron-clad, the UX will suffer is the design is weak. You can’t have one without the other.

The same concept applies to the analytics piece of the puzzle. Someone on the product team can have an incredible vision for analytics tracking, but if it’s not understood with sufficient nuance by the person implementing that vision, the resultant data is going to be of limited use or even counterproductive. Even if the implementation is technically “bug-free,” it still might not quite meet all of the product goals in undetectable ways.

But if you understand the business reasons behind an event you’re trying to track, and you understand the big-picture goals that are going to be informed by the data, then you will likely end up the preferred liaison for all conversations about analytics between product and engineering. Product people will enjoy talking to you since they will see you meaningfully understand their needs and interests, and you will be uniquely positioned to deliver on the goals of the whole analytics enterprise.

Besides, I’ve interviewed hundreds of software engineers, and a surprisingly small percentage of them actually understand the product perspective with any real nuance. Not only that, most don’t really care to learn. Their interest lies exclusively in technical mastery. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. It just means there’s massive opportunity for you—if you’re interested.

Next steps

The product analytics market is expected to reach over $25 billion in the coming years, so this is not a specialty that is going to fade into the background anytime soon. And just as data-focused roles have been prioritized and carved out as full-time roles in and of themselves, product analytics engineering could easily become as highly sought. Right now, any company with a software product that has any chance of succeeding knows product analytics is a critical piece of the puzzle. The more you become an expert on the nuances, the more you can advocate, and the more you will find yourself in critical discussions that bridge the interests of teams beyond engineering.

Political Roundup for January 27, 2022

Senate:

NC-Sen: Ex-Rep. Mark Walker (R) has scheduled an event for this evening where he will announce his 2022 plans. Walker has been encouraged to run for the newly drawn NC-7 congressional seat as his Senate run has been overshadowed by the high-profile battle between ex-Gov. Pat McCrory (R) and Trump-endorsed Rep. Ted Budd (R).

PA-Sen: Dr. Mehmet Oz (R) has some important things going for him in his Senate bid-high name recognition and self-funding ability. So far however, he has failed to impress party activists. At an event a little over a week ago where Senate candidates faced state party committee members at a forum, he only received 1 vote out of more than 100 at a straw poll taken afterwards. Two more forums were held this past weekend with state committee members in different areas-he finished third in one straw poll and fourth in another. Former President Trump is said to have been “taken aback” by Oz’s poor showing and expected him to do better because of his celebrity. Ex-LG candidate Jeff Bartos (R) won each of the straw polls.

House:

CO-7: Businessman Timothy Reichert (R) is running for Congress. He joins Army veteran and former US Senate candidate Erik Aadland (R) and former state House candidate Laurel Imer (R) in the Republican primary. State Sen. Brittany Pettersen (D) is running for the Democrats to replace retiring Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D).

IN-9: Ex-Rep. Mike Sodrel (R) is apparently back for a try at the seat he previously held for one term from 2005-2007. Sodrel ran for the seat in 5 straight elections from 2002 to 2010, losing to Rep. Baron Hill (D) in 2002, defeating him in 2004, losing to him in 2006 and 2008, and finishing 3rd in the 2010 GOP primary. He joins state Sen, Erin Houchin (R) and Army veteran Stu Barns-Israel (R) in the primary. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (R) is retiring.

MI-10: Sterling Heights Mayor Mike Taylor (D) has decided against a run for Congress. Taylor is a former Republican who left the party last year. He had endorsed Joe Biden for President and Sen. Gary Peters (D) for re-election in 2020. Some Democrats, including the DCCC were hoping Taylor would be a moderate candidate that could appeal to independents and some Republicans in the new R-leaning district. Democrats do have candidates for the seat though, as Warren councilwoman Angela Rogensues (D) entered the race Tuesday, joining anti-Israel attorney Huwaida Arraf (D). No Republicans have as of yet declared for the seat, but 2018/20 US Senate nominee John James (R) and several others are thought to be interested.

NE-1: State Sen. Mike Flood (R) has picked up two big endorsements in his primary challenge to Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R). Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) and ex-Gov. Dave Heineman (R) endorsed Flood in a joint news conference, citing uncertainty with the race as Fortenberry faces charges of lying to the FBI in dealing with an illegal campaign contribution. The Heineman endorsement was not a big surprise as he and Flood worked closely while Flood served as speaker of the Legislature from 2007-2013. The Ricketts endorsement, however came as more of a surprise. Fortenberry however still touts endorsements from other GOP officials, including LG Mike Foley (R) and the mayor of Norfolk, Flood’s hometown. He also has the endorsement of Nebraska Right to Life, as the organization has a policy of endorsing previously-endorsed incumbents over all challengers.

OH-11: Ex-state Sen. Nina Turner (D) is officially in for a rematch with Rep. Shontel Brown (D). The move had been rumored since shortly after Turner lost to Brown by 5 points in the special election primary back in August.

RI-2/RI-Gov: Treasurer Seth Magaziner (D) is dropping out of the crowded Democratic primary for governor and running for Congress. He joins a Democratic primary that includes Omar Bah (D), who runs an organization for refugees, and ex-state Rep. and former state Democratic Party chair Edwin Pacheco (D). State Rep. Carol McEntee (D) is also considering a run. State Sen. Jessica de la Cruz (R) and ex-state Rep. Bob Lancia (R) are running on the Republican side. Meanwhile, House Speaker Joe Shekarchi (D) has announced he will not run for the seat that Rep. James Langevin (D) is retiring from. Still in the race for Governor are ascended incumbent Dan McKee (D), SoS Nellie Gorbea (D), ex-SoS Matt Brown (D), and CVS executive Helena Foulkes (D).

Governor:

HI-Gov: Rep. Kai Kahele (D) is considering a run for governor. Kahele, who is in his first term in Congress says he has been reassessing his political future after people have encouraged him to run for governor. Commandment 3: Embrace Simplicity

Be straightforward and clear in conveying your brand’s message. A simple, elegant, and easy-to-understand brand is more likely to resonate with your target audience. A captivating logo is the cornerstone of your visual identity. Its design should reflect your brand’s attributes and remain aesthetically pleasing even when resized or printed in black and white.

Color Palette

Choose a color palette that is harmonious and evokes the emotions you want your audience to associate with your brand. This will help in building a strong brand association over time.

Commandment 5: Tell a Compelling Story

A powerful brand story is an invaluable asset to your tech branding. It humanizes your company and establishes an emotional connection with your audience. To create a compelling story, identify the key experiences that shaped your company’s development and use it to convey your mission and identity.

Commandment 6: Create a Memorable Tagline

A tagline is a succinct phrase that encapsulates your brand’s essence. Make sure it’s concise, catchy, and relevant to your target audience. A clever tagline can significantly enhance your branding efforts.

Commandment 7: Foster a Brand Personality

Give your brand a unique personality that resonates with your target audience. Develop a distinctive voice for your written and spoken communication as part of your brand personality. Humanizing your brand will create an emotional bond with your customers, making them more likely to remember and recommend you.

Commandment 8: Utilize Powerful Content Marketing

High-quality content is one of the most effective ways to establish your brand. Create content that provides value, showcases your expertise, and aligns with your brand values. Successful content marketing reinforces your brand story, engages your audience, and generates positive brand perceptions.

Commandment 9: Ensure a Seamless Digital Experience

For a tech brand, the digital experience should be flawless. Invest time and resources in designing a user-friendly website, mobile app, and other digital touchpoints. Prioritize intuitive navigation, fast load times, and responsiveness to provide a seamless experience for your customers.

Commandment 10: Continuously Evolve

Branding is not a static process. Continuously monitor your audience’s preferences, industry trends, and your competitors to identify areas for improvement. Adapting and evolving your brand will keep it fresh, and relevant in the ever-changing digital landscape.

In conclusion, successful tech branding is the product of a well-defined strategy, consistency, simplicity, and constant adaptation. Pay attention, it’s coming to you: The Philippine president, Rodrigo Duterte, has ordered the arrest of unvaccinated people who violate stay-at-home orders aimed at curbing “galloping” coronavirus infections driven by the Omicron variant. Coronavirus vaccinations are voluntary in the nation of more than 100 million people, and less than half the population have so far completed their jabs.

Nose coffee: In checking the “American Spectator” a headline caught my eye. “Hillary Clinton: The Greasy Pole Beckons Again”. The first image that popped into my mind was of Hilly pole dancing. I nose-sprayed coffee all over my keyboard.

He speaks for “his” people, not the electorate: Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said during the January 6 Day of Remembrance and Action candlelight vigil that Republicans are the “shrinking minority party standing with the most authoritarian, fascistic elements of the whole country.” Raskin opened his speech at the candlelight vigil to claim that many pro-law enforcement Americans are “phony.” The event, which Antifa partly organized, was attended by representatives of over 100 “activist” groups. If it weren’t for double standards, they wouldn’t have any.

Why, just why: Two deputies from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office took their own lives, leaving behind a 1-month-old son. According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy Clayton Osteen tried to kill himself on New Year’s Eve, shortly before midnight. He was taken to the hospital and removed from life support on Jan. 2. Officials said Deputy Victoria Pacheco took her own life after learning of Osteen’s death. Osteen, a SWAT team member, was named Deputy of the Year in 2020 and had served in the U.S. Marine Corps. To date there has been no “reason” identified. This is just a horrible waste. I just can’t wrap my head around this. Just can’t

Colleterial pandemic problems: Conscripts in Norway have been ordered to return their underwear, bras and socks after the end of their military service so that the next group of recruits can use them. The Norwegian military said Monday that it is struggling with dwindling supplies, in part due to the pandemic. Military service is mandatory for both men and women in Norway and lasts between 12 and 19 months. Until recently, the roughly 8,000 young men and women who every year do their military service returned their outer clothing but were allowed to leave barracks with the underwear and socks.

Weekend movie: “Skin Trade”. After his family is murdered, a detective (Dolph Lundgren) tracks the culprit (Ron Perlman) to Thailand and teams up with a Thai agent (Tony Jaa) to bring him to justice and take down his human-trafficking ring. Some great martial arts, a little short on story, acting about what you’d expect, but pretty good Saturday beer and Cheetos movie.

Binged on “Cobra Kai”. Yeah. I remember seeing the “Karate Kid” when it came out. Yeah, I’m that old.
