Watch: TOM MORELLO Performs At WAYNE KRAMER’s 75th-Birthday Party – BLABBERMOUTH.NET

Tom Morello joined MC5 guitar legend Wayne Kramer on stage to celebrate Kramer‘s 75th birthday Saturday night (April 29) at a rockin’ benefit concert for Jail Guitar Doors, the social justice arts nonprofit Kramer founded with his wife, Margaret Saadi Kramer, and fellow activist and troubadour Billy Bragg.

The event took place at Jail Guitar Doors‘ C.A.P.O. Center, a newly launched community arts center in Los Angeles’s Fairfax District. They also celebrated with an open house there earlier in the day where community members took part in family-friendly activities including graffiti art and breakdancing workshops from hip-hop charity No Easy Props as well as tours of the in-house music studio.

The night featured an array of performances from Jail Guitar Doors teachers and music students including JASON HEATH & THE GREEDY SOULS and LAENA featuring Cole Berliner as well as a thrilling rock set by Raul Pacheco from OZOMATLI, who was joined by a full band as Kramer looked on smiling from ear to ear.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE‘s Morello capped off the night by performing a rousing cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s song “The Ghost of Tom Joad” to a sold-out crowd and joined Kramer for an incredible finale on “Kick Out The Jams”, the title track from MC5‘s 1969 album that helped make the pioneering Detroit rockers famous.

At the end of the night, Kramer was presented with a birthday cake resembling the red, white and blue Stars and Stripes Stratocaster he usually plays as the entire room sang “Happy Birthday”.

Founded in 2008, Jail Guitar Doors USA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works toward a more fair and just America. It provides musical instruments and mentorship to help rehabilitate individuals experiencing incarceration through the transformative power of music and provides music and arts programming for underserved and system-impacted youth to disrupt systemic root causes of inequality.

Free digital book Publishing Guide– Part 2– Features of the digital book market

Free digital book Publishing Guide– Part 2– Features of the book market

The Current State of the marketplace
In my initial short article, I detailed the large benefits to book posting, especially for the writer! Currently you have actually ended up being thrilled by that, it is time to infuse a little realistic look! Since the introduction of individual electronic aides (or ‘PDAs’) as well as the development of the Internet, market fanatics have actually been forecasting the best death of the published publication.
Conventional publications do not call for a power supply or batteries as well as can be reviewed also when terribly harmed (so called “stylish deterioration”). Standard published publications are below to remain!
At the minute, book sales are still just a small portion of general publication sales digital as well as wordwide posting stays a really premature market. There are likewise completing software application layouts and also portable gadget producers (as well as typical PCs).
Future Growth Prospects
It is likewise incorrect to disregard e-books as a concept that will certainly never ever remove (as numerous sector stalwarts appear wont to do). Why? Well, since that is that (a) books are currently doing quite well as well as (b) the significant gamers are still spending!
In 2005, Amazon just recently got French firm Mobipocket from Franklin for $2.5 million (to disperse digital books) and also BookSurge.com (to cover print-on-demand publications). Look at the Amazon PageRank of e-books on Amazon’s website and also you could be shocked exactly how well several are doing!
Books are specifically fit to the circulation of company, computer as well as scholastic jobs (with a high yet little worth particular niche market). Participants of the Open e-book Forum (OeBF) reported $3.2 m of sales in Q3 2004, a 25% boost over the very same duration in 2003.
Functions of the digital book market
At a standard degree, one can identify 5 major parts to the arising ePublishing market:
1) Free circulation – epitomised by Project Gutenberg; began in 1971 (in the extremely earliest days of the web) as well as currently preserved by a military of volunteers. Peer-to-peer (typically prohibited as well as totally free) circulation making use of Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Usenet as well as submit sharing software program (like Kazaa, BitTorrent & Limeware) has yet to take off in the publication market as it has actually in tape-recorded songs. It could be simple to melt MP3s from a CD, yet checking a publication, page-by-page to produce a message data is past the abilities and also perseverance of virtually everybody!
2) Own circulation – all regarding marketing your digital books using your very own web site. At the fundamental degree, you sign up a domain name using an organizing company (e.g. 1 & 1 Internet Ltd) as well as produce some web pages utilizing Net Objects Fusion or comparable style software application.
At one end of the range is the on the internet matching of the typical ‘vanity author’ firms; where you are billed an up front cost to provide your publication yet after that obtain 100% of the sales invoices. With Alexa PageRanks over 170,000, there are simply not adequate customers consistently checking out these website to make them worth your while (specifically when one leaves out the unlucky writers appreciating their jobs).
In the center of the range is the aristocracy bookseller that does not impose an up front fee yet rather pays you a %age aristocracy on each e-book they market for you. They additionally produce affordable internet website traffic, with an Alexa ranking of 5,421– so I would certainly think about Lulu however ditch the remainder in this classification.
At the various other end of the range are the significant on-line booksellers. Of the large 4 (Amazon, Borders, Barnes & Noble as well as BOL.com) just Amazon disperse digital books on their website and also after that Amazon just approve titles from their representative, Ingrams.
4) Distributors – The finest “back door” right into Ingrams (that usually do not deal with tiny authors) and also therefore right into Amazon is by means of their subsidiary Lightning Source International (LSI) LSI take care of the supply and also innovation for safe download of titles on Amazon.com, eBookmall.com, Diesel-Ebooks. I get many of my sales using LSI (crawler shocking when one takes into consideration Amazon have an Alexa Rank of 13!
5) Aggregators– Content Reserve are the greatest as well as best understood, offering an expanding variety of town libraries, along with a network of merchants consisting of eBooks.com, WHSmith, SimonSays, Fictionwise and also eFollett.com. Web content Reserve do experience from a “negative press”, at times, in Internet discussion forums on their rate of settlement. They likewise bill up front storage space costs for holding supply (a billing framework that punishes tiny posting clothing with couple of titles).
eReader.com as well as Mobipocket finish this team, being both suppliers of (totally free to download and install) book visitor software program and also a database for e-book downloads. Whilst eReader is presently much more preferred, specifically with Palm individuals, Mobipocket looks readied to expand in relevance, offered it’s current sale to Amazon Europe as well as Amazon’s strategies to incorporate Mobipocket right into Amazon UK. Mobipocket’s visitor software program additionally works with Blackberries as well as Smart Phones (therefore being even more system independent) as well as works with the arising and also non-proprietary Open e-book style.
Verdicts
With such a minimal variety of authors examining digital book designs, the marketplace for me basically comes down to Lulu, LSI, Content Reserve and also Mobipocket. Whilst premature and also restricted by variety, the e-book market is proliferating. This development looks readied to proceed.
In phase 3 of my complimentary digital book Publishing Guide (“creating your digital book”), I check out exactly how to compose as well as style your publication for book circulation, consisting of the production of concealed art.

Lightning Source, the digital book representative made use of by Amazon in the United States, marketed its millionth print-on-demand publication in April 2004. In 2005, Amazon lately got French business Mobipocket from Franklin for $2.5 million (to disperse digital books) and also BookSurge.com (to cover print-on-demand publications). Look at the Amazon PageRank of digital books on Amazon’s website and also you could be stunned exactly how well several are doing!
Books are specifically matched to the circulation of organization, computer and also scholastic jobs (with a high however tiny worth specific niche market). With such a restricted number of authors checking book designs, the market for me basically steams down to Lulu, LSI, Content Reserve as well as Mobipocket.

Flexural behavior of concrete slabs strengthened with textile reinforced geopolymer mortar

The need for retrofitting and strengthening of structures has increased dramatically in recent years. This is mainly to overcome deterioration in material performance resulting from aging of structures, material degradation, disaster related structural damage, and construction defects, or to enhance capacity of structures to withstand higher levels of loading. A range of new strengthening materials, such as ECC[1] (engineering cementitious composites), TRM[2] (textile reinforced mortar) or TRC[3] (textile reinforced concrete), FRP[4] (fiber reinforced polymer), SRG[5] (steel reinforced grout), have emerged over the years for retrofitting and strengthening of civil engineering structures. Among them, TRM or TRC is one of the most popular and innovative strengthening materials[6]. TRM or TRC comprises of a binder such as mortar or concrete and a strengthening textile like carbon fiber, basalt fiber or glass fiber. Due to the use of inorganic binder, TRM exhibits better performance under high temperature exposure than FRP, in which epoxy resin is commonly used as the binder. Thus TRM is an ideal strengthening binder, specifically in applications where fire safety is a critical concern[7]. In addition, low cost and better compatibility with concrete substrate also popularized the use of TRM strengthening[6] technique.

There have been considerable amounts of researches concerning the strengthening effect of TRM. Studies on flexural strengthening of RC beams have shown that TRM, as strengthening material, significantly enhances flexural capacity, as well as lowers deflection and crack widths in beams[8], [9], [10]. It is widely accepted that beams strengthened with more TRM layers have larger bearing capacity increment. Ombres[10] reported that the bearing capacity of RC beams strengthened with one to three layers of TRM increased 16%, 33% and 40% respectively, compared to an un-strengthened RC beam. However, increasing the number of strengthening layers may change the failure mode of TRM flexural strengthened beams. Ebead et al.[11] demonstrated that FRCM (fibric-reinforced cementitious matrix) strengthened beams failed by fabric slippage when using one or two layers of strengthening, but failed through delamination of layers when three layers of strengthening was adopted. The same phenomenon was also observed in Ref. [9], [10], [12], [13]. Generally, only strengthening layer debonding was found in FRP strengthening. D’Ambrisi et al.[12], who investigated the failure modes of TRM and FRP strengthened beams, concluded that fiber debonding of TRM strengthening involves the fiber/ matrix interface but does not involve the concrete as happened in the case of FRP strengthened beams. Compared with FRP strengthening, TRM strengthening has inferior strengthening effect in terms of load bearing capacity increment. Raoof et al.[13] investigated the strengthening effect of TRM and FRP, indicating that the strengthening effect of TRM was only 46% of that of FRP when one-layer of strengthening was used, but the effectiveness ratio increased as the number of strengthening layers increased from one to three. Elsanadedy et al.[14] also reported that FRP provides better strengthening effect than TRM, but further concluded that the ductility of TRM flexural strengthened beams were superior to that of FRP strengthening.

In comparison with RC beams, RC slabs have larger area of bottom surfaces and are usually stressed biaxially, and therefore the use of bi-directional textiles is more suitable for strengthening of slabs. Schladitz et al.[15] strengthened slabs with TRC and found significant enhancement in load bearing capacity, along with decrease of deflection in slabs. Koutas and Bournas[16] also found that TRM strengthening can increase the pre-cracking and post-cracking stiffness, as well as the cracking load, in two-way slabs.

There are also studies concerning the finite element analysis and flexural capacity calculation of TRM flexural strengthened members. Elsanadedy et al.[14] simulated TRM strengthened RC beams with LS-DYNA software, and defined the interaction between TRM strengthening layer and concrete substrate using surface to surface contacts. Portal et al.[17] modelled TRC strengthened slabs with DIANA software and defined the interaction between textile fiber and mortar by bond-slip relation. Similarly, Schladitz et al.[15] inserted interfaces between TRM strengthening layer and strengthened members to get more accurate results. A review of previous numerical studies clearly shows that, it is crucial to accurately define the bond-slip relation between strengthening fibers and binding mortar to correctly simulate the behavior of TRM strengthening.

As for the flexural capacity calculation of TRM/TRC strengthened members, Schladitz et al.[15] presented a simplified calculation model for TRC strengthened slabs with epoxy resin coated textiles and with failure of fiber rupture. Raoof et al.[13] modified the calculation model of FRP strengthening in FIB Model Code 2010 to obtain calculation model for TRM strengthened members, which was only suitable for strengthened members with failure of strengthening layer debonding. There are still limited models for bearing capacity calculation of TRM strengthened members, and the existing models are usually restricted to be used under specific conditions, thus, a universal model for TRM strengthening is in great need.

Currently, the most used binder in the existing TRM strengthening is high performance cement mortar or polymer-modified cement mortar. Elsanadedy[14] investigated the strengthening effect of ordinary cement mortar and polymer-modified cement mortar, revealing that polymer-modified cement mortar had higher bond strength between textile and concrete substrate than ordinary cement mortar. However, even though polymer-modified cement mortar can improve cohesion between strengthening layers and concrete substrate, further studies also revealed that bond of the mortar degraded severely when exposed to fire. Hu[18], [19] investigated the performance of TRM strengthened slabs under fire exposure, using polymer-modified cement mortar as the binder, and reported that the strengthening layer fell off in 30 min in fire and cannot meet the required fire resistance needed in most applications. Therefore, it is necessary to propose substitute with high bond strength and good fire resistance for the cement-based repair mortar.

In the past few decades, geopolymer has gained significant attention for its potential to replace cement because of its environmentally friendliness and similar or even better properties as compared to cement[20]. Geopolymer is synthesized by mixing alkali solution and aluminosilicate source material, including industrial waste like fly ash and slag, or agricultural byproduct like rice hush ash, and even metakaolin calcined at lower temperature[21], [22], [23], [24]. A great number of studies have been conducted to investigate the properties of geopolymer. It is found that geopolymer has higher early strength[25], [26] and bond strength[27], [28], better durability[29], [30] as well as high temperature performance[31], [32] than ordinary Poland cement. Laskar et al.[33] studied the bond strength of newly-developed ultra-fine blast furnace slag based geopolymer, Zanotti et al.[34] investigated the effect of curing pattern and PVA fiber reinforcement on the bond strength between concrete substrate and metakaolin-based geopolymer, both indicating that geopolymer had strong potential to be used as concrete repairing agent because of high early strength and bond strength. Pacheco-Torgal[35] also investigated the bond strength between OPC concrete and tungsten mine waste (TMWM) geopolymeric binder, demonstrating that the TMWM geopolymeric binders possessed higher bond strength than the existing cement based commercial repair product. Geopolymer have high bond strength not only at ambient temperature, but also at elevated temperatures. Zhang et al.[36] investigated the bond strength of metakaolin-fly ash based geopolymer, and compared it with ordinary Portland cement mortar and polymer-modified repair mortar, reporting that the bond strength of geopolymer mortar is close to or even higher than that of polymer-modified repair mortar at ambient temperature and after exposure to elevated temperature. Due to good mechanical properties, especially high bond strength at ambient and elevated temperature, geopolymer mortar is a promising binder material to replace cement mortar for structural strengthening.

For the application of geopolymer on structure strengthening, there are researches investigating the feasibility and effectiveness of geopolymer binder on carbon fiber sheets strengthening[37], [38]. These studies indicate that the flexural capacity of beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets using geopolymer is comparable to that using organic binder. However, limited studies are undertaken concerning the strengthening effect of geopolymer mortar in TRM strengthening. The authors previously investigated the shear strengthening effect of TRGM in RC beams, reporting that TRGM strengthening material can effectively enhance the shear capacity of RC beams[39], but the flexural strengthening effect and mechanism of TRGM were left unknown. Besides, very limited numerical studies were undertaken to evaluate the effect of TRGM strengthening on RC slabs.

Considering that the large surface area of slabs is more suitable for textile reinforcing, geopolymer mortar was adopted as the binder in TRM flexural strengthening of slabs in this research. The flexural behavior of five slabs strengthened with textile reinforced geopolymer mortar (TRGM) was investigated under static loading, and the critical parameters such as the number of textile layer, lateral textile spacing, presence of anchorage were varied. Additionally, two slabs strengthened with textile reinforced polymer-modified cement mortar (TRPM) and one un-strengthened slab were also tested for comparison. Since the goal of the experiment in this paper is to investigate the influence of the above-mentioned parameters on the strengthening effect of TRGM, one-way slabs are used to simplify the test apparatus. Following experimental study, numerical simulations were carried out on TRGM strengthened slabs, with different slab thickness, reinforcement ratio and number of TRGM strengthening layer. Finally, calculation formulae for predicting the flexural capacity of TRGM strengthened slabs is proposed, which can be applied for the design of TRGM strengthened slabs.

Garmenting: Costume As Contemporary Art to Open at Museum of Arts and Design in March, 2022 – GothamToGo

The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) will present Garmenting: Costume as Contemporary Art, the first global survey exhibition dedicated to the use of clothing as a medium of visual art. On view March 12 to August 14, 2022, the exhibition examines work by thirty-five international contemporary artists, from established names to emerging voices, several of whom will be exhibiting for the first time in the United States. By either making or altering clothing for expressive purposes, these artists create garments, sculpture, installation, and performance art that transforms dress into a critical tool for exploring issues of subjectivity, identity, and difference.

Garmenting as an artistic strategy emerged during the 1960s and 1970s. Its rise is linked to performance art, as garments used in installations often double as costumes in live and video-based performances. The practice came to increased prominence during the 1990s, its flourishing paralleling the emerging effects of globalization. With its emphasis on craft and the unique object, garmenting has been adopted globally by artists seeking ways to respond to the twenty-first-century blurring of socioeconomic boundaries, cultures, and identities. While some celebrate the hybridization of cultures resulting from globalization, others protest the fading of regional and ethnic traditions and communities; and many do both simultaneously. No matter their perspective, all these artists’ practices were shaped by transnational creative—and commercial—exchange.

The exhibition is guest curated by Alexandra Schwartz, a New York-based art historian, curator, and adjunct professor in the School of Graduate Studies at SUNY | Fashion Institute of Technology. Schwartz remarked, “Despite the current ubiquity of garmenting as a visual arts practice, it has not previously been examined or theorized. This exhibition centers contemporary artists’ exploration of dress as a formal trope and critical tool, using the language of fashion to address fundamental aspects of subjectivity, including gender, class, race, and ethnicity.”

“Garmenting furthers MAD’s mission to connect handcraft and design to the global contemporary art world,” said Elissa Auther, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator. “The artists brought together share objectives of upending tired distinctions between the fine and applied arts, creating work that explores the essential relationship between the body and the garments that adorn it.”

The exhibition will comprise garments, sculpture, installation, video, and live performances. Spanning two floors of the Museum, Garmenting includes an introduction to the concept of garmenting and its historical antecedents and is organized around five interrelated themes.

Functionality ~ One of the major issues with which garmenting engages is the traditional divide between the fine and applied arts. Garmenting offers a critique of this division by questioning what makes a garment “functional” (i.e., wearable in everyday life) versus “art” (i.e., for exhibition or performance). This section includes early examples of garmenting such as Franz Erhard Walther’s (Germany) interactive Werksatz (First Work Set) [1963-69] and Blue Days (1996) by Louise Bourgeois (France-USA), and continues with works by Annette Messager (France), Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz (USA), Beverly Semmes (USA), Vivan Sundaram (India), and Nazareth Pacheco (Brazil), among others.

Gender ~ Clothing is intimately intertwined with the construction of gender. Traditionally, femininity, and particularly female desirability, has been closely associated with clothing and adornment. Artists in this section, including Zoë Buckman (United Kingdom), Annette Messager (France), and Esmaa Mohamoud (Canada), cast a critical eye on these conventions.

LGBTQ+ identities are also intimately associated with clothing, especially drag. In queer communities, dress has always been deployed in self-fashioning, group formation, protest, and disguise, as in the work of Kent Monkman (Cree-Canada) and Raúl de Nieves (Mexico). Today, societal perceptions of gender seem to be becoming more inclusive overall. Artists have played a key role in effecting these changes. Influenced by feminist and queer theory, many use garmenting to look critically at the construction—and disruption—of gender identities.

Activism ~ Artists have long practiced garmenting as an activist gesture, deploying the symbolism inherent in dress—particularly in relation to gender, sexuality, and cultural difference—to help advance a political agenda. For some, the activism is inherent in the making, as for Oliver Herring (Germany), who co-opted knitting’s feminine associations to express his feelings as a gay man. Political expression is tied to performance and protest in works from Jeffrey Gibson (Mississippi Band Choctaw/Cherokee-USA), Sheelasha Rajbhandari (Nepal), Jakkai Siributr (Thailand), and more.

Cultural Difference ~ Clothing has always been instrumental to the formation and protection of group identities. Historically, dress was primarily determined by cultural identifiers such as ethnicity, region, religion, and class. Many of these markers have been eroded by industrialization and globalization. For cultures under threat by outside influences, traditional dress can be essential to preserving group identities and histories, as is often the case among Indigenous cultures. By the same token, dress can serve as armor or disguise, shielding individuals and groups from discrimination or violence. Artists in this section, including Nick Cave (USA), Tanis S’eiltin (Tlingit-USA), Mary Sibande (South Africa), and Yinka Shonibare CBE (Nigeria), use the vocabulary of dress to combat threats to, help preserve, or reflect upon racial, ethnic, and cultural identities and difference.

Performance ~ The rise of performance art in the 1960s helped precipitate that of garmenting, and the two practices have always been intimately linked. Garmenting includes a live performance series at MAD, and a different artist, including Enoch Cheng (Hong Kong), Jaamil Olawale Kosoko (USA), and A young Yu (Korea), will perform at the Museum each month of the exhibition’s run. At all other times, the gallery will feature video footage of past performances by each participating performance artist. While these artists’ backgrounds and practices are diverse, they share concerns around how the language of dress affects bodies in motion, often intersecting with gender, cultural difference, and activism discussed throughout the exhibition.

Live performances and activations involving five of the artists whose work is included in Garmenting will be presented throughout the run of the exhibition on dates to be announced. In addition, Lexy-Ho Tai (USA), A young Yu, and Enoch Cheng will be leading in-gallery, drop-in workshops for intergenerational audiences.
