Jeremy Renner: I Wrote My ‘Last Words’ to Family After Snowplow Accident

Jeremy Renner Penned a Goodbye Note to His Family While in the Hospital After Snowplow Accident: Wrote 'Last Words to My Family'

A heartbreaking moment. Jeremy Renner revealed that he wrote his family a final goodbye letter while in the hospital following his New Year’s Day snowplow accident.

The Avengers: Endgame star, 52, recalled the emotional experience in a sneak peek of his sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer, which airs on ABC Thursday, April 6. “I’m writing down notes in my phone — the last words to my family,” Renner shared in the Wednesday, April 5, clip as he shed a few tears.

He also opened up about what was going through his head in the moments after he was run over by his snowplow in Reno, Nevada. “If I was there on my own, that would’ve been a horrible way to die. And surely, I would’ve. Surely. But I wasn’t alone,” Renner said, noting that his nephew, “sweet Alex,” called 911, “and the rest of the calvary came.”

In a preview of the interview shared last month, Renner noted that he was “awake through every moment” of the incident, telling Sawyer, 77, that he “chose” to survive. “[I thought], ‘You’re not gonna kill me. No way,’” he stated.

The Hurt Locker star — perhaps best known for portraying the superhero Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — was airlifted to a local hospital on January 1 and suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injures,” according to his rep.

One day later, a spokesperson confirmed to Us Weekly that the Wind River star was treated for his injuries, stating, “He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.”

Renner — who shares daughter Ava Berlin, 10, with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco — shared a selfie from the hospital via Instagram on January 3, which he captioned, “Thank you all for your kind words. Im [sic] too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.”

In addition to receiving well-wishes from fans, several of Renner’s Marvel costars shared their love for the Hawkeye star in the comments section. “Tough as nails. Love you buddy,” Chris Evans commented with a red heart emoji, while Paul Bettany wrote, “Love you mate. Sending you love and healing.”

Chris Hemsworth and Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo all wished the Oscar nominee a speedy recovery. Jimmy Fallon also shared a sweet message, commenting, “Lotsa love out there for you bud.”

Renner continued to share updates on his healing journey with fans via social media. “Morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years … Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love,” he captioned a pic of himself undergoing physical therapy on January 21.

He continued: “I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and thoughtfulness for my family and I … Much love and appreciation to you all. These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens. Love and blessings to you all.”

S’pore Man Gets S$18 Cai Png In Australia Comprising 1 Vegetable & 2 Meat Dishes

Cai Png With 1 Veggie & 2 Meat Dishes Apparently Costs S$18 In Sydney

In Singapore, economic rice is the, well, economical option for pretty much any meal of the day. Also colloquially known as cai png, it usually consists of rice and a selection of vegetables and meat you can choose from for a reasonable price.

Typically, a plate of cai png will only set you back a single-digit sum in the heartlands.

However, you might be shocked at how much the humble meal costs in Australia.

That was what a TikTok user realised on his recent trip to Sydney. On the video-sharing platform, he shared that he had purchased a packet of cai png that was S$18.30. This is several times more than what you would usually pay for cai png in Singapore.

2 meat & 1 veg cai png costs S$18.30 at Sydney eatery

His video showed a food stall that looks like any regular cai png stall you will find in Singapore.

But, if you look closely, you’ll be able to see a sign saying that it costs A$20.50 (S$18.30) for a packet of cai png with three dishes and a bottle of coke.

The OP added that the eatery is not located in the central business district.

In a separate upload, he clarified that he got two meat dishes as well as one vegetable dish with his cai png. The clip also showed that the portion is quite substantial, with the entire plastic food container filled to the brim.

MS News has reached out to the OP for further comment. We’ll update the article if he gets back.

TikTok users wonder why OP ate affordable local dish in Australia

Responding to a comment that asked why he went all the way to Australia just to get cai png, the OP said that his love for the dish “does not fade with distance”.

Another TikTok user commented that the cai png there used to cost A$13.50 for two dishes and A$16.50 for three dishes before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Clearly, Singapore is not the only one hit by the post-pandemic inflation.

Source: TikTok

However, this commenter said that the price of cai png is usually proportional to minimum wage. So, as Australia’s minimum wage is higher, the price of the cai png there is higher than ours.

Since Singaporean cuisine is considered foreign in Australia, it’s probably not surprising that our local dishes cost more there.

Despite this factor, we understand that sometimes, the taste of home is worth paying for no matter the price.

Lawmakers echo concerns they hear about PFAS

From fish being reeled in by anglers in Taunton to the drinking water at an elementary school in New Salem, so-called forever chemicals known as PFAS are everywhere, the questions and comments from lawmakers from various corners of Massachusetts at Monday’s Joint Committee on Ways and Means budget hearing made clear.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that do not break down entirely in the environment, and exposure to their long-lasting presence has been linked to serious and negative health impacts like thyroid disease and kidney cancer. PFAS chemicals are all around us — they are used in non-stick cookware, food packaging, children’s products, carpets, leather goods, ski wax, firefighting foams and more, and they have leeched into drinking water supplies and the soil.

And with Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rebecca Tepper, Undersecretary for Environment Stephanie Cooper and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bonnie Heiple before them at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Monday, representatives and senators impressed upon the administration that PFAS testing, mitigation and treatment, and research should be priorities across the state.

“The [U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s] new federal requirements for PFAS in drinking water means that our communities will need resources to treat and upgrade their drinking water supplies. At the same time, we need to address PFAS contamination in other media,” Tepper said. “We have been aggressive in Massachusetts in going after federal funds to supplement these efforts and our federal delegation has been supportive. The governor’s budget will fund direct new staffing towards our effort to test for PFAS in water and landfill facilities.”

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs would get $543.6 million under Gov. Maura Healey’s budget — an increase of $105.2 million or 24% that would allow the secretariat to hire 240 new staff members (an 8% increase in staffing), including 18 new employees to help the state comply recently-promulgated federal PFAS standards through increased testing at landfills and water facilities and to develop standards for airborne PFAS.

Those new federal standards set enforceable limits for pollution from two specific PFAS compounds in drinking water. Massachusetts regulates six PFAS compounds in drinking water but with a different limit.

“So we’re at 20 parts per trillion for a sum of six [PFAS compounds]. The federal standard is four parts per trillion for each of two PFAS compounds. The federal proposal also provide hazard indices for other PFAS compounds, some of which match up with our other four and some of which don’t,” Heiple said when asked if DEP planned to send EPA comments on the new federal standards. “So part of what our comments will focus on is reconciling the PFAS compounds that we currently cover with what’s proposed under the federal standard.”

Sen. Jo Comerford of Northampton used an elementary school in her district, the Swift River School in New Salem, as an example of the impact that PFAS contamination has particularly in smaller or rural communities that aren’t part of a large water system.

“It has to truck in, probably thanks to DEP, bottled water … and it’s about 200 feet from the Quabbin Reservoir to which it has no right, right, because all the water right now flows east,” Comerford said, alluding to the longstanding tensions between the Quabbin region and the eastern portion of the state that benefits from the reservoir’s clean drinking water that reemerged during Monday’s hearing. “So we’re feeling these issues significantly deeply and trying to battle them, and we have a disproportionate amount of septic and wells. And so we won’t be able to access the big water system money, we’re going to need actually home by home help if we’re really going to go there.”

But while drinking water is how humans get their most direct exposure to PFAS, Heiple said it is just “the tip of the spear with PFAS” and that efforts are underway now to figure out how to test for and limit PFAS in biosolids (like the sludge produced by wastewater treatment) and in the air.

“Those are in development now, people are figuring out ways to roll out standards that are in line with testing methodologies,” she said. “So a large portion of the staff that are included in the MassDEP portion of the budget proposal will go to air monitoring and technical assistance for communities. So, making real-time — or as quickly as labs can process the data and make it available — data available to communities so they understand what’s in the air that they’re breathing.”

Rep. Carol Doherty of Taunton took Heiple’s comment as a “hopeful, hopeful message.” Residents in her city have been fighting against a planned “gasification” plant in which sewage sludge would be combusted and turned into biochar. Doherty said it would also emit PFAS through the air.

Doherty supports a bill (S 2053) filed by Sen. Marc Pacheco of Taunton to impose a moratorium on the construction of facilities that generate PFAS emissions at least until data on airborne PFAS is available and health standards can be set. That idea got a favorable report from the State Administration and Regulatory Oversight Committee last year but never resurfaced after being sent to the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

Doherty also raised the issue of Watson Pond, which is under the care of the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Fish caught in Watson Pond have been found to have elevated levels of PFAS, she said. But the pond flows into Lake Sabbatia, which is under the city of Taunton’s jurisdiction.

“So the state has oversight responsibility for Watson Pond and it’s been tested. Nothing has come to us in the community about the testing of Lake Sabbatia. Is that the responsibility of the community? Or does the state help to support that effort?” Doherty asked. “How can you avoid having PFAS flow into Lake Sabbatia if they’re connected?”

Heiple didn’t provide a direct answer, but said DEP would make sure relevant data was shared with Taunton.

Sen. Michael Moore of Millbury, who previously filed legislation to prohibit the manufacture, sale or use of food packaging with “any amount” of PFAS added intentionally and to address firefighters’ exposure to PFAS, brought up a sweeping new bill that would implement many of the 30 recommendations made last year by an interagency task force that studied PFAS in depth.

Filed by Rep. Kate Hogan of Stow and Sen. Julian Cyr of Truro, the bill (H 2197 / S 1356) would ban the use of PFAS in most products to prevent new contamination, and create new programs to clean up contamination that already exists.

Moore asked if the new Healey administration has taken a position on the bill yet.

“The administration is reviewing it. As you know, probably better than anybody, it is so comprehensive. So I know that we’re taking our time to just look at all the different elements,” Cooper said. “Some aspects of, I think, the legislation are reflected in the budget in terms of investments in some of the areas that task force identified. But position on the whole omnibus bill is something that we’re still developing.”

The bill has substantial support from environmental and consumer protection groups, and at least 71 of the Legislature’s 200 lawmakers cosponsored one or both versions of the bill.

Oleksandr Gvozdyk defeats late-sub Josue Obando by decision

Oleksandr Gvozdyk defeated late-sub Josue Obando by decision over six one-sided rounds Saturday night at the Derby Room on the premises of the Fairplex in Pomona, California.

All three judges scored the bout 60-54 in favor of Gvozdyk, who improves to 18-1 (14 knockouts).

Gvozdyk, a Ukraine-born fighter who now resides in Oxnard, California, was rusty from the opening bell, having not fought since losing to Artur Beterbiev in October 2019. As the bout progressed, Gvozdyk began letting his hands go with more conviction, throwing and landing three- and four-punch combinations.

By the fourth round, Obando had a bruise above his left eye. Gvozdyk continued to outbox his opponent, at times becoming more aggressive in order to end matters, but Obando utilized his ring savviness to get out of danger.

With Gvozdyk in control, it was a matter of if he would be able to finish off Obando during the final round. Again, Obando, who was in survival mode, was able to keep Gvozdyk away from him until the final bell sounded.

Gvozdyk, who lost the WBC world light heavyweight title to Beterbiev in a fight he was winning on two judges’ scorecards, was originally scheduled to fight Jorge Miranda of Argentina, but Miranda reportedly was not able to enter the United States on Wednesday.

Gvozdyk’s ability to shake the ring-rust during the brief Obando fight suggests that the 35-year-old will be sharper in his next outing.

“He did what [he] was asked to do, [which was] get rounds in after [more than] three years out of the ring,” trainer Marcos Contreras told The Ring Saturday night. “We were ready for 10 rounds, but the [California State Athletic] commission only approved for a six-round bout.”

According to Contreras, Gvozdyk was used as a sparring partner for Ring Magazine super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and former WBO world light heavyweight titleholder Gilberto Ramirez in their respective bouts against Dmitry Bivol.

Obando, who resides in the boxing hotbed of Guadalajara, Mexico, drops to 20-35-2 (15 KOs).

In the main event of the MarvNations Promotions card, junior middleweight prospect Fernando Vargas Jr. of Las Vegas dropped Argentina’s Geronimo Sacco (10-7-1, 2 KOs) twice en route to a second-round knockout win. The time of the knockout was :54.

Vargas Jr. improves to 8-0 (8 KOs) and is trained by his father, former junior middleweight titleholder Fernando Vargas.

Welterweight Jerry Bradford of Tarzana, California, improved to 9-1 (5 KOs), defeating Toledo’s James Wesley (3-2, 1 KO) by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 60-54 in favor of Bradford.

Heavyweight Federico Pacheco won by knockout at 2:36 of the second round, stopping Halston Williams of Henderson, Nevada. Williams was making his pro debut.

Pacheco (2-0, 1 KO), who resides in nearby South Los Angeles, is the younger brother of unbeaten super middleweight Diego Pacheco.

Brazil Reckons With Artistic Treasures Ruined in Riot

The horde of rioters who invaded government buildings on January 8 in an attack on Brazil’s democracy left behind a trail of destruction whose full scope is only now coming into full view.

Following a painstaking survey of the ruins, the national artistic heritage institute on Thursday night released a 50-page report, the bulk of which is a photographic catalog of the damages. They go far beyond the shattered glass on the exteriors of the presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court, all architectural icons.

Modernist furniture was burned, portraits defaced, sculptures decapitated and ceramics smashed. Carpets were found soaked with water from the buildings’ sprinkler systems, as well as with urine.

The rioters — die-hard supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro who refuse to accept his election defeat — marred the iconic marble ramp leading up the presidential palace with scratches, some stretching two feet in length, according to the report. Into a historic wooden table at the Supreme Court, they carved “Supreme are the people” — a phrase popular among backers of Bolsonaro, who often strained against the checks of the top court.

Among the artworks destroyed was a 17th-century clock made by Balthazar Martinot that the French royal court gifted to the Portuguese king. The only other Martinot clock in existence is in France’s Palace of Versailles, though it’s half the size, Brazil’s presidency said in a statement. A 60-year-old bronze sculpture of a flautist by Bruno Giorgi was also trashed, and its pieces were found spread across a room on the presidential palace’s third floor.

Vandals pitched rocks through the canvas of a mural by Emiliano Di Calvalcanti. The presidential palace said in its statement that the painting, “As Mulatas,” is valued at $1.5 million, though works of that size tend to fetch quintuple that amount at auction.

“The damage was not random; it was obviously deliberate,” Rogerio Carvalho, the presidential palace’s curator, said in an interview while sitting before the disfigured painting. The work “was perforated in seven places using rocks taken from the square with a pickaxe – which is to say there is a movement of intolerance toward what this palace represents.”

The total cost of the destruction hasn’t yet been established. Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco placed the damage in his congressional chamber alone in the millions.

The day after the uprising, Justice Minister Flavio Dino said Federal Police surveys will enable the attorney general’s office to hold perpetrators financially responsible.

This collection “is an artistic treasure of the Brazilian people, which belongs to the nation and whose integrity needs to be respected,” Brazil’s culture minister, Margareth Menezes, told reporters on Tuesday. “The idea is to create a memorial about this violence we suffered, so that it never happens again.”
