The Dominican ultra-low-cost carrier Arajet has announced a new international route connecting Santo Domingo Las Américas International (SDQ) with Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport (EZE). This will be the first time the two cities will be directly connected.

A new route

On November 14, 2023, Arajet will begin operating three weekly flights between both cities on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Arajet has announced five new routes in the last couple of weeks. This created great expectation after the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) hinted about it on X. Some –including us– thought the Dominican ultra-low-cost carrier might finally announce a flight to the United States.

Instead, the airline received authorization from Argentina’s civil aviation authorities to begin servicing Buenos Aires.

Upon launching services to Buenos Aires, Arajet will offer 20 destinations in 15 countries across the Americas. The airline will turn one year old in September. In a year, it has created a low-cost hub in Santo Domingo, replicating the success of other companies such as Copa Airlines (in Tocumen) and Icelandair (in Keflavík). Arajet employs Santo Domingo as a hub connecting destinations such as Montreal and Toronto in the north with cities such as São Paulo, Santiago, and now Buenos Aires in the South.

A great opportunity

The airline’s CEO, Víctor Pacheco Méndez, said the Caribbean and Argentina are now better connected than ever. He added,

“For the first time, we will have a direct flight between our two capital cities, this way the passengers will not only be able to enjoy the first city of America or Punta Cana, but also Bayahibe, La Romana, Puerto Plata, Santiago, and connect with other countries through our hub. Arajet continues to expand throughout the region, so we can say that Dominicans and Argentines have an airline that connects them to North, Central, and South America at the best price in the market, with safety and comfort.”

Currently, only Aerolíneas Argentinas flies between Argentina and the Dominican Republic. Nonetheless, this company flies to Punta Cana (PUJ) with three weekly flights. It employs an Airbus A330-200 for this route.

The distance between Santo Domingo and Buenos Aires is 3,734 miles (3,245 nautical miles). According to data from Cirium, this would place Arajet’s non-stop service as the second-longest onboard a Boeing 737 MAX aircraft (behind GOL’s Orlando-Brasilia route, which covers 3,778 miles).

Where does Arajet fly?

Employing a fleet of five Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, Arajet offers 20 destinations in 15 countries across the Americas. The company expects to receive five additional MAX 8 aircraft this second half of the year. With the extra capacity, Arajet aims to strengthen its presence in the region and reach even more destinations (Miami, New York, and San Juan are on the company’s watchlist).

Arajet offers flights to Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Canada, Aruga, St. Maarten, Curazao, Ecuador, Jamaica, Brazil, Chile, and now Argentina. As of August 2023, it offers 104 weekly flights.
