The arms race on the Korean peninsula is intensifying | The Economist

OBSERVERS OF MILITARY developments on the Korean peninsula were given whiplash on September 15th. Around lunchtime in Seoul, news broke that North Korea had fired two ballistic missiles off its east coast. Shortly afterwards the South Korean government announced that Moon Jae-in, the president, had observed the successful test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile, the development of which the armed forces had previously declined to confirm. The parallel tests came hot on the heels of reports from North Korean state media that the country had successfully tested a new class of cruise missile over the weekend. For good measure, South Korea confirmed this week that it had recently developed a new cruise missile, too.

The tests highlight an accelerating arms race on the peninsula. North Korea, which refrained from testing missiles during a period of detente with South Korea and America in 2018 before resuming testing in 2019, has since continued to expand both its nuclear and its conventional arsenal, in the face of UN sanctions that ban it from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. It has focused in particular on new missiles that may be better at evading the South’s detection systems, rather than inter-continental ballistic missiles of the sort that could threaten America. Meanwhile the South has been ramping up defence spending and beefing up its own arsenal.

Building ever more fearsome weapons has been North Korean policy for decades. Kim Jong Un, the current dictator, sees it as essential to his survival, as did his father and grandfather before him. The South’s build-up has accelerated more recently, driven by growing concerns about the durability of the alliance with America, and shifting dynamics in the region given increasing tensions between China and America. Donald Trump, America’s previous president, fuelled those concerns with his isolationist rhetoric and his view of alliances as expensive favours to free-riding foreigners. So did the perceived lack of support from America when South Korea suffered a painful Chinese boycott after agreeing to the deployment on its soil of an American anti-missile system in 2017. Since taking office that year, Mr Moon has worked to make South Korea less dependent on America for its defence. He has pushed for the transfer of wartime command of troops on the peninsula from American generals to Korean ones and has tried to build closer ties with allies in South-East Asia.

Diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions on the peninsula have been deadlocked since a brief thaw in 2018 and 2019. North Korea has spent the best part of two years entirely closed off from the world in a bid to ward off covid-19. The restoration of a communications link between the two Koreas in June (following the demolition of a joint liaison office by the North a year earlier) did not lead to a wider detente. Then the North stopped returning the South’s calls ahead of joint military exercises between the South and America in mid-August.

The exercises, which the North views as practice for an invasion by the South, may be one reason it has resumed testing, reckons Ramon Pacheco Pardo of King’s College in London. “They need to test those new missiles to see if they work, and doing it now allows them to send a message of disapproval at the same time,” he says. There is growing disillusionment about the prospect of further talks. The ballistic-missile tests came a day after Sung Kim, America’s special representative for North Korea, met senior South Korean and Japanese officials in Tokyo to discuss ways to persuade the North back to the table. South Korea’s armed forces, which after past tests had tended to be cagey about identifying the North’s weapons to avoid raising tensions, wasted no time on this occasion in noting that they were sanctions-busting ballistic missiles.

The timing of the South’s test, too, is hardly diplomatic. The submarine launch coincided with a visit to Seoul by China’s foreign minister, who had met his South Korean counterpart as well as Mr Moon earlier in the day. He was there to discuss not just relations between China and South Korea, but also joint efforts to persuade the North to resume negotiations about its nuclear arsenal. Mr Moon’s speech about the need for missiles on subs to defend against “omnidirectional threats” will not have helped with that. Meanwhile, South Korea’s National Security Council expressed “deep concern” about the North’s “provocation”. As a South Korean saying has it, “What I do is romance; what others do, adultery.”

Meet Sonoma County Cheesemaker, Donna Pacheco of Achadinha Cheese Company

Donna Pacheco is a cheesemaker, a mom, a grandmother, a tour guide — just about anything the Achadinha Cheese Company needs her to be. Named for the small town in Portugal’s Azores Islands where Donna’s father-in-law was born, Achadinha (pronounced Osh-a-deen-ah) is the family farm and cheesemaking business she runs with her husband and children on 230 stunning, sustainably managed acres in Petaluma.

Donna’s husband, Jim Pacheco, is a third-generation dairy farmer, and their four grown kids — William, Daniel, Elizabeth, and David — are now the fourth generation to carry on the family trade. Together, they pasture Nubian goats and Jersey cows, using their milk to create farmstead cheeses and other products that they largely sell in California farmers markets.

The Pachecos also offer in-depth tours of their working farm because, as Donna says, “It’s important to know where your food’s coming from. What we do doesn’t work for everyone, but we want to share and give education about what our lifestyle is like.”

She and her family are happy to have a farm in Sonoma County, where they love the wine, the food, the people, and the land. “It’s beautiful here,” she says, “especially when we have rain to give us green, rolling hills.”

Capturing rain for drinking water for their cows and goats — which the Pachecos affectionately refer to as “the girls” — is only part of the farm’s effort toward sustainability. The girls’ manure is captured, composted, and spread onto Achidinha’s fields to nourish the soil; between rains, these pesticide-free fields are irrigated with grey water from the cheese plant, and the Pacheco’s beloved animals are pastured on them throughout the year.

The girls’ agrarian diet receives a surprising supplement from another local business. “We’re fortunate enough to get brewer’s grain from Seismic Brewing Company,” Donna says, “which is composed of  barley and hops that they steam and press. They take the liquid for beer making, and we take the fermented mash.” This mash is easily digested by the milking cows and goats, which results in the Pachecos’ ultimate goal: Dairy products that are easier for us to digest.

Cheeses aging gracefully at Achadinha Cheese Company

Achidinha’s cheese express the terroir of Sonoma County, from the native yeasts in the fresh pasture air to the natural molds on their aged cheeses. Two of the most popular cheeses are Broncha, a Portuguese table cheese aged 3-7 months, and the hand-rolled Cowpricious, aged 6-12 months — both made with a mix of goat’s and cow’s milk.

The dairy also makes a variety of seasoned cheese curds, fromage blanc, and a zingy feta that Donna salt-brines by hand. Additional offerings include kefir, butter, and handmade goat’s milk soap.

All of Achidinha Cheese Company’s products can be ordered for shipping through their website. In Sonoma County, though, you can find/taste them at the farmers markets in Petaluma, Bodega Bay, Healdsburg, and Santa Rosa.

Part of the California Cheese Trail, Achadinha gives public tours on Saturdays, and can arrange private tours for those who would prefer a smaller group. They also offer private cheesemaking classes during the week. Reservations are a must for all tours and classes — and since this is a working farm, you’re encouraged to not wear your best shoes.

After Almost Two Decades, Marvel Finally Announces The Reckoning War

After Almost Two Decades, Marvel Finally Announces The Reckoning War

As part of today’s big Marvel Comics Timeless announcements, Marvel included mention of The Reckoning War, sometime in January 2022. A storyline in upcoming Fantastic Four issues written by Dan Slott, drawn by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott, Marvel stating “Dan Slott is joined by Carlos Pacheco and Rachael Stott for Marvel Comics’ Fantastic Four: Reckoning War, an epic saga over 15 years in the making. The original secret war of the Marvel Universe has been reignited and every living being in reality is in danger, for we are finally at…Our Day Of Reckoning.”

As Bleeding Cool may have mentioned before, twenty-or-so-years ago, Dan Slott used to drop something into a number of his comic books at Marvel about something he would call The Reckoning War. A storyline that would upend the future of the Marvel Universe, centred on She-Hulk but involving The Watcher, the Fantastic Four, Gauntlet, Iron Man, Southpaw and many more.

In She Hulk #3 back in 2005, we discovered, from the Time Variance Authority, that actions already taken by She Hulk would lead to The Reckoning War. That this was a bad thing. That this was all She-Hulk’s fault, and emanated from something she had done in the first year that Dan Slott wrote her.

It would devastate not only the Earth but the whole cosmos. Marvel sources told me that Slott had tried to get this event to finally occur in one book or other for some time, but hadn’t heard about it from him for a few years.

At some point, maybe when he was writing Amazing Spider-Man, he put it on the back-burner, with just a couple of references in the last ten years.

With a repeated phrase, “there will be a reckoning”.

Recently in Iron Man, Dan Slott wrote about Arron Stark taking on the role of Iron Man 2020, believing in an imminent cosmic threat. He also wrote Fantastic Four travelling the cosmos, inviting all sorts of attention. And he concluded Empyre, a crossover event involving the Skrull and Kree, Fantastic Four, Iron Man and She-Hulk, to whom something very bad has happened.

From the very eye of The Unseen, the cosmically transformed Nick Fury, emerged the returning Uatu, The Watcher who Nick Fury killed before himself being transformed…

And promising something very familiar.

Is Dan Slott finally going to make “fetch” happen? Fantastic Four #25 was set up with that very familiar phrase, from the solicitation on. “There Shall Come a Reckoning”

And as he recalled last year…

I’ve been reading comics since I was 8.
There’s a Marvel story I’ve wanted to tell since I was 9.
Hickman reminded me “I was telling someone the other day about you pitching me this when we were on a plane to Dublin. 12 years ago!”
Tomorrow, I finally officially pitch that story.

— Dan Slott (@DanSlott) April 2, 2019

Fantastic Four #25 returned to the Blue Area of the Moon. The Watcher uses Marvel Unlimited to catch up with everything he’s been missing out on (with only a three month delay now)  before transforming The Unseen, with that phrase one more time.

Nick Fury, Agent Of Uatu?

Okay, so he’s bald, still has an eyepatch, and no cigar, and is going by Nicolas Fury, to distinguish himself from his son, Nick Fury Jr, currently running around SHIELD? And this is the first war. The oldest war. The Reckoning War? And have the Fantastic Four provided an opportunity for it to come to Earth’s doorstep? We even saw a reference from Sin-Eater, lookimg over Dan Slott’s Spider-Man run in Spider-Man: The Sins Of Norman Osborn.

And now? There shall come a reckoning in January…

State police seize more than 10 pounds of cocaine during traffic stop in Southbury | Republican-American

SOUTHBURY – Police seized more than 10 pounds of cocaine and arrested a Waterbury man following a traffic stop Sunday in Southbury.

State police say they stopped a Honda Ridgeline for speeding at about 2:30 p.m. after the pickup truck passed a trooper near Exit 16 on the westbound side of Interstate 84.

A trooper stopped the truck and found three people inside, including 30-year-old Joao Burgos-Alvarado, who was behind the wheel. After searching the truck, police found more than 5 kilograms of cocaine under a compartment in the backseat, according to state police.

Police say Cynthia Lacen-Pellot, 38, was in the backseat, while 29-year-old Maranyelis Pacheco, of South Main Street, was in the front passenger seat.

Police charged Bugos-Alvarado, of Whittier Avenue in Waterbury, with possession with intent to sell more than an ounce of cocaine and were initially held on $20,000 bonds.
