Professional Bull Riders Returns To CBS With The Music City Knockout 15/15 Bucking Battle This Weekend – CBS Philly

(CBS Local)- The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Unleash The Beast tour is riding into Nashville this weekend for the Music City Knockout 15/15 Bucking Battle. A trio of riders have a chance to make history this weekend and CBS will have live coverage of the event beginning on Sunday, August 22 at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Vitor Leme, Kaique Pacheco and Joao Ricardo Vieira all have an opportunity to take over sole ownership of the league record for most Bucking Battles won by a rider. The trio has six victories apiece heading into the weekend and will take on bulls all currently ranked within the top seven of the World Champion Bull standings.

For the 25-year-old Leme, the reigning PBR Unleash The Beast tour World Champion will face the co-No. 3 bull in Ridin’ Solo. Currently ranked No. 1 in the rider standings, Leme is coming setting a new record for high-marked ride when he took on Woopa for a score of 97.75 points. While a win in Saturday’s battle would set a new record for most battles won by a rider, Leme also has an opportunity to take possession of first place for the season record of most 90-point rides. If he’s able to reach that mark he would break the record of 16 set by 1999 PBR World Champion Cody Hart.

Pacheco will certainly have a say in things as well as the 26-year-old sits just behind Leme in the rider standings. The 2018 PBR World Champion will have a battle against the seventh ranked bull in I’m Legit Too, who has recorded a 78.57% buck off percentage this season. I’m Legit Too got the better of Pacheco back in May at the Union Home Mortgage Invitational 15/15 Bucking Battle bucking him off in 4.59 seconds.

Vieira draws the most difficult matchup in the trio in terms of rankings as he’ll take on Chiseled, the current World No. 2. The veteran is currently fifth in the rider standings entering the weekend.

The 15/15 Bucking Battle in Nashville will feature seven rematches. Only one of the rematches has seen the rider not bucked off. Dener Barbosa rode Marquis Metal Works Red Clark to a score of 91.25 back in May. The other six rematches are below.

The 15/15 Bucking Battle is part of a weekend for the PBR Unleash The Beast tour in Nashville with Round 1 of the Music City Knockout airing on CBS Sports Network at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, August 21. The Bucking Battle airs on Sunday, August 22 at 12:30 Eastern Time on CBS and then Round 2 and the Championship Round airs at 8 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.

Brazil After the Collapse

Health experts warned about it for weeks. In early March, the Brazilian health system entered a state of collapse under the weight of a nationwide spike in COVID-19 infections. Hospitals were not able to attend to all patients who needed treatment. By the end of March, all over Brazil, more than 6000 people were waiting for an ICU bed, most of them in overcrowded health centres and emergency wards without the necessary equipment and personnel for treatment.

In parallel, the power bases of the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro eroded in rapid fashion after he seemed to have consolidated his power in early February with the election of his preferred candidates to the powerful positions of speaker of the Parliament and of the Senate.

The year began with the collapse of the health systems in the states of Amazonas and Roraima in the north of Brazil where the new and more contagious P1 variant of the Coronavirus originated. The minister of health Eduardo Pazuello received warnings at the end of December 2020 that oxygen supply shortages in the state of Amazonas might occur by mid-January, but he only acted when this lack inevitably led to numerous deaths on January 11 in the capital city Manaus. In the first days of January, instead of oxygen, he sent thousands of doses of the anti-malaria drug Chloroquine to Manaus, which has no proven efficacy against COVID-19.

Alarm Bells and Warnings Ignored

The extraordinary increase in infection rates and deaths in the state of Amazonas rang alarm bells with health experts around the country, but the federal government ignored all warnings. Instead, in the midst of a decrease in popularity due to the health crisis, Bolsonaro landed a coup with the elections for the speaker of the Parliament and of the Senate in early February. Moderate candidates in opposition to Bolsonaro were the initial favourites for these elections, but Bolsonaro distributed millions of Reals (R$) to municipalities beforehand, and his two candidates won both posts: Rodrigo Pacheco from the Democrats party for the Senate and Arturo Lima from the Progressistas party for the Parliament.

This manoeuvre allowed the Bolsonaro government to forge a closer relationship to the parties of the Centrão (a grouping of clientelistic centrist politicians) as the basis for its legislative projects, since the government does not command a majority of its own. The election of the speakers to the Parliament and Senate also led to a split in the two centre-right parties, the Democrats and the PSDB (Brazilian Social Democracy Party), who were planning to field their own candidates for the presidential elections in 2022. Nevertheless, about half the parliamentary delegates of each party aligned with the Bolsonaro government for the elections, leading to infighting within both parties. The earlier president of the Parliament Rodrigo Maia even left his party, the Democrats, as a consequence.

Polishing Up Bolsonaro

The offer that Pacheco and Lima made to Bolsonaro was designed to organize majorities for the legislative agendas of the federal government in exchange for policies with a wider appeal that both politicians could sell to their constituencies. This arrangement would have served Bolsonaro in the form of a more stable power base in Parliament and society, and a professionalization of government policy making. It would have also served Pacheco and Lima in their role of domesticating Bolsonaro, demonstrating their leadership potential, since both politicians plan to stick around Brazilian politics for a while yet. In other words, this arrangement was perfect in helping Bolsonaro regain societal confidence and paving his way to re-election in 2022.

Yet the arrangement did not hold because the person who would have most profited from it stuck to his erratic form of politics, and ended up in political isolation: Jair Messias Bolsonaro. At the centre of the increasing isolation is his unwillingness to publicly agree to the most obvious measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic: lockdowns, curfews, social isolation, and the wearing of masks. This has led to enormous frustration and anguish in the army, and in the corporate sector, which finally understood that any prolongation of an uncontrolled pandemic will hurt profits.

Corporate Disaffection and Diesel Fumes

But there was a second reason why the corporate world fell out with Bolsonaro, culminating in a letter from 300 corporate leaders and economists, published on March 22, calling for a national policy to fight the pandemic based on science. The letter was signed by four former finance ministers, five former presidents of the Brazilian Central Bank and the national development bank BNDES, the two co-chairs of the largest private bank Itáu Unibanco, and the president of Credit Suisse in Brazil.

The letter, symbolising deep dissatisfaction in the corporate and financial world with the president, was preceded by the removal of the market-friendly president of the state-owned oil company Petrobras by Bolsonaro on February 19. Petrobras was at the center of the removal of Dilma Rousseff from her presidency and the criminal conviction against former president Lula. The decisive power struggle between the social-democratic Workers Party (PT) and the centre-right was always about the strategy around Petrobras, which commands very advanced exploration technology and has access to one of the largest oil fields on the globe, discovered in the 2000s.

The struggle centers around two alternate strategies. First, the PT’s strategy aims at a national developmentalist strategy with some amount of control over petrol prices for national consumers, both corporate and private. In contrast, the center-right strategy is focused on allowing oil giants from Europe and the US to access oilfields in Brazilian waters, privatizing Petrobras, and permitting petrol prices to closely align with world market prices. Both strategies represent the classic alternatives between a national bourgeoisie trying to establish itself on the world market with the addition of a specific national strategy, turning itself into a sub-imperialist power in Latin America, and the strategy of the comprador bourgeoisie that is immediately subservient to capitalists in Europe and North America.

At the start of February, Brazilian truckers, who were long seen as allies of Bolsonaro, became increasingly frustrated with his government and threatened a large strike in response to increases in the price of diesel. The strike failed to materialize due to disunity among truckers, but it, nonetheless, led Bolsonaro to reconsider pricing policy at Petrobras. He intervened in the company and replaced market-friendly Roberto Castello Branco with an army general. At present, it is unclear if there will be a pricing policy change at Petrobras or how it will look, but the audacity of government intervention with regard to this embattled oil giant was enough for a serious fallout between the corporate world and Bolsonaro.

Head in the COVID-19 Sand

The escalating health crisis and the dwindling of support for Bolsonaro among corporate and financial elites has led to a rearrangement of political forces. Since early March, the number of infections and deaths due to COVID-19 has increased rapidly all over Brazil. The majority of states are experiencing overloaded ICUs. On March 22, in the state of São Paulo with 45 million inhabitants, 30,000 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, and of these 12,000 were in ICU beds. By way of comparison, Germany has some 80 million inhabitants and an ICU capacity of 10,000 beds for COVID-19 patients, i.e., just half the capacity per person than the state of São Paulo has.

While the health crisis rages, Bolsonaro continues to speak out against lockdowns and curfews. He even went to the Supreme Court on March 19 with an injunction to prohibit federal governors and mayors from deciding on lockdowns and curfews. This was rejected by the court through the technicality that it lacked the signature of the federal state attorney – it turned out he declined to provide the signature.

At this point, Lira, Pacheco, and the Centrão decided to collect on the deal Bolsonaro had with them: they demanded a change at the ministry of health. Eduardo Pazuello had become health minister in May 2020 as an interim measure after Nelson Teich quit the job after less than a month. Usually, the health minister is a medical professional in Brazil, but Pazuello was a military man with no medical expertise. In his ten months in office, he remained subservient to Bolsonaro and obstructed any systematic coordination of policies to contain the pandemic. Indeed, the customary regular meetings between state governors and the federal president had not taken place for ten months, which speaks volumes alone.

Pazuello was finally replaced on March 23 by Marcelo Queiroga, a cardiologist who immediately made calls for social distancing and masks, and installed a national crisis committee to contain the pandemic. He spoke out against a national lockdown, but his positions represent a large improvement in comparison to the ones of Pazuello, who kept promoting Chloroquine as a treatment against COVID-19.

Just after the first meeting of the crisis committee, which was headed by Queiroga, Lima and Pacheco made a joint statement, while Bolsonaro made his own statement, railing against social distancing once again. The contrast could not have been greater.

Lula is Back

Another event that hit the political scene in Brazil like a bombshell and increased pressure on Bolsonaro was the decision by the Supreme Court judge Edson Fachin to annul all charges against former president Lula on March 8, which immediately made him eligible for political office. Lula had been sentenced to prison in two separate cases. Fachin had judged, in line with earlier decisions, that the court in Curitiba, headed by the future Minister of Justice Sergio Moro, was not legally entitled to judge the cases, since they were not immediately linked to the state-owned company Petrobras. As a result, a court in Brasilia will now decide on the two cases again, but this court can also decide to drop them.

The decision by Fachin was generally seen as being motivated by two issues. First, Fachin aimed to end investigations underway against Sergio Moro for not having been impartial in his judgements against Lula by annulling the sentences; thus, he aimed to protect Moro by absolving Lula. It was, in fact, part of his decision that the investigations against Moro would have to be stopped by virtue of the fact that the sentences against Lula were annulled, but this did not hold in the end.

Second, the embarrassment of the Supreme Court regarding Bolsonaro became so pronounced that it simply decided to overturn the sentences against Lula. Yet, later in March, the Supreme Court officially decided that Moro is to be held under suspicion of not having been impartial in judging Lula, which means that the new court in Brasilia is not able to use existing evidence from the earlier investigations and will have to gather new evidence for the cases, making it improbable that Lula will be sentenced again before the next presidential elections.

In this vein, the decision to annul the sentences against Lula and move them to a new court were as much a political decision, influenced by the conjuncture, as the earlier sentences against him. While earlier the judges wanted to get rid of the PT, they now want to be rid of Bolsonaro. The judges had decided on the same issues various times already, and the decision regarding Moro’s lack of impartiality emerged because Supreme Court judge Carmen Lucia changed her mind and overturned her earlier decision, alleging new facts that were not known to her before, for example, that Lula’s lawyers had been illegally wiretapped by prosecutors.

Lula gave a thundering speech two days after the annulment, demonstrating his ability to reach a wide audience, reiterating his claim that he was the first Brazilian president to have struck an alliance between labour and capital.

The Military, Vaccinations and 24-Hour Cemeteries

In this environment, Lira, Pacheco, and the Centrão were demanding more changes from Bolsonaro, and this time it was the removal of his Minister of Exterior, Ernesto Araújo, one of the most lunatic right-wing fanatics in the government. Most seriously, he was accused of inhibiting imports of vaccines from reaching Brazil in sufficient quantities, due to his constant attacks against China where the bulk of imports of inputs for vaccines are from.

Yet, Bolsonaro repeatedly displays the ability to turn a weak moment into a strength by going on the offensive, and he tried the same thing this time. Araújo left the post on March 29 under general pressure, and Bolsonaro used the opportunity to change five more ministers. The most significant change he undertook was the dismissal of the Minister of Defence, Fernando Azevedo e Silva, who had protected the Armed Forces against the politicization desired by Bolsonaro. The Military manages a strict protocol within its ranks to contain the spread of the Coronavirus, and this has resulted in a low death rate amongst its members. The High Command of the Army was also unhappy with Pazuello serving as Minister of Health, fearing a negative impact on the reputation of the Armed Forces. The removal of Azevedo e Silva led to the three Armed Forces commanders – of the Army, the Marines and the Air Force – offering to resign their posts jointly, in solidarity with the dismissed minister, an unprecedented occurrence. Bolsonaro subsequently dismissed all three.

These actions demonstrated the unity of the Armed Forces against any ideas of transforming it into a pet Bolsonaro can unleash to intimidate political opponents. While intended as a surprise move with the threat of a coup in the background, Bolsonaro’s action is widely seen as having intensified animosity against him in the High Command of the military.

In this way, Bolsonaro has lost the crucial support of the clientelist parties of the Centrão, the Armed Forces, and the corporate and financial elites. While popular support for his presidency is still stable at 33 per cent according to a poll conducted between March 29-31 by Poderdata, Bolsonaro’s rejection rate has increased to 59 per cent. Poderdata conducted the same poll in early February; at that time 41 per cent rejected the Bolsonaro government, while 22 per cent were neutral or indifferent, and 33 per cent supported it. This demonstrates that there is a hard core of supporters for the president despite all the crises and failures. But this might not be enough for re-election if a strong opponent emerges. Lula has not yet announced if he will run for president in 2022, but his speech after the annulment of the sentences against him was clearly presidential in tone.

In the first days of April, the number of COVID-19 infections reached a plateau of about 80,000 new cases per day, and the number of deaths is still rising, having reached a weekly average of 2700 per day. Alone in March, more than 66,000 people died of COVID-19 in Brazil. Vaccination numbers are finally picking up, with 9 per cent of the population having now received a first dose, and the new health minister promising to vaccinate 1 million people per day during April. Experts warn that a new crisis could emerge when cemeteries become overloaded, which could then cause a series of bacterial outbreaks. In the state of São Paulo, cemeteries are already conducting around-the-clock burials to avoid the possibility of new public health risks emerging. All the while, President Bolsonaro mocks television stations that report on the pandemic as “Cemetery TV.” •

Four NNMC Upward Bound students receive Davis New Mexico Scholarships

Comments Off on Four NNMC Upward Bound students receive Davis New Mexico Scholarships

Four-year scholarship supports first-generation college students

ESPAÑOLA, NM — Four Española Valley High School (EVHS) students who participate in the Northern New Mexico College Upward Bound program have been awarded Davis New Mexico Scholarships, which provide full cost-of-attendance for first-generation New Mexican students. Jessica Arevalo, Megan Manzanares, Isabella Pacheco and Clara Sotelo are among 50 scholars selected from 185 applicants.

“It’s just so huge for us, to have four of those 50 recipients come from Española, from our little high school,” said Upward Bound Director Tobe Bott-Lyons. “They’re competing with students from all over the state and from very well-known, well-regarded schools. It really says something about the quality of student that is coming out of the high school.”

The Davis New Mexico Scholarship mission is to break the generational opportunity gap in New Mexico by creating and strengthening pathways to higher education for all first-generation college-going students.

Ninety-three percent of Davis New Mexico Scholars graduate with a bachelor’s degree in four years. According to The Center for First-generation Student Success (https://firstgen.naspa.org/), the four-year graduation rate for first-generation college students averages just 27 percent. Finding students most likely to meet that goal begins with the Davis application, which NNMC’s Upward Bound students described as requiring a lot of time, motivation and determination. Applicants submit four essays, compile a list of 10 clubs or activities they participate in and secure a letter of recommendation.

The scholarship, valued at approximately $250,000, covers full cost-of-attendance, including travel, tuition, books and housing.  “That means our students earned a million dollars in scholarships just between the four of them,” said Bott-Lyon.

Davis scholars can choose between six out-of-state partner colleges with a proven track record of success with first-generation college-going students: Lawrence University, Occidental College, Southwestern University, St. Edward’s University, University of Denver or University of Portland.

All four young women were drawn to attending an out-of-state college and are taking advantage of Davis sponsored expense paid trips to tour the campuses, which helps students envision what their lives could look like in that environment. The University of Portland is at the top of Jessica Arevalo’s list, where she anticipates pursuing a degree in public health.

“I think I’m most excited to get to know a different state and a different city, because I’ve lived in New Mexico and Española my whole life,” said Jessica Arevalo. “I’m just excited about all the discoveries I’m going to make about myself and the people around me and the chance to meet new people and figure my life out.”

Clara Sotelo is leaning toward Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, which offers a pre-veterinary program that interests her. She is looking forward to “finding new horizons.”

“I’m excited about the chance to go to college, to expand my education and to better myself, learn more about myself,” Sotelo said.

Sotelo joined the Upward Bound program the summer before her sophomore year,

“I really discovered myself through Upward Bound and learned all the small aspects of myself that I didn’t know about before,” Sotelo said. “And Upward Bound has brought me to a lot of great opportunities. Apart from my scholarship, it’s overall been a very big part of my life ever since I joined.”

Isabella Pacheco is excited about being the first person in her family to go to college and get a four-year degree. She is leaning toward Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, drawn to its small campus and small class sizes. She plans to major in computer science.

Pacheco was a freshman when a friend invited her to take a look at Outward Bound.

“I needed help with homework, so I thought it was a great opportunity,” Pacheco said. “And then after that first day I loved it, so I just kept going.

“I love that there’s always help there and you’re able to get ahead. You’re able to do dual credit classes, so that’s cool. It helped me to understand how college classes are in general. And since they had clubs, I was able to be a part of my community and it also helped me discover who I am and what I want to do with my life.”

Upward Bound supported Pacheco’s interest in coding by helping her get involved in Girls Who Code, a summer coding boot camp for young women, and facilitated a student robotics club that Pacheco led.

NNMC’s Upward Bound program, funded through a five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, serves approximately 60 students a year. The intensive academic preparation program includes afterschool tutoring, Saturday Academy workshops at NNMC, a 6-week Summer Academy, field trips and college visits, leadership development and family engagement and academic counseling. The goal is college readiness for low-income and first-generation students at Española Valley High School.

“The number one thing we focus on is GPA: are they getting good grades, and can we help them get good grades and can we help them get good grades in the hardest classes they can take?” Bott-Lyons said. Dual credit courses at NNMC are a major component of that.

“It’s also helping people stay engaged in school and education and explore their interests and strengths,” Bott-Lyons added. “In terms of being ready for college, those are the big things: building your strengths and your interests and getting good grades. That’s what makes you competitive for a scholarship and getting into different kinds of colleges.”

One focus of the program is helping student build their resumes by joining clubs, pursuing an interest or engaging in community service projects.

Coaching first-generation students on the logistics of attending college, such as how to obtain transcripts and letters of recommendations, is another element. One of the most important tasks is helping students write college entrance and scholarship essays.

“The summer before our senior year we spend a lot of time brainstorming our lives and memories so we have an idea of what we want to write about in the essays, and I found that to be really helpful, not so much in giving me the ideas that I was actually going to write about, but it taught me how to think about certain things differently, and how to write about them,” Arevalo said.

This graduating class faced special challenges due to COVID-19. Instead of spending the summer between their sophomore and junior year on the NNMC campus they attended a full-time online summer program which included a dual credit course, and English bridge course, an advisory class and study labs. All the clubs met virtually as well. The grueling online schedule continued through their junior year,  including online SAT preparation.

“It was just really hard to focus and stay motivated and do all of the work.,” Arevalo said. “And it was hard to communicate as well, so if I did have an issue, I found it a lot harder to get help.”

Having a virtual junior year was especially challenging, since a major focus of that year is exploring colleges. Instead of in person college visits, all college research was done virtually.

“One of the most important things to set somebody up to be successful in college is that they find the right place to go,” Bott-Lyons said. “Going to Northern is a great option. It’s not the best option for a lot of people. Going out-of-state is a great option. It’s not a great option for a lot of students. Being able to figure out that difference while you’re in high school is a lot better than getting somewhere and realizing it’s not a workable situation for you.”

Megan Manzanares appreciates how Upward Bound prepared her to research colleges and write essays and the club and activity opportunities they provided.

“They’ve also prepared me by just giving me advice that I don’t think anyone or any teacher could give me, because they specialize in this,” Manzanares said. “They knew exactly where to put me and how to help me out with the whole college process and the application process. They just pushed me so hard and so good that I’m able to become the person that I am today. I couldn’t imagine doing it on my own.”

Manzanares is taking advantage of the Davis college tours to visit all six colleges, although she is leaning toward either the University of Portland or the University of Denver. She has a special affinity for chemistry and plans to major in a science field.

Having the highest number of Davis scholars since NNMC’s Upward Bound joined the Davis partnership attests to the perseverance of this year’s graduating class.

“Of course, I think all of our students deserve this scholarship – because they do – and this year we had a particularly amazing class,” Bott-Lyons said. “These girls are pretty amazing, so I can’t take much credit. I have an awesome job.

“But I am very proud of our program. This is our fifth year, so I feel like Northern has built a very cool thing, and I hope it lasts a very long time in the Valley.”

Soliciting Multiversity: Image’s Top 10 for May 2022

The time has come once again- time for a new slate of Image comics that is! Every year I promise myself this is the year I will read more original graphic novels. Well, this may be the year I keep my promise, there are quite a few exciting ones on the horizon. Plus more new #1 than you can shake a twig on. Let me walk you through a few new comics and see if we can’t find something you’d like.

As always, you can find the full solicits on the Image Comics website.

10. Furry Road

It’s not that the rise of Mirka Andolfo is inexplicable. I get it. She’s clearly crazy talented, and she has a strong sense of aesthetics, whether she is doing a horror story about puritan witches or a sex farce adventure starring anthropomorphic animals. And animal romance ain’t my thing. But clearly it’s a thing for lots of y’all so big news: Andolfo is coming back with her original hit series “Unnatural” in the form of a sequel series. Am I going to read the continuing adventures of Leslie the pig girl? Probably not. But you freaks have fun!

UNNATURAL: BLUE BLOOD #1 (OF 10)
WRITER / COVER A: Mirka Andolfo
ARTIST: Ivan Bigarella
MAY 11 / 32 pages / FC/ M / $3.99

UNNATURAL IS BACK! Three years after acclaimed creator MIRKA ANDOLFO’s first blockbuster, Leslie and Khal return for a thrilling new adventure!

A few years have passed since Leslie saved the world from hidden dangers and came to understand her true nature in the process. Everything seems to be working out—and not just for Leslie and her newly formed family, but for the rest of the world as well.

But appearances can be deceiving. A new threat is about to disrupt Leslie’s peaceful existence, and once again, her life will never be the same.

Don’t miss this new limited series written by MIRKA ANDOLFO, illustrated by celebrated artist IVAN BIGARELLA, and periodically featuring original artwork from MIRKA herself!

9. Wizard War I

Kurt Busiek is a living legend, and this series looks weird. It takes a certain kind of nerd to write sprawling alternate history, and Busiek is that guy. With a team of talented artists, he’s giving us his take on the Great War as fought by wizards. This is a writer who gets pacing, who gets comic book structure, who could put out great scripts in his sleep. And this is a rad premise for a series. If you haven’t checked it out yet, no one is doing world building quite like this.

ARROWSMITH: BEHIND ENEMY LINES #5 (OF 6)
WRITER: Kurt Busiek
ARTIST / COVER A: José Rafael Fonteriz, Carlos Pacheco, José Villarrubia
MAY 25 / 32 pages / FC/ T / $3.99

Fletcher and Guy find shelter (and more) within a mountain trollhome. Plus: the truth about the Peace of Charlemagne, which brought about this modern world of magic and folklore.

8. Needs a revival

In case you haven’t heard, Chip Zdarsky is the hottest shit in comics right now. His tremendous run on Daredevil is about to be complimented by a series about a little known superhero named Batman. But you’re reading the Image solicits, so you probably don’t read those lame Big Two cape books right? Then do yourself a favor and check out Chip’s creator owned work. You’ll get the bonus treat of artwork by the talented Ramón K. Pérez. If you even marginally like a spooky small town mystery, this is a great one.

STILLWATER BY ZDARSKY & PÉREZ #13
WRITER: Chip Zdarsky
ARTIST: Ramón K. Pérez, Mike Spicer
MAY 11 / 32 pages / FC/ M / $3.99

The rules have changed.

Daniel now holds a special place in Stillwater. Can Galen’s hold on the town stand up to a new challenger?

7. Swing if you want to

I spoke above about my personal disinterest in furry adventures, so allow me to recommend something about sexy humans. “Swing” is a spin-off of “Sunstone,” both are romantic melodramas about kinky couples. In the case of “Swing,” you might be able to guess, it’s about people in open relationships. You can find a torrid tale written by a tourist who couldn’t find kink in a pair of rubber gloves no problem. But “Swing” is a sex positive romance written with an understanding and respect of kink and fetish culture. Buy it for your friend who is still talking about 50 Shades of Grey.

SWING, VOL. 5 OGN TP
WRITER: Matt Hawkins
ARTIST / COVER A: Yishan Li
MAY 18 / 128 pages / FC/ M / $16.99

Dan and Cathy’s epic journey into sexual discovery comes to an end in the final volume of this arc of SWING! Outed, aging, and just trying to live their best lives, will their love overcome all? Will there be a happy ending? Heh.

6. I’m a twig girl now

Ugh, what is that… creature? Twig horrifies me. I get that he’s supposed to be kind of ugly cute, but that just makes me shudder. And obviously this is right in Skottie Young’s wheelhouse, what with the cute Muppet and the potential to make him drop some F-bombs. I’ve really enjoyed Young’s recent collaborations, so I am legitimately curious to see what he’s planning with artist Kyle Strahm. You like dark fantasy with puppets? This is probably the book for you.

TWIG #1 (OF 5)
WRITER / COVER B: Skottie Young
ARTIST / COVER A / COVER D: Kyle Strahm
COVER C: Peach Momoko
MAY 04 / 32 pages / FC/ T / $3.99

Eisner Award-winning I HATE FAIRYLAND and MIDDLEWEST writer SKOTTIE YOUNG and artist KYLE STRAHM (SPREAD, UNEARTH) come together for an all-new epic fantasy/adventure miniseries!

It’s the first day of Twig’s new job as a journeyer on a JEFF SMITH’s Bone-esque quest to save a The Dark Crystal/Labyrinth-style world. Join our hesitant hero for an inspiring and imaginative tale of hope, heartache, and determination to overcome insurmountable odds!

5. An exciting development

So many cool original graphic novels this year! If, like me, you blazed through Archive 81 on Netflix, desperate for a new season, maybe this will scratch that itch! Here we have a story about a curator of cursed objects, a horror caught on film, and a thrilling chase through NYC to get to the truth. And unlike the Netflix series, I don’t think this OGN is going to leave us on a cliffhanger.

THE DARK ROOM OGN HC
WRITER: Gerry Duggan
ARTIST / COVER A: Scott Buoncristiano, Tamra Bonvillain
JUNE 22 / 120 pages / FC/ T+ / $19.99

The hunt for a camera containing an undeveloped photo of the face of true evil threatens to wipe out New York City one chilly autumn evening. Doune Mahoney is the curator of a private collection of extremely dangerous cursed objects, and her night’s about to go to hell. Werewolves, secret societies, blessed animals, cursed objects, and more, in a fantasy horror comedy from X-Men and Deadpool writer GERRY DUGGAN, your new favorite artist SCOTT BUONCRISTIANO, and color artist extraordinaire TAMRA BONVILLAIN. Take a deep dive into THE DARK ROOM, a world the creators will be returning to for many years. Includes the first appearance of your new favorite characters, including Walt, the dancing bones of Times Square, and his blessed boom box.

4. Two truths and a lie

Department of what? I’m all about the Ministry of Lies now. “Department of Truth” has find a zillion different ways to express it’s cool, complicated premise, but I have a list of conspiratorial psi-ops I want them to cover. Top of my list is to see how the world of communist espionage managed the concept of Truth. And if the Soviets had their own reality-retconning agency, how come their government fell apart, but the USA stuck around? This comic is an infinite mystery, and I hope it never ends.

THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH #18
WRITER: James Tynion IV
ARTIST / COVER A / COVER D: Martin Simmonds
MAY 25 / 32 pages / FC/ M / $3.99

Co-creator MARTIN SIMMONDS returns for the explosive new arc of the Eisner-nominated hit! For decades, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH battled a secret war against its Soviet counterpart, THE MINISTRY OF LIES. Now Cole Turner will have to face the consequences of his predecessors as the dark actions of the past unfurl before him…

3. What grows in the bone orchard?

Hey, another Multiversity fave. Our staff and readership can’t get enough of Jeff Lemire, and his collaborations with Andrea Sorrentino are some of his most popular work. Well, here’s a brand new world from the “Gideon Falls” duo. This “Bone Orchard” graphic novel is set to be the first in a series of graphic novels. With someone as prolific as Lemire at the helm, the change in format seems very promising to me. This is a story that needed to be told a certain way, and the red hot creative team is getting a blank check to do whatever the heck they want!

BONE ORCHARD: THE PASSAGEWAY OGN HC
WRITER: Jeff Lemire
ARTIST / COVER A: Andrea Sorrentino
JUNE 15 / 96 pages / FC/ M / $17.99

From the acclaimed creative team behind GIDEON FALLS and PRIMORDIAL comes the first book in a bold and ambitious new shared horror universe! When a geologist is sent to a remote lighthouse to investigate strange phenomena, he finds a seemingly endless pit in the rocks. What lurks within—and how will he escape its pull?

THE PASSAGEWAY is the first book in the new BONE ORCHARD MYTHOS from LEMIRE & SORRENTINO! This universe will feature self-contained graphic novels and limited series about the horrors lurking within the Bone Orchard, just waiting to be discovered.

2. Brought this place to a me fight

There’s very little that excites me more than a new original comic from Kyle Starks. His absurd sense of humor may be a little juvenile, but it hits me perfectly. His last comic about Dracula learning to shoot hoops? Pretty good! Now he’s working with “Ice Cream Man” vet Artyom Topilin on a story about being stuck in your family home and facing weird monsters. Starks can shine any high concept up into a goofy romp, which is exactly what I want from “F**k This Place.”

F**K THIS PLACE #1
WRITER: Kyle Starks
ARTIST / COVER A: Artyom Topilin, Lee Loughridge
MAY 18 / 32 pages / FC/ M / $3.99

FOR FANS OF GIDEON FALLS AND HOME SICK PILOTS!

After inheriting a farm house, Trudy and Gabby are ready to start the next chapter of their lives together…except it’s already home to a mysterious force that’s attracted ghosts, aliens, and all kinds of supernatural beings for decades.

Now, Gabby and Trudy must play by the “house rules” in order to survive living among the most frightening creatures on Earth in this new series from KYLE STARKS (ASSASSIN NATION, THE SIX SIDEKICKS OF TRIGGER KEATON) and ARTYOM TOPILIN (ICE CREAM MAN PRESENTS: QUARANTINE COMIX SPECIAL).

1. How many whatnow!?

I would believe you if you told me that Charles Soule had access to a genie. How else can you explain his legal career, his gig moonlighting for both sides of the Big Two, his indie comics, and oh yeah, his work as the guy who has been basically in charge of Star Wars media for a few years now? The guy doesn’t quit. And now he is getting back together with one of his greatest artistic partners, Ryan Browne. Together, the duo made “Curse Words,” one of the best comics of either of their careers. Now they are answering a simple question: What if at exactly the same moment, everyone on earth got one genie and one wish? Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Take my money. I am in!

EIGHT BILLION GENIES #1 (OF 8)
WRITER: Charles Soule
ARTIST / COVER A: Ryan Browne
