Sun Valley standoff suspects in custody

Sky2 was over Sun Valley where SWAT vehicles moved in on two suspects, who had been involved in an earlier police pursuit, that refused to surrender for nearly an hour. Police were finally able to arrest both suspects.

Mexico a failed state where law of the jungle prevails: Jesuit universities

Two days after two elderly Jesuit priests were murdered in Chihuahua, heads of Jesuit universities slammed past and present governments for failing to combat violence in Mexico and called on citizens to pressure authorities to act.

Speaking during a panel discussion on “justice with peace and reconciliation” at the Jesuit university system’s annual meeting in León, Guanajuato, on Wednesday, one university rector described Mexico as a failed state where the law of the jungle prevails.

“When the state doesn’t have control of territory and allows private armed groups to control it, we call that a failed state,” said Juan Luis Hernández Avendaño, rector of the Ibero-American University in Torreón, Coahuila.

Due to the absence of the state, many neighborhoods and towns across Mexico have been controlled by big and small criminal groups for years, he said.

“In many parts of Mexico, [authorities] left a long time ago, so the people are alone, abandoned, subjected to the law of the strongest, subjected to the law of the jungle, the law of kidnapping, extortion and murder because federal and local governments aren’t interested in protecting us,” Hernández said.

The removal of the bodies of the two slain priests from the church where they were killed is a sign that “narcos can do whatever they want,” he added. “They feel they are the owners [of Mexico], and we can’t continue allowing that.”

Mario Patrón, rector of the Ibero-American University in Puebla, charged that eight of nine violence-prevention and peace-building measures included in a national peace plan presented by Andrés Manuel López Obrador when he was president-elect have not been fully implemented.

“Eight measures were watered down, and only the National Guard was left,” he said. “A militarized police force … [is] the only measure to pacify the country. Today, we have to say that strategy failed.”

Alexander Paul Zatyrka Pacheco, rector of the Jesuit University of Guadalajara (ITESO), accused governments at different levels of blaming each other for the high levels of violence that continue to plague Mexico while failing to address the problem. “It’s clear that these political collectives won’t act if there isn’t pressure from civil society,” he said.

The director of México state’s Chalco Valley Technological University took aim at the federal government’s so-called abrazos, no balazos (hugs, not bullets) security approach, a non-confrontational strategy that purports to address the root causes of violence through the delivery of social programs. The government is trying to achieve peace simply by transferring money to people, Óscar Castro said. But those transfers are no match for the pressure criminal groups exert on people who live in the areas they control, he said.

Cartels can lure young people with salaries that far exceed payments the government makes to students with scholarships or participants in social programs such as the Youth Building the Future apprenticeship scheme.

All of the university leaders who participated in the panel discussion lamented the deaths of Joaquín César Mora Salazar and Javier Campos Morales, veteran priests who were gunned down in a church in the Tarahumara region of Chihuahua on Monday. A tourist guide was also killed in the attack, which was allegedly perpetrated by a drug gang member known as El Chueco (The Crooked One).

Luis Alfonso González, rector of the Ibero-American University in León, said the murders occurred within a “framework of exacerbated violence that harms … our society daily and reveals the ineffectiveness of the state security policy at all levels.”

Ensemble Espanol’s Dazzling Dance Feast

Because of its power, there must be an untold or unknown story behind flamenco. Rarely do you get a satisfying explanation on the true source of its passion. Or why there’s such an undercurrent of defiance running so freely through it.  Let’s not even go into how proud it reads.  A pride that bleeds right into magnificence.  In the end, all of those things recede to the background because it’s flamenco’s beauty that seals the deal. Over its three-day appearance at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts that began last Friday, Ensemble Espanõl splendidly revealed the full force of this highly unique art form to appreciative Chicago audiences.

Flamenco Passion, the concert finale of the dance company’s 2022 arts festival, overflowed with spectacular dance and unforgettable music.  A deep program consuming nearly three hours, it took an unhurried approach to display the range of a dance form that feels as if it reaches back to antiquity.  Said to have only originated a little more than 200 years ago in southern Spain, those projections might be considered shallow if they don’t delve into flamenco’s gypsy origins.  It’s the essence of those origins that electrified the Flamenco Passion program.

Drama, romance and suspense dominate flamenco.  Each of those things is heightened when you fold in bold costuming, fearless choreography and astute production elements.  With those ingredients, every segment, whether dance or music centered, became its own memorable story.

L-R-Jose-Moreno, Diego (El Negro) Alvarez, Paco Fonta, and Curro de Maria in La Resonancia del Alma by Jose Moreno – Photo by Dean Paul

Pace, variety and quality also distinguished the concert.   In residence at Northeastern Illinois University, Ensemble Espanol’s impressive artistry was presented in an assortment of dance formats.  Some focused more on traditional choreography while other dances suggested hints of more contemporary influences.  Key components, like flawless timing and precision, remained constants throughout them all.  Not only was the footwork impeccable, but every nod of the head and gesture of the hand displayed an enviable level of synchronization within the company.  It’s that captivating synergy that defined the entire performance.

The solo dances, where the emotive side of flamenco took the forefront, held their own special delights.  The dances became personal when Elisabet Torras, Jorge Moreno and La Lupi took the stage.  La Lupi was the first to appear in Juanaca .  A born performer, she used this world premiere to reveal a side of flamenco many might find unfamiliar.  It appears more spontaneous, but it’s choreography stays grounded in a specific response to music.  Accompanied on stage by three instrumentalists and a vocalist, she dances as if she were on an exhilarating mission.  One that encourages her to react viscerally to the stimulus of music.  A raw, pure quality to her movements brimmed with vitality and dance virtuosity.

Dressed in red with a long heavy train trailing her gown, one of flamenco’s more esoteric components is to master the train.  It too is an art form; one that demands an exemplary ability to match step or tap to rhythm while regulating one’s wardrobe.  Completely unrushed, orchestrating the dance’s momentum as it rose and fell and rose again, she tamed the train and thrilled the audience with seasoned poise.

Mr. Moreno, in his own world premiere of La Resonancia del Alma (Resonance of the Soul) was no less transfixing.  Dancing to his own choreography, he epitomized uncommon prowess, power and masculine grace.  Also accompanied by the concert’s musicians and singer Paco Fonta, Moreno’s performance proved spellbinding.  Arrestingly intimate, the conversation created between the heels of his boots and the instruments became a beautiful dialect of its own.  Blanketed with Fonta’s exquisite and haunting vocals, La Resonancia del Alma became a complete world that the audience sank into with relish.

Like pinpoint synchronization, pose and silhouette are hallmarks of flamenco.  Reminiscent of ballet’s pas de deux (dance for two) that often build to a display feats of dance excellence, Ensemble Espanol featured a similar dance for four.  Contest and romance were tightly woven together to highlight the complementary beauty of tension and tenderness.  Exaggerated to heighten the dance’s dramatic impact, Dame Libby Komaiko’s choreography in Danza del Fuego/Dance of Fire still gleams twenty-five years after it was created.

Like so much of the concert’s structure, and the dances and music within it, Ensemble Espanõl’s arts extravaganza seemed to suspend time to magnificently showcase cultural excellence.  An excellence that was only enhanced by Dustin Derry’s astonishing production design.

Weekend of Violence Kicks Off as Rioters Assault Pro-Life Woman, Hurl Explosive Behind Police Lines

It didn’t take long for the crowd that demands women have the right to kill their unborn children to begin violence against those living outside the womb once Roe v. Wade was overturned.

In the wake of Friday’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health — which struck down the left’s invented right to an abortion — violent protests broke out in various corners of the country, many caught on video and posted to social media.

The chaotic protests were the culmination of decades of the left’s radical rhetoric boiling over — and were a bleak augury for what may happen in the days and weeks to come.

Advertisement – story continues below

(Here at The Western Journal, we’ve documented how the left’s rhetoric has ratcheted up the temperature on the abortion issue, threatening Americans that there would be blood if the Supreme Court doesn’t continue to act as a rubber-stamp legislature for the left’s agenda. We’ll keep bringing America the truth about who’s responsible for this divisiveness when the mainstream media won’t. You can help by subscribing.)

According to The Daily Wire, protests were scene in cities like Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington.

“Some protests became heated as a fight reportedly broke out at the Rhode Island State House where a counter-protester appeared to be beaten up by one of the protesters while protesters in Phoenix, Arizona, reportedly breached the state’s Capitol building,” The Daily Wire reported.

“There was also video of a truck driving through a group of protesters trying to stop the vehicle in Iowa.”

In Seattle, video posted by independent journalist Andy Ngô showed what he identified as antifa members harassing and attacking pro-life protesters.

WARNING: The following videos contain graphic language and violence that some viewers will find offensive.

After the pepper spray malfunctioned, Ngô reported that the young woman was assaulted by members of the antifa group.

Meanwhile, video out of Los Angeles showed rioters throwing fireworks at police. “Chicanx” activist journalist Josh Pacheco thought this was a good thing, posting an emoji of fireworks along with the footage of the explosion behind police lines.

Turning Point USA’s Benny Johnson didn’t agree with this assessment, calling the protesters “terrorists.”

They’re throwing fireworks at police in LA.

These are not “protesters”

In Washington, meanwhile, protesters could be seen trying to push past police on the sidewalks on the way to the Supreme Court, chanting, “Get your laws / off my body!” and “Whose streets? Our streets!”

It isn’t as if we haven’t been primed for this, however — first by years of rhetoric about what the left would do if Roe were overturned, then after the unprecedented leak of the draft opinion in the case on May 2.

The unprecedented leak of that draft opinion alone was a sign of how ugly it would get.

One radical pro-abortion group, Ruth Sent Us, published a list of the addresses of Republican-appointed Supreme Court justices and urged individuals to protest outside them. Several weeks later, a California man was arrested and charged with attempted murder near the house of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, having allegedly conspired to assassinate him.

Another radical pro-abortion group, Jane’s Revenge, has claimed responsibility for several fire-bombings of pro-life pregnancy crisis centers. Last week, according to the New York Post, the group published a letter declaring “open season” on the centers.

“We were unsurprised to see thirty days come and thirty days pass with no sign of consilience or even bare-minimum self-reflection from you,” the June 14 letter read. “History may not repeat itself, but it certainly rhymes, and we’ve already seen such stanzas where medical autonomy is stripped away, humanity is increasingly criminalized, and merely surviving becomes largely untenable.”

To the extent heads or tails could be made of turgid, confused language of the letter, it was this: Take away the invented constitutional right to kill babies and we’ll kill you, instead.

No one may be dead yet, but this strategy certainly seems to be off to a ringing start.
