My Untold Manito Trail Story

TAOS, NM — Eyes from the past peered back at me through photographs, deep-set gazes in the portraits of couples facing the camera, lives captured in time. Pictures, names, birthplaces, and family lineages were set adjacent to each other on rectangular fabric banners, capturing the legacy of Manito families with deep New Mexico origins.

Levi Romero, author, poet, and fellow native Nuevomexicano, describes the word Manito as “a derivative of the word hermanito, a term of endearment,” and an identity first applied by Mexican immigrants to reference “New Mexican Hispanics.” In his book Querencia: Reflections on the New Mexico Homeland (University of New Mexico Press, 2020), Romero describes his own contemplations on the Manito diaspora when a friend of his mentioned the New Mexican Manito experience as one “much farther from their native homeland.” Expanded from Romero’s article in the mentioned book, this concept is further explored and deepened through the visuals displayed in Following the Manito Trail, on view through July 31 at the Millicent Rogers Museum. The show asks what it means (and looks like) to sustain and nurture a culture and identity even while that culture is far removed from its ethnic homeland.

A main feature of the exhibition is large banners that include the following familias: Arguello, Perea, Quinto, Sanchez, Sandoval, Soto, Torres, Valdez, and Villa. The banners offer a short but descriptive narrative, a graphic representation of the genealogy family tree, and photographs, all in an attempt to capture, delineate, define how the “Manito experience” is captured within family.

Following the Manito Trail is also part of the larger Manitos Community Memory Project, which has a mission to not only further expand the Manito discussion but to “serve as a space for people from these rural communities … to reconnect, recollect, record, and reflect on their shared cultural heritage.”

The exhibition itself, complete with visuals and artifacts, “is a cultural heritage exhibition that shares the migration experiences, creative practices, and largely untold stories of the Manitos,” states the museum website. “These families carried their culture with them through their migrations to other states for seasonal and permanent work during the 19th and 20th centuries.”

My maternal grandfather, Leonard Martinez, was a Manito; born in 1912 in Llano Largo near Peñasco, New Mexico, the son of Maximillano and Victoriana. He grew up within the Indo-Hispanic cultural and physical landscape of Northern New Mexico but wandered further up north in search of work and ended up settling in Rawlins, Wyoming, where he met and married my grandmother Catalina (Catherine) Lopez, who was of Mexican descent. The familia settled there, staying until Leonard’s only daughter, Anna Lee, moved back to the homeland of New Mexico. This is where my own story begins, a granddaughter raised in New Mexico with her own growing querencia.

Accompanying each of the exhibition’s banners were also objects such as a family rifle complete with canvas case, a Spanish colonial traveling trunk, a 19th-century kettle of iron and wood, and a colcha with wool on wool embroidery and natural dyes. While these objects were visually stunning and spoke to the past, only one was an object from the Manito familias featured in the exhibition.

Two objects specific to Following the Manito Trail spoke to me: a rifle and its tan canvas case. A weapon, used perhaps to hunt or used perhaps to protect, and the canvas case, which houses or protects this legacy of both violence and beautiful complexity of our tierra.

I speak for myself when I say that I didn’t have time to mail in or even hand-deliver the item I had from my own grandfather to include in the exhibition. “Qué pasó?” I asked myself. Why weren’t there more actual objects from the featured familias? Were we not given enough time or instruction? Or deeper, was it that familias like my own are more prone to keep things to themselves, to not make a display of our own lineage and cultura?

Along with the banners, four “topic” panels define and explain the concepts of Familia, Querencia, Being Manito, and Migration as Survival. Moving through the exhibition, two sitting stations were available to watch videos, one of which was a digital “cuento” as told by Tranquilina Pacheco (a short five-minute video, complete with voice-interview, photographs, and artwork, with an acoustic guitar accompaniment playing in the background). A large video monitor, placed front and center, displayed various photos, families and lives lived.

Strolling through the Millicent Rogers Museum, seeing my own family name displayed there as part of the exhibition was complex and strange, to say the least. Should I be honored and excited? Sentimental? Should I focus on just the history, the facts, the lovely graphics of each banner with their soft-colored outlines and carefully crafted design? Or should I resist this space? Aren’t museums sometimes exploitative, colonizing spaces that manipulate history to fit mainstream narratives?

Instantly I thought of what my own Papacito (my grandfather Leonard) might say about this exhibition. Would he even be at all honored or impressed by his family name displayed in a museum in Taos? No sé. And because I don’t know, my questions linger, spiral, and then fold in on themselves, speckling my alma with a smattering of something not deep as regret but as colorless as undeniable questioning.

What does it mean to belong to a community? And what does it mean to build community, and to reconnect when your familia has been displaced from its deep origins? I asked myself these questions as I meandered through the rest of the museum.

Adjacent rooms within the museum proudly displayed their collections: Native American and Hispanic jewelry, pottery, and other religious artwork, each with captions stating dates, locations, and origins. The lighting in each room and display was soft, inviting. A bowl created at Santa Clara Pueblo. A retablo depicting San Juan and San Isidro.

Moving through the museum (my first time ever visiting, despite having been to and passed through Taos hundreds of times), I was amazed by the breadth of the expansive collection even as I was rattled with doubts in my own heart. When a museum volunteer kindly informed me one of the rooms within the museum had been an actual morada (a meetinghouse or chapel of New Mexico Penitentes), my face became hot. For a moment, all I wanted to do was run outside and just sit, crumbled and still, in clear view of Taos mountain — one of the sacred peaks of the Sangre de Christo mountain range — unmistakable from any window inside the museum.

My own Nuevomexicano identity cannot be — is not — defined by museum artifacts nor interpretations. Instead, it begins in actual place, in landscape, and from there extends out to familia (who’s your primos, who’s your Nana or Abuelita or Tío), and then equally to traditions (language, food, religious traditions, and even music). Similarly, while the museum’s exhibition can clearly not solely define the Manito Trail, it at least opens an ever-widening exploration and documentation of the experiences.

City Council awards Casper’s last open bar and grill liquor license to La Cocina

CASPER, Wyo. — The Casper City Council voted 7–0 on Tuesday, June 21 in favor of granting a bar and grill liquor license to La Cocina Mexican Restaurant. Councilmember Bruce Knell was absent and Councilmember Amber Pollock abstained from the vote.

With the City Council’s approval of the liquor license request, La Cocina plans to move forward with construction of the restaurant’s new home at “The Compass,” 4110 Centennial Hills Blvd. Construction of the new restaurant is expected to begin in late July and be completed in May 2023, Martin Axlund with True Land & Realty, the company that owns The Compass, said Tuesday.

The liquor license will be used at La Cocina’s new restaurant once the move happens. Until then, the restaurant will continue operating without a bar and grill license at its exiting 321 East E St. location.

The license La Cocina will get control of was the city’s last available bar and grill license, City Manager Carter Napier noted. The number of available licenses is based on a population formula under state law.

Jim and Andrea Childs, owners of La Cocina, told the City Council on Tuesday that many of their employees are already “TIPS” trained, a certification people are required to obtain in order to serve alcohol in Casper. Jim added that he was previously a certified TIPS teacher and Andrea said the couple is considering becoming certified as TIPS teachers to help ensure the restaurant’s staff is trained.

Multiple people spoke in favor of the City Council granting the liquor license to La Cocina ahead of the vote on Tuesday. Jack Lenhart said he has known the Childs family for years and noted the restaurant has provided Thanksgiving dinners to people in the past.

Greg Dixon, president and CEO of Hilltop Bank, which is affiliated with True Land & Realty, said he is excited La Cocina will join The Compass as neighbors, with the bank operating a branch at the development.

“Local businesses, no national tenants, I love it,” Dixon said of the direction for The Compass.

Rep. Pat Sweeney (House District 58) encouraged the City Council to approve the liquor license request, saying he thinks the business move makes sense for La Cocina.

After residents spoke, Vice Mayor Steve Freel said it is rare to hear from so many people when a liquor license request comes before the City Council. Freel said he thought that that spoke well of the Childs and the restaurant.

Mayor Ray Pacheco said he thought Dixon’s points about The Compass being filled entirely with locally owned businesses was an important thing to note.

Bar and grill liquor licenses require business to have a physical bar with at least eight seats and a serving station. At least one bartender is required and the business must offer at least six “major distilled spirits” for sale. There is also a requirement that businesses with a bar and grill license see at least 60% of gross sales come from food service, with no more than 40% of gross sales coming from the sale of alcohol. Bar and grill licenses cost $10,500 for the first year, with $3,000 annual renewal costs.

A memo from city staff explaining the liquor license request and La Cocina’s application can be reviewed below:

SINCERA FLOR
(Compositor: Morais Neto)

Sonhei
Que eu era um beija-flor
E que procurava a mais bela cor
A sincera flor o melhor perfume
Que cheirasse amor.

Andei pelos campos de um lado para o outro
Perguntei estrelas como era seu rosto
Mas não achei, eu não encontrei
A florzinha mais bela
A flor mais sincera
Pra quem me guardei.

Refrão
Vou pedir pro vento,
Que mande notícias minhas pro cê
Quem sabe um dia a gente se vê
Mas sei, é questão de tempo
Pois no pensamento você já está
Se faz presente e quer ficar.

Para sentir o doce do beijo
Calor do meu toque
Puro desejo de quem quer amar
De quem quer amar.

NATO’s summit 2022 in Madrid: 5 things to know | NATO News | Al Jazeera

Leaders of the world’s largest defence alliance will convene in Madrid this week for the NATO 2022 summit.

The high-stakes meeting from June 28 to 30 comes at a time of heightened global tension amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Here are five things you should know about the summit that security analysts say could affect the defence and security priorities of countries not only in the West, but also around the world.

What’s happening and why is it important

At last year’s NATO summit in Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted that the alliance’s relationship with Russia was at its “lowest point since the end of the Cold War”.

His words became reality when Russia invaded Ukraine in February, further worsening relations between NATO and the Kremlin.

Harry Nedelcu, head of policy at Rasmussen Global and in charge of its Free Ukraine task force, told Al Jazeera that the summit will likely see NATO agreeing to beef up its presence on its eastern flank.

“An enhanced forward presence with rotational battalions in Poland and the Baltic states was already agreed at the Warsaw summit [in 2016]. The Madrid summit will see allies agreeing to a more enhanced and perhaps even more permanent presence in the east,” he said.

Stoltenberg told reporters on Monday that NATO was planning to “increase the number of our high readiness forces to well over 300,000”.

Elisabeth Braw, senior foreign policy and defence fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, said NATO has shown great unity since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and it must continue.

“But that display of unity hasn’t been easy because different member states of the alliance have very different geographical locations and different perceptions of the world,” Braw told Al Jazeera.

“Right now, if they start bickering or disagreeing about what to do to help Ukraine, that would be a major setback and a sign of weakness that NATO’s rivals would exploit.”

NATO membership for Sweden and Finland was expected to be swift. Does that still stand?

The icing on the cake of this year’s summit will be Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership bid, according to Braw.

In May, both counties let go of decades of military neutrality and announced that joining the alliance would be a step in the right direction amid the new geopolitical realities in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

But the accession process has stalled after Turkey accused the Nordic neighbours of providing a safe haven for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is listed as a “terrorist” group by Turkey and its allies.

During a recent visit to Sweden, Stoltenberg told reporters that NATO was working hard to resolve Turkey’s concerns “as soon as possible”.

“That’s extremely unlikely to happen because Turkey is still opposed to it and so it’s unlikely that Sweden, Finland will be invited into the alliance at the time for the summit,” Braw told Al Jazeera.

“Turkey doesn’t mind playing the role of spoilsport. But what is clear is that Turkey has had real national security concerns regarding the Kurds. That is where Sweden wants to make concessions in particular,” she said.

Will Ukraine ever join NATO?

The Kremlin has long been critical of NATO’s enlargement in eastern Europe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s security demands to NATO included ruling out Ukraine’s membership of the military alliance.

Addressing a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force in March, where some NATO countries convene to discuss solutions to respond to crises, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy said he understood that Ukraine could no longer become a member of NATO.

“For years we heard about the apparently open door, but have already also heard that we will not enter there, and these are truths and must be acknowledged,” he said.

According to Braw, in the foreseeable future and under current circumstances, Ukraine’s ambition to join the European Union was more likely than NATO membership.

“That is a very important goal for them to reach and a goal that is likely but will involve lots of work,” she said.

For Nedelcu, “the biggest and the most powerful way to make Ukraine secure” was to ensure the country was so strong militarily and had a powerful defence industry that it “would become a porcupine impossible to attack”.

Beefing up defence expenditure

One of the biggest debates amid NATO allies is how much each country spends on defence.

In 2006, members of the alliance pledged that every NATO country would dedicate 2 percent of its gross domestic product to defence. But there has been division between members regarding who spends the most on defence.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has magnified the scope of this spending debate.

Nedelcu said that that more and more NATO members are reaching the 2 percent threshold.

“We’ve seen countries like Germany really increase their defence expenditure after the war. So, at the Summit, there will definitely be an emphasis on continuing that trend and seeing allies get serious on beefing up their defence expenditures,” he said.

China on the agenda?

At the NATO summit last year, Stoltenberg highlighted that “China was coming closer to the alliance” and said that it was important for NATO to develop a clear and united position towards Beijing.

With China’s continued obfuscation on the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine and threats against Taiwan and other countries in the Indo-Pacific region, Nedelcu thinks Stoltenberg’s plea regarding a position on China will be magnified in Madrid, and that it is important to watch for strong language on China at the summit.

“There will be discussions among the alliance’s members regarding China as a strategic competitor. This will also beg the question: what role will NATO seek when it comes to Indo-Pacific security, and how will NATO seek to have a say on security in the Indo-Pacific or the Taiwan Strait as this is increasingly… linked to North Atlantic security,” Nedelcu told Al Jazeera.

With countries such as Japan and South Korea also scheduled to attend the summit, Nedelcu said, the world is becoming more polarised between autocracies and like-minded democracies.

Ramon Pacheco Pardo, professor of international relations and regional envoy for East and Southeast Asia at King’s College London, told Al Jazeera that with the presence of Japan and South Korea, there could be statements regarding North Korea at the summit.

“That matters for South Korea because it can show that there are other countries in Europe and the US that also see North Korea as a threat,” he said.

“And this can lead to practical cooperation, especially on cyber and information sharing, because that’s what NATO is strongest at, when it comes to the Asia-Pacific region.”

Trump Coup Nightmare: See The Moment Fox News Turns Amidst ‘Devastating’ Smoking Gun

The devastating evidence presented against Donald Trump in the latest Jan. 6 hearing shows Trump supported the armed overthrow of the U.S. government. Now, the incriminating eye-witness testimony is prompting some Trump veterans and conservatives to turn on the former president, including Trump’s former Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and Fox News favorite Andrew McCarthy, a conservative former prosecutor who previously wrote a book defending Trump. MSNBC’s Chief Legal Correspondent Ari Melber breaks down the significance of these concessions.
