The AME Church Continues to Thrive in the Dominican Republic

The AME Church Continues to Thrive in the Dominican Republic

By Presiding Elder Abraham Rodriguez Jones, 16th Episcopal District

The African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Dominican Republic held its 95th Annual Conference section, at Bethel AME Church, Samana. Which was presided over by the Bishop of the 16th Episcopal District Marvin Zanders and the Supervisor Winifred Zanders. After two years, without holding a face-to-face conference due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to successfully hold it from February 9-12, 2023.

Among the most significant events that we can highlight are:

The pastoral ministry was strengthened with the Annual Sermon preached by the Conference secretary, Rev. Margarito Rodriguez. His text was taken from 1 Kings 18: 42-44 with the theme: “When we see nothing” in whose sermon he stood out the importance of talking to God as Elijah did instead of having a banquet as Ahab did, so that when times of drought come, we can follow the line of the prophet, in obedience.

Certainly, we were edified, and it is remarkable the extraordinary quality of the teaching that the bishop brought on how to make the church grow and how to keep the people who come. In the same way, he gave us the key to prosper by paying our tithes and offerings. Our Bishop Zanders emphasized that when we pay our tithes and give our offerings we are blessed.

Despite the challenges, for our Annual Dominican Conference, it is a celebration to have admitted four (4) candidates to the ministry on trial. Not only that, but five (5) itinerant deacons were also ordained:

Rev. Yoanlis Esther Jones, Bachelor of Accounting

Rev. Abraham Rodriguez Pacheco, Bachelor of Accounting & Master of Theology

Rev. Wilfredo Paulino Esteban, Bachelor of Psychology

Rev. Alexandro Azor, Bachelor of Education

Rev. Ana Doris King Matinés Law Degree

In addition, four (4) itinerant elders were ordained:

Rev. Enercida Rodriguez Pacheco, Bachelor of Theology; Certified as an English-Spanish Translator

Rev. Benita Martines Bachelor of Education

Revda. Evelin Medina, Bachelor of Education

Revda. Mercedes Farington

And we are very pleased that all of persons ordained itinerant elders are women.

In addition, the 95th Session of the Dominican Annual Conference was the most attended with a quorum of 99% of the conference members from the first day, a session in which all the churches presented their reports and we had a large number of observers attending to support their churches. So many people were there, that the auditorium was not enough to bring them all together.

I believe that this 95 Session of the Dominican Annual Conference marked a before and after in the history of the AME Church in the Dominican Republic with the added distinction that that four of the ordained elders are children of pastors of our beloved AME Connnection.

For me, Abraham Rodríguez Jones, this being my twenty-first (21) report as Presiding Elder, it is an honor to know that two of those ordained are my biological children. It is satisfying to know that the pastoral legacy of my family in the AME Church is still standing and this being the first time that it has been recorded in the Dominican Republic, it must be reflected in the memories and lives, especially of those who read this article. So, if you are someone wondering: What will happen to my legacy? Or, who will continue the hard work of expanding the kingdom of God on earth? Know this: It requires persistence, perseverance, and dedication. Getting my children ordained at the Conference has been a struggle, but true warriors do not stop in the face of adversity but rather fight hard because resistance is gained by making resistance. So, hold on! His legacy will continue.

I don’t know when something like this will happen again, but today, the AME Church in the Dominican Republic rejoices in handing over and passing the relay baton to the next generation of men and women born and raised in our brilliant church. For me, it represents personally it represents a fourth generation of pastors who uphold the name of Jesus Christ, and the historical legacy of Bishop Richard Allen.

Presiding Elder Abraham Rodriguez Jones is the Presiding Elder of the South District of the Dominican Annual Conference and pastor of Impacto de Vida AME Church in La Romana, Dominican Republic.

Letter: Youth support robotics and the environment

Enlightening how certain events, photos or occurrences can influence our thinking.

The Free Lance (April21) front page demonstrated how Hollister High students engage with the robotics program to learn the mechanics of robots. This reminded me how much the same happened to my son who struggled to finish high school until he discovered the computer; this was occurring back at the birth of the internet. He sprinted from struggle to honors because computer language made sense to him.

If robotics encourages a student to learn electronics plus physics and math there is no telling what a student can accomplish.

On the other hand, robotics can have a down side as portrayed with a chuckle the Joe Heller cartoon robot singing, “Anything you can do I can do better,” to the young job applicant. Along those lines, I hope the high school will be able to initiate a program to work on an important project like desalinating sea water which is undoable by the robot. Nothing would be more valuable than an abundant source of fresh water. I believe the current process is one of distillation. The problem is that high energy heat to distill uses energy in much the same as that which produces electricity burning fossil fuels.

Another interest capturing our young is that of our California indigenous or Amah Mutsun Tribe with the local environmental group. Find the youth in the front page Free Lance of April 28; a wider lens would capture more.

This matter concerns a lawsuit brought by the Amah Mutsun indigenous Indian tribe against San Benito County. The judge combined two lawsuits of which the other is one brought by the environmental group against the county. Both concern the development at Betabel Road ignoring proper environmental impacts

The land where the Pacheco Creek meets the Pajaro River at Betabel is sacred ancestral land for the Amahs, and for the environmentalists is rich wildlife habitat teeming with abundant flora and fauna playing a vital role in maintaining clean air and water.

Although the Betabel Road project was rejected in 2020 according to the results of Measure K, the Betabel owners and developers never accepted defeat and tried again in 2022—running as Measure Q where this time the growth measure won.

The lesson seems clear: both sides never give up! That is exactly what the Amahs and the environmentalists along with their young allies plan: never give up, continue dedication and never stop.

Betabel owners see high stakes: develop the land, ignore climate change, make profit.

Our young people see high stakes: loss of wildlife, unhealthy air, toxic water, forest fires, floods, uncertain jobs and basic uncomfortable and difficult living.

Supporting our young seems to be the most logical behavior.

Understanding the Basics

Pacheco’s—a company that started with humble beginnings—made it their mission to offer the best possible products to their customers. In the highly competitive world of ecommerce, they recognized that to stand out among their competitors, they needed to provide an unparalleled shopping experience that went beyond just selling products.

Importance of Product Optimization

Product optimization, also known as product management, plays a crucial role in an ecommerce business’s success. It is the process of continuously analyzing and refining a product’s listing and presentation to enhance its visibility, attractiveness, and ultimately, its conversion rate. The goal is to attract more customers and generate higher sales, ultimately leading to increased revenue. Pacheco’s team implemented these optimizations, allowing them to make their way to the top of the ecommerce realms.

Key Strategies

Product optimization is not a one-time process; it requires a strategic approach that includes multiple tactics. In this section, we discuss the key strategies that Pacheco’s adopted to succeed in their product optimization journey.

Product Listing Enhancement

One of the foremost transformations Pacheco’s made was refining their product listings. They focused on providing detailed and accurate descriptions, high-quality images, and easy-to-understand titles, all of which significantly contributed to making their listings more user friendly and efficient.

Emphasizing UX/UI

Pacheco’s understood the importance of excellent user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, which in turn elevated their customers’ shopping experience. Their website was transformed into an easy-to-navigate, visually appealing, and interactive platform that catered to their diverse customer base.

A/B Testing

To ensure that their changes were effective, Pacheco’s deployed regular A/B testing, comparing different versions of their product pages to determine which modifications produced the best results. Constant testing and optimization ensured they drafted best practices that suited their products and customers.

Tactical Approach

For long-term success, an organized tactical approach is essential. The following are some of the standout tactics that Pacheco’s implemented across their product optimization efforts.

Competitor Analysis

By regularly scrutinizing their competitors’ strategies, Pacheco’s stayed aware of industry trends and customer preferences. This helped them remain innovative and maintain a competitive edge in the dynamic ecommerce landscape.

Utilizing Customer Feedback

Pacheco’s utilized customer feedback to make informed decisions and adjust their optimization strategies accordingly. They valued their customers’ voices and consistently incorporated suggestions, helping them deliver products that catered to their target audience’s specific needs and preferences.

Monitoring Key Metrics

Setting measurable performance indicators and tracking them regularly led to a data-driven approach to optimization. Pacheco’s monitored metrics such as conversion rates, bounce rates, and site dwell time, significantly improving their product optimization process.

Another vegetable has been rationed by supermarkets after a cold snap in Europe led to a shortage.

Some UK supermarkets have run out of peppers entirely, and most major supermarkets have imposed limits on how many customers are allowed to buy.

Unseasonably cold weather in Spain slowed down the growing of peppers, leading to Morrisons limiting purchases to two per customer.

The supermarket said it was hoping to lift the cap in the next week or so because supplies were improving.

Waitrose has also been hit by supply problems. It said it was working hard with suppliers to get a full range back on shelves and expected stock levels to stabilise in the coming weeks as the UK moved into its growing season.

British supermarkets source peppers exclusively from Spain during the winter months.Supermarkets were forced to ration a range of fruit and vegetables earlier this year due to poor weather in Europe and Africa leading to shortages.

Shoppers started seeing shortages of tomatoes on about 20 February, with retailers saying a combination of bad weather and related transport issues in north Africa and Europe were causing significant supply problems.

The shortages spread to other products, leaving shelves bare of fresh produce items including cucumbers, peppers and lettuce.

Tesco, Aldi and Lidl limited purchases of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers to three items per person, while Morrisons set a limit of two per customer on tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers.

Production problems in Morocco began in January with unusually cold night temperatures affecting tomato ripening.

Supplies from Britain’s other major winter source, Spain, were also badly affected by weather. At the time, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) said shortages of some fruit and vegetables in UK supermarkets could be “the tip of the iceberg”.

Deputy president Tom Bradshaw said a reliance on imports had left the UK vulnerable to “shock weather events”.

Waking Life in Cratos, Portugal announce their full festival program

A well-renowned cultural gathering, spanning nearly a week, Portuguese music festival Waking Life brings a wealth of interdisciplinary artists, musicians and like-minded individuals to the scenic Crato, in Northern Alentejo, for a marathon provision as the music runs continuously until Monday 12th of June. In tandem with the stacked musical offerings, a program of artworks, installations, performances, screenings, countercultural workshops and immersive experiences will be held across the festival site. This 6-day combination of music and art allows for a genuine escape from the banality everyday life can present and alludes to a utopia, realising a society with the arts beating at its heart and music flowing through its veins, breathing culture and connection with each breath. Waking Life also has community and work building at its very core and when not throwing one of the best festivals in Europe they are, “engaged in a large rewilding and land regeneration project around the lake. By working with the local community and municipality to transform the Barragem das Nascentes into a public park rich in biodiversity, we are building ecological resilience and reshaping endemic ecosystems that will regenerate 30 hectares of land over the next 10 years.”

With the full line up already released we have decided to cover select artists who have caught our eye. Boasting an extensive curation of live acts, Waking Life will be teeming with energy, a world premiere of Terrence Dixon and Jordan CGZ’s new live performance is definitely worth noting. The Motor-City techno legend joins Jordan Czamanski aka Jordan CGZ following a stream of successful collaboration since the pair were introduced in Europe back in 2019, the latter have cut his collaborative teeth through his part of both ‘Juju & Jordash” and “Magic Mountain High” alongside Move D.

Samuel Rohrer performs his enchanting live show, where intrinsic live drumming is met with a plethora of intriguing and extravagant synthesis forming a unique and impressively creative output, not entirely dissimilar to what can be heard in his collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos and the like. The dizzying array of live acts will also hear sets from classic performers such as Lawrence, Steevio, Losoul, Kassem Mosse, Tobias, Jan Jelinek and Melchior Productions as well as sets from DMX Krew and 100hz.

Maayan Nidam, who aside from her DJ set at Waking Life, will also be showcasing her A/V show as part of her performance as The Waves, a different project from the Perlon star and Berlin mainstay, executed with her usual grace, class and expertise.

In terms of DJs, a diverse yet carefully curated selection awaits and covers bases on all fronts. With Amir Alexander, Daphni, Darwin, Virginia, Steffi, Molly and Fred P, bringing all sorts of house-tinged flavours, with Walrus, The Lot Radio’s Can you jigit hosts O.bee & Tomas Station and BBC Radio 6 favourite Gilles Peterson catering to more eclectic tastes. Arpiar label bosses Petre Inspirescu and Rhadoo will be bringing the afterhours delicacies alongside Margaret Dygas, Magda and Eli Verveine who will be keeping the dancefloor rocking all around the clock. We are happy to see G76 has also been added to the line up, a DJ and producer who was been carving out his path with knock-kneed, experimental, minimal productions and selections that carry something different. Dark and driving grooves combine with elements of Sci-Fi soundtracks and classic house motifs, combining to create infectious, sometimes introspective, music that bends minds and bodies as it continues to tweak and evolve. Before the pre-mentioned artists appear there will be an opening performance from Breadwoman, a mythical being that made her name in folklore of 80’s Los Angeles.

Wonders await by the lake this June, check out the full line up below.
